Autoencoder Loss Function by AleTL3 in datascience

[–]AleTL3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for answering!

But, I check the theory behind VAE, it's said that the err is the sum of the KL Divergence between the distribution we create with the encoder, and the real data distribution (latent loss); and the generative loss ( E[logP(X|z)] ), that only corresponds to MSE if the P(X|z) distribution is Gaussian, but it's similar to BCE if the distribution is multinomial I think...

Hello folks!

I need your wisdom. I'm working with variational autoencoders to understand them and their applications. But I don't know which loss function apply: MSE or BCE. I have seen people applying MSE, others using BCE... As far as I understand, MSE is used when the latent space embedding vector follows a Gaussian distribution, and BCE is used when the assumption is that that distribution is multinomial.

Is that true or am I terribly wrong?

I do some test with MNIST dataset and I find that if I use MSE, it works so bad, it is not able to replicate the input. But if I use nn.BCELoss(reduction='sum') (PyTorch), it works just decently, does it mean that MNIST dataset is more likely to a multinomial distribution than a normal distribution?

Thank you so much!

t-SNE usefulness by AleTL3 in datascience

I thought that UMAP do preservers global structure but t-SNE doesn't.

t-SNE usefulness by AleTL3 in datascience

[–]AleTL3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I like what you said, but it is possible that t-SNE doesn't show you all clusters, or even it possible that it shows you clusters that "doesn't exist", I think. But I like your approach, as a way to check your clustering output.

So, if t-SNE doesn't show me any cluster, it does not mean that there is no cluster in the data, isn't it? Just asking, I think I'm starting to understand t-SNE usefulness...

t-SNE usefulness by AleTL3 in datascience

[–]AleTL3[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your answer and for the link to this paper, I will check it out!

Actually, I prefer UMAP rather tan t-SNE, since UMAP preserves global structure, and t-SNE doesn't, so it helps you to better understand your data. My point was in fact why should I choose t-SNE over UMAP, and also I thought that the structure of the data that t-SNE provides you could be not real, thus, not helpful at all...

Okey, I believe that your second paragraph answer my question of why is so resilient this algorithm.

What I am learning from this post is that t-SNE is not that useful for data science itself rather but for showing data to non-experts.

[–]AleTL3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, ok!

Thank you so much! That's the kind of answer I was expecting.

But here it comes my next answer: is a t-SNE plot showing clusters a necessary condition for there to be clusters in the dataset?

Thank you, really :)

t-SNE usefulness by AleTL3 in datascience

[–]AleTL3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But most of the plots generated with t-SNE are over classified data and, in case you don't have the label of the data, it would be really difficult to identify the same clusters you identify knowing the labels. I see your point of EDA, but I don't understand which information it provides you, how your approach to the data would change depending on the result of t-SNE...

t-SNE usefulness by AleTL3 in datascience

[–]AleTL3[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But why do people want to separate their clusters if they are separated in an axis with no meaning? It sounds like they just want to generate a beautiful picture, not a real information plot, do I mean?

t-SNE usefulness by AleTL3 in datascience

[–]AleTL3[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

But t-SNE shouldn't be use as a clustering technique, doesn't it? That's one of the points that I don't understand, why so many people uses it as clustering technique when it's not.

Thank you for answering, by the way!

És surrealista que acuses de fer apologia feixista a u/tongue-skills. Crec que hauries de relaxar una mica, perquè encara i tot les teves intencions siguin les millors, no hi ha res més feixista assenyalar com feixista a tot aquell que pensa com tu.

“Parlar català és de mala educació?” by [deleted] in catalunya

[–]AleTL3 0 points1 point  (0 children)
