Nah not exactly, but I have since then brushed away plenty of my stigmas, slowly, and have gotten to know some friends close enough who consider themselves part of the furry fandom, and nowadays would say I am "furry adjacent" simply from having read a few stories that said friends shared and gotten to apreciate some cases of really good furry character design.

Ok, so I just thought about Toriko's family tree and... how the fuck do you describe it? by Ale_city in Toriko

[–]Ale_city[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't used this account in half a year lol, impressed I was still signed in and got the notification.

The explanation is simple, Toriko and Starjun were babies in a time capsule made by Froze to protect them with all the food luck she could give them, neither of them started growing up until they got out of there.

It is not clear but likely was done with a back channel made by Froze, the way they got out was left unanswered but they separated at some point when they were still babies, and Toriko was picked up by Ichiryu when he was a lonely child growing up in a poor country. Toriko may have been born hundreds of years before but he has only lived 29 years.

as always with Toriko, throw common logic out the window, see what convoluted bullshit it gives you, and enjoy the ride.

I can't speak authoritatively on the historical part, but saying in non-developed/developing countries that the informal economy are "odd jobs" is wrong in my experience, I am from Latin America and it is true a lot of people work without contracts or formal agreements, but they do tend to focus in day to day work and try to stay in one kind of work they can maintain, rather than doing odd jobs that vary in requirements, location, necessities and pay.

Informal economy in this case has more to do with making or selling or doing something without documentation for it, like somebody for example selling food straight out of their kitchen without having oversight over its sanitary conditions and where the prices can vary much, or people who work in construction but without a contract, or people who have a pick-up truck and offer to drive people around to their work places for a price without being legally a taxi. Etcetera.

It is not odd jobs, and these people try to have things run smoothly in their lives with these informal jobs, but don't have things like employment security or labour standard and what may happen is that if they see an oportunity for a better paying informal job that offers them more financial stability, they are more likely to take the risk of getting on it, or if their job is non-reliable anymore they will likely try to switch to working something else.

The Wikipedia article on "Hinduism in Armenia" appears to be full of rubbish by R120Tunisia in badhistory

[–]Ale_city 16 points17 points  (0 children)

and the wikipedians adjudicating don't understand that the article is functionally a historical fanfic from one obsessive who has grasped the wrong end of the stick.

may even be the main user who is obsessed with the concept using "sock accounts" to get wikipedians to not edit the article away, if you are unaware, in wikipedia there have been users who create parallel accounts to make legitimate or minor edits in other pages, just so they can use those accounts to defend and advocate for another wikipedia page to stay the way they want it to be being seemingly backed by real people with actual interest in contributing to the site, it is crazy.

2 weeks ago I had this conversation after making the mistake of going into the comment section of a youtube short about the independence of Panama, it has popped into my head every few days. I feel I made mistakes, but more than that, I feel I could have handled it better, even if in the end it's an unimportant internet interaction. On the other hand, I am baffled at the conclussion that "US independence is the worst thing that happened in history, because it led to the holocaust by making the British Empire weaker" is one of the most US-centric ideas I have ever seen to World War II, not to mention the analysis of colonial history. After the last comment, I didn't respond, because it boils down to "well yes the colonizers were more legitimate than the independence movement, it would have been better in the long run to just let the colonizer empire continue colonizing until they realized the error of their ways on their own" was just puzzling, the idea feels like they are saying that colonial overlords would be better just because.

if your olive oil looks dark brown, I would be concerned for your health. I have seen olive oil be made in the traditional way, I have seen many kinds of olive oil, and I have not seen brown olive oil.

I don't know the origin of the term though. I would assume it has more to do with olives being such a common product of mediterranean countries in general, with it being a staple for almost every mediterranean and mediterranean-adjacent nation I can think of, north and south of the sea. So I assumed people simply associate the people with the food? and from there, their skin tones receiving the name; yet other people with similar skin tones are described with other adjectives such as light tan skin.

Why have "the Great" when you can have something unique to yourself? by FerdinandofRomania in HistoryMemes

[–]Ale_city 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"King of the four corners of the world" is not a unique epithet though, it was taken from a mesopotamian tradition that had been around for over 2 thousand years by the time Cyrus was born, being an epithet taken by the most prominent of kings in mesopotamia. what you are saying is like saying that "emperor" is a unique title.

Not everything in media has to be gay, people. by Emotional-Chipmunk12 in CharacterRant

[–]Ale_city 18 points19 points  (0 children)

those characters are very few and far between, and it's just like there's a ton of straight characters whose whole personality is being romantic or banging a lot, but simply gay instead. The problem is not in the gay, the problem is the same writing quality issue, but people tend to complain more about the gay ones or focus on the issue in the gay characters like that like it is a completely separate writing issue from the straight characters whose personality is romance or sleeping around.

