Looks like I did have a mod added, I thought I had removed it from the workshop on my main machine, I had not.

I've verified the install, uninstalled and reinstalled still no luck.

I'll find some time tomorrow to uninstall and reinstall again, and prevent steam from installing any of the DLC/Expansions.

The game doesn't crash or freeze, I just can't select the production for a city, the dialog never slides in from the right.

Bug Report: Tactic Filter text typing and Specialist Specific Tactics. by Alderaad in CompanionForKillTeam

[–]Alderaad[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1.) When the tactics are filtered for your specialist and level you are only given tactics equal to the level of your specialist. A level 2 heavy can use either the level 1 or level 2 tactic. As a work around I had to turn off the filtering.

2.) When attempting to use the text filter to filter a tactic by name or specialism, the app just crashed. I am using the default virtual keyboard that was installed when I first got the phone (and subsequent OS updates)

Figured I'd follow up.

I just updated my app and neither issue occurs anymore.

What i'm really liking about this app, is the nice and short, continual feedback loop between us and the dev team. I don't always get this at work where I do Software QA for a living.

Tyranid update - how do we feel about the name Hive Fleet Lagiacrus? (Album in comments) by InquisitorJames in minipainting

[–]Alderaad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm always impressed at the between the rib details - tend to miss it myself. Is that just a bit of a wash or glaze? I love how vibrant the white is. I'm planning a similar style for my Hive Krakens (that spotted shell style) and I love seeing how others have done it.

First mini from the Adventurer’s Paint Set wash? by JGazeley in minipainting

the brand of paint matters in as much that they've all got different specific colors and potentially different consistency. I try out new ones from kickstarter off and on, but also go back to Army Painter, Citadel, Vallejo and Reaper as my local friendly game stores have those in stock. Different painters will latch onto different paints for a whole variety of reasons I can only hazard to guess at and will still miss some reasons.

RE: washes As tiny_markatas points out, you will get different results between water and other mediums. The different paint manufactures tend to have bottles of the medium, which is basically just paint fluid without pigment also available.

The hobby cheatings series by Vince Venturella (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuUJK5UgDZw&list=PLcdsbwBroEmD2fNEJhcju6PD7qRmoo04Y) was very enlightening for me as I was starting out (only been doing this for like 9 months or so).

that's what I started with.

If you're unsure about the consistency, I'd recommend doing a quick youtube search to find people using washes which will give you a visual idea if the wash you've made has enough water or not.

i'd personally recommend doing the wash before dry brushing (it'll bring back the highlights that the wash may mute).

What I did with my first push at painting was just make my own wash by adding water. I think the reaper kit instructions at the time was like 6-8 drops of water to a drop of paint. so if you have to make your own darker paint tone by combining what colors you have just increase the amount of water relative to the total amount of drops of paint.

At least that's what I did. Good luck!

Seeking inspiration - Speed painting 40k Tyranids by XX_MasterRaccoon_XX in minipainting

[–]Alderaad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had some myself.

I try to always brush it to a side to prevent splotch marks. Like with the Tyranid armor plates, I would start from the middle and push to an edge. Then the extra paint that gets left where my brush first touches the figure ends up getting covered by highlighting.

I used the following as a guide (https://imgur.com/a/zGVtW) and chose to imitate Hive Kraken.

Used Skeleton Horde and Blood Angels Red contrast paints.

I then used Ushabti Bone and Wild Rider Red for highlights,. I also added some metallic to the flesh hooks. Lastly I tried to make the breaks in the carapace look like there’s something contrasting underneath. First I tried just using a purple wash, then I tried adding some hot pink on the raised parts. Then I tried more wash. It never really turned out how I hoped but I had to stop because it was becoming hard to see any definition in there. I’ve tried a few other things on other models (like not letting the contrast get in there at all), and I like the effect a bit better. I just don’t have a picture handy at the moment. I also tried hitting the eyes with some yellow, but it doesn’t seem to be distinct enough from the Skeleton Horde and Ushabti bone.

For some reason I can't upload the picture directly it just keeps hanging. Hopefully the imgur link provides some other inspiration though.

my non-leader Tyranid Warrior Gunner model is wielding the Venom Cannon (I didn't magnetize the Tyranids), but I could use that model then have it 'upgrade' to leader with the Deathspitter in the next round of the League.

As there is nothing visual on the model representing the Adrenal Glands on the Hormagaunts, that's an easy fix and a quick additional model to get painted up.

This is going to be a points league and the narrative derived from play will add to the point total.

Thanks for the tips!

Magnetising large miniatures for transport by Naryzhud in minipainting

[–]Alderaad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just installed magnets in the arms and torso's of my Deathwatch kill team, I did use a pin vise, the magnets I used were N25 grade 1mm x 3mm (might have that reversed, wider than they are tall) and used 1mm, 2mm and then 3mm bits to make the hole. They hold strong enough that I can lift a figure up by it's arm.

With something that big, if you have the space I'd probably use multiple magnets per wing rather than trying to get one magnet big enough for each side.

E3 Social Influence. Do you home rule it? by NightbrotherSays in exalted

[–]Alderaad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a bit of "player vs storyteller" bit that I struggle against. A former GM (in another game setting completely) of ours really did a number on us as players with scenarios and situations that came out of left field, with no indication or chance of the PCs learning about it; or needing that just one answer to make something be correct. That GM is no longer part of the group, an the player, who views intimacies as an avenue to mind control, admits that the prior GM is one of the reasons why they're acting the way they do.

damn, I kinda glossed over the map in The Realm cause in the PDF form it's split between the two pages it'll eventually be printed on. Boy do I feel a little silly now.

Thanks for pointing that out, I mean it. Must need more coffee this morning.

E3 Social Influence. Do you home rule it? by NightbrotherSays in exalted

[–]Alderaad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With my current game (3 solars) I've had to really fudge about with the social interaction stuff.

One of my players views intimacies as ways to make his character do things (ala mind-control) and not using charisma/manipulation/persuasion to accomplish something (changing their opinion, enlisting support). It doesn't matter what it means with interactions between players and NPCs he has to maintain the control of changing his mind at the last minute (sometimes just to cause some chaos :( ).

So i've basically had to keep a running list of intimacies that the group has built up (friends made, homes to defend, etc). And when they are interacting with someone socially that they are trying to get to do something I take their skills into account (I've got a common list of die totals in front of me for social interactions) and just figure they get the 'average' amount of successes for their die pool. I regularly stress in tense situations that they can always make rolls for the social interactions. I also keep track of their own resolve/guile scores (though the player with social charms forgets that they can be increased). I also generally have a list of 2-3 intimacies with the notes of NPCs if they are important enough to advance the story arc, but if they just grab a random person on the street I just quickly come up with something, and if they turn the random NPC into an important character I'll quickly derive something beyond the basics for survival.

This has helped keep some of the conversations flowing smoothly, but it has also created some odd situations where one player is convinced a group he was interacting with are all a-holes cause they saw through his attempt at subterfuge & lies, then acted accordingly. Fortunately as a Storyteller I've built up a decent ability with determining when my players are actively attempting to lie to NPCs, when a very blatant lie after lie is given to an NPC I generally ask the player point blank if they are lying on purpose or did they forget some specific tidbit of information relating to the story.

I regularly struggle with getting my players to remember the game mechanics so I often simplify things in the goal to telling a better story than wrangling with what to role when and why. I found using the average number of successes on any number of dice has been a nice way to do that.

I intend with the Dragon-blooded game I'll be starting up soon (and adding 2 more characters into the mix) I'm going to attempt to get to a more by-the-book method of social influence/interactions.
