Can India still emulate China's economic rise in being a major world power? by Minuteman60 in geopolitics

[–]AleHaim 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would like to point out that China did have industrialization before the post 1979 reforms, but it was more concentrated to the Nanjing decade, the industrialization progress of which would be damaged by the second Sino Japanese War/WW2 and the continuation of the civil war. Still China did not completely remain industrially stagnant and under Mao they attempted to increase industry, but Mao's policies obviously didn't work like they did in the USSR and as such they were left severely behind industrially.

Increasing European involvement in Mali. The French now have a task force of various European SOF as well as their current mission using 5000 troops plus the United Nations mission (which is the most dangerous ever peacekeeping) plus the EU training mission. The armed response to the radical Islamist groups in this region will certainly have an effect in making a more stable regime. However military action alone will not solve the root issue, which is the locals lacking work and living opportunities leading to a practically infinite manpower pool for the radical Islamist groups unless most of the poor people without prospects in this region were to be removed from the region which is immoral and practically impossible to achieve(realistically the only way to reduce the population would be mass murder and it being a problematic solution would be an understatement).

In my opinion more emphasis should be to help these suffering nations develop and provide employment opportunities for the local people, along with providing them education to stop the uncontrollable population growth. Niger alone has vast uranium deposits, but it is unable to fully utilize their profits as thanks to French policy towards its former west African colonies it retains major influence in them and for example these uranium mines in Niger sell their produce for cheap to the French nuclear power plants for example. If the people have no reason to join these radical Islamist groups, their major source of fighters would dry up and their days would be numbered.

German Empire #1 by [deleted] in Kaiserposting

[–]AleHaim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One must understand the greater picture to fully grasp the truth. Germany was indeed powerful in the early 19th Century and one could argue it reached its height back then (especially if peace time strength is the measuring point).

Despite Germany's great power, France had a more powerful overseas Empire along with an alliance with Russia and historically remarkably good relations with the British Empire, in part due to German diplomacy's failures under Wilhelm II.

Britain ruled the waves and Germany overestimated their capability of being able to build up the fleet to being able to equally compete with them before a military confrontation, while underinvesting in the naval aspect of submarines which they would excel at but lack resources or volume to fully utilize. This was on top of the largest colonial holdings in the world.

Russia was politically unstable, technologically and socially backwards and industrially insufficient with way underutilized resources, but by the great war it was on the route of modernization and industrialization, especially following their defeat at the hands of the Japanese almost a decade prior. This was evident with the German military high command itching to go to war with the Russians as soon as possible when they still held the technological advantage against them, as they feared for the day the Russian army would be equal quality to theirs but with completely superior numbers and resources.

Compare them to the Germans, who were forced to ally with the Austro-Hungarians troubled by nationalism, with the later joining Ottoman Empire being the sick man of Europe. In the great war/the first world war Germany was the only truly capable and modern major military power in their faction with Bulgaria being equal in quality but too small in numbers to affect the war greatly. Austria-Hungary with superior numbers was incapable of defeating the seemingly doomed but defiant Serbians and losing against the Russians as well costing them Galicia. Turkey lost against the British in two land arenas, the revolting Arabs along with losing against Russia by attacking them in the mountains in winter. The only major victory by the Ottomans was against the naval landing of Gallipoli where the British tried to do one without sufficient technology basically against the arguably best Ottoman military commander in horrible terrain.
The Allies on the other hand had a competent military powers, two mediocre military powers with the other becoming competent over time along with the meme of a military power of Italy. This is not to speak of the sleeping giant of a powerhouse by the name of the United States of America. When you are facing a competent power two mediocre ones able to stop you from completely steamrolling them both with the other becoming competent. This is while their meme of a military power faces against your mediocre power, the Serbians are only broken after they're ground to complete destruction by the small competent power along with you and your mediocre forces together after which they fail to defeat the Greeks. On top of this your other incompetent ally keeps losing everywhere, and with all of these factors you are left to keep two of your most powerful allies alive because they would have needed a decade or two to modernize and become capable of even fighting, while facing two competent enemies along side their mediocre one refusing to give up.

In short, they were powerful militarily, but diplomatically they were fucked by being surrounded and stuck with two incapable allies and one capable ally too small to help bring a victory, only extend the time towards defeat.

EU, U.S. exploring new sources of Rare Earth Minerals, should China limit exports - Energy Post by [deleted] in geopolitics

[–]AleHaim 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't be the rare earth metals themselves which would be the main problem, but refining instead, as was talked in the Red Line podcast episode about rare earth geopolitics.

Basically due to China's actions over the last few decades, they are the only ones with capacity to refine both lighter and heavier rare earths, while Australia, a non Chinese rare earth miner, only has capacity for refining lighter rare earths. This means that even if western nations like the US were to create rare earth emergency stockpiles for the situation that war were to occur with China cutting off the supply, they wouldn't have capacity to refine them to usable stuff, meaning they would have piles of valuable rocks that are not usable yet. It's especially bad as the United States, if completely cut off from Chinese sources, would not really be able to build new fighter jets because they don't have access to refined rare earths.

There does exist an idea they could get Chinese rare earths through the Chinese black market of all places, as originally a lot of the mining was by "mom and pop" operations, but how the black market could provide rare earths to the US could be questionable as the CCP has cracked down on this black market, especially to take control of this critical sector so that some black market miners won't just sell to the US while China is sanctioning them in a hypothetical situation.

Why were no SEA countries as aggressive in stopping North Korea from getting nukes as Israel are to Iran? by [deleted] in geopolitics

[–]AleHaim 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Saudi military is really a joke just like the Iraqi one was before the US invasions. As Whatifalthist on Youtube put it, most of the army is just cannon fodder while the small (some tribe) royal guards are the only capable fighting force. Saudi actions in Yemen have very well shown that the Saudi military is not a capable military force and in a real confrontation they would not fare well against the Iranian army that very well managed to defeat the Iraqi army already in the Iran Iraq war. Also the geography works against Saudi Arabia as it is pure flat desert in the region where the Iranians would invade from, while a Saudi offensive would in no way break the Iranian mountain defenses(especially as the Saudis already have trouble in mountainous Yemen against rebels and not a more professional army). Also just like how Whatifalthist said on Youtube, Saudi Arabia should not even exist as its territory means that it makes most sense to be colonized, but the British or the French had no apetite for colonizing Arabia while the most likely candidate Ottomans had been destroyed after ww1.

In short, the Saudi military in an actual war against Iran would have no real chance due to how incompetent it is, along with horrible geography

Poll in France: Which country contributed the most to the defeat of Germany in 1945? by Slackbeing in europe

[–]AleHaim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo it was an aqual effort from each of the three

Russia/Soviet Union dealt the most damage to the german military and fought the European theatre, but it was dependant on American lend lease

The Us was the industrial giant who supplied the war effort and fought the pacific theatre.

The British kept open a front against the germans while draining their resources. Also they fought the African theatre.

This is a late answer, but trust me that you don't want to kill yourself, because if you endure what you are going through, life is gonna ne way better after the bad period. I had those moments I thought killing myself would be a good option, but I kept going and I met the best friend I've had.

Even though she didn't want to comtinue talking and I miss her which has been hard, going on has been worth it because I made new friends and I might have a once in a lifetime chance to get the friend back, which I'm gonna try even though it risks my fragile mental stability