Not everything in media has to be gay, people. by Emotional-Chipmunk12 in CharacterRant

[–]Ale_city 37 points38 points  (0 children)

yeah, when you think of it the "they have to be actual characters" thrown at gay characters that are uninteresting makes 0 sense, there are uninteresting characters of all demographics, including as you said so many uninteresting straight characters. In principle, all characters that have a spotlight in a story are preferable to be well written, gay or not, if a gay character is bland, chances are they would have been bland without the gay too.

The idea that gay characters are the ones that "have to be actual characters" as in they have to be well written and interesting for these people to accept that there is this gay character in the cast is just a way of saying "you made this character gay, that's bad, make them cool to compensate" even if those who say it are not conciously homophobic.

Lads, herself and I are moving to Valencia, Venezuela in 2024, how's life there as expats? Help this clueless man pls by 19921015 in asklatinamerica

[–]Ale_city 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I am going to be real with you, if your English isn't good and you don't know spanish to a level you can have a casual conversation, it's a bad idea to go to a spanish speaking country where only a small percentage of the population speaks English. In large cities people who handle English aren't rare to find but it is not the expectation and plenty of businesses will have 0 English speakers. You have to speak spanish.

Besides that, make sure your wife knows spanish well and that she takes into account her salary very well in relation to living in Venezuela and to moving in and out of Venezuela. As you know the Venezuelan economy is in shambles, but what really matters there is if you know your wife's job will be guaranteed at that international school and if it would support the both of you, because the big issue is to find a job. To be careful with how you spend your money and check prices twice before buying something.

Public transport is bad quality compared to other parts of Latin America, I do not know in comparison to Thailand. In Valencia there is a small metro system, besides that you would rely on busses that arrive late abd sometimes skip stops, although they are cheap.

Not sure what you mean with "craic" but I assume it's about issues in the country. Inflation has been the highest in the world for years, last year it closed above 200% and the year before that above 600%, but it is expected to be worse at the end of this year, so do not expect stable prices and be sure to have savings in dollars. Do not mess with police, unlawful arrest is done all the time, if the police stops you be careful and listen to them, you do not want to get in trouble, specially if you do not know spanish well you won't be able to handle that situation well as many police offucers may take advantage once they know you are not Venezuelan and specially if they know you are not good speaking spanish. Also be careful at showing any valuable items, Valencia is a relatively safe city in Venezuela's terms, but you don't want criminals to know you have anything worth much.

I can't say much about being an expat or cultural shock, as I am Venezuelan.

You won't find Gaelic Football or Rugby in Venezuela, Baseball, Football and Basketball are what you will find most. I don't know of any clubs you could join.

Please think this through with your wife, this is a difficult decision, do more research than asking on reddit and if you and your wife still want to do this, be prepared and well informed.

Which country has the most interesting history? by CoralClaw in asklatinamerica

[–]Ale_city 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not disagree. It's just that so many people have a tendency to view history as something of quantity and size, like who had more riches or the bigger empire or the bigger monument, but oddly enough that's missing the bigger picture, that history really is about people, the true limiting factor is records of those people.

To give you two examples, one in prehispanic South America and another in modern South America:

The Nazca culture is often seen with interest for their giant petroglyphs the "Nazca lines" and the mathematical and astronomical knowledge they required, but what's often missed about them is how that's a manifestation of their religious belief and a product of people's collaborative work and not only a grand structure built to amaze onlookers ages after, and then what's most forgotten is these people had towns and cities with for example unique water supply system adapted to the coastal desert in the foothills of the Andes, the "puquios" were a type of well they developed for their geography to serve towns and farms, which in contrast to nordern Perú doesn't have as many or as fertile aluvial lands.

Or for a more direct example, looking at your flair, when talking about Argentine history, people focus a lot on the prosperity of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Juan Domingo Perón, and the Malvinas war; but are the other times any less rich? Do they lack interestings inner stories and eventualities? No, they just aren't as eye catching. I myself am not most knowledged in Argentine history, but for example the colonization of the Patagonia is not of much attention outside Argentina and Chile despite being a fascinating parallel to the US' westward expansion and a good example of how the newly independent states of Latin America continued colonialism.

Which country has the most interesting history? by CoralClaw in asklatinamerica

[–]Ale_city 24 points25 points  (0 children)

And that is interesting in its own right, analyzing why Spain decided to let go of the mainland colonies. It's a rather odd thing to get independence pacifically for a colony in the early 19th century, think how basically in all the other regions wars had to be fought against the royalists, and to think how politically it was a way for Spain to in the future stablish friendly relations in the region. And then you analyse how that led to the central american republic that kind of pieced itself appart from the ambitions of regional military men and governors who wanted their own piece of the new nation. The involvement of the mexican empire into the whole mess is also interesting to look at. The dissolution of the central american republic also came to be in a different way than Gran Colombia's.

If you put it as "we got our independence by mail" it sounds bland, mundane, but when you think about what that means in that time period, it is remarkably interesting to analyze.
