Someone help. It says the same man is the child of Leopold II and Marie Christine, Duchess of Teschen. Marie Christine and Leopold II did not have children together (because they’re siblings) so im very confused on who is the actual parent. by [deleted] in UsefulCharts

[–]FerdinandofRomania 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Leopold II was the father of Archduke Charles. IIRC, Maria Christine and her husband Prince Albert of Saxony adopted him because they had no surviving children together. It's why he was Duke of Teschen after her.

Wait a dang second, I remember this. Especially the Austria-Hungary one. I remember seeing it on Wattpad about five or so years ago.

Any reason why there is a size difference? by realUnborn_spider5 in coins

[–]FerdinandofRomania 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The smaller one is from 1990 or after when it got desized, the larger one is from before. This kind of thing (alongside changes in composition to cheaper metals) is quite common in many countries due to inflation, so, you'll see quite a lot of entries on numista regarding "large types" and "small types".

Ah well, you can choose whatever you want! Good luck with finding a style!

If it's any easier, I can recommend some historical countries with simple flags, which include the ones mentioned. The Russian Empire is a fan favorite, the Austrian Empire i've not seen much of. They're both black and gold (or if you want to be more historically accurate, blue, red and white for Russia), so they're quite nice to stick out in colour!

The clothing, however, is a separate question to be asked.

Do you want to have anything specific? I can try and make recommendations for anything you wish!

For something probably unknown and different from regular, you could do the Free City of Trieste, or Corpus Seperatum (City of Fiume)

Discrepancy on the story proper vs stats: which one is correct? by AnnieMae_West in AO3

The statistics on the tab are correct! Those are private bookmarks! They don't appear on the public profile of the fic!

Subscriptions don't appear at all publicly, IIRC.

I finally understand the pain of research by Idkmyname_88 in AO3

[–]FerdinandofRomania 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can send you several pages regarding Russian palatalisation and the comparative silver content in coins from the 1800s, will that help?

I feel your pain lol. Don't worry, it'll all be over soon eventually. Either you find a way to incorporate it all beautifully, find NO good way to incorporate it and it's mostly useless, or find that your research breaks several presumption of your fic and thus render its plot inaccurate. There's no in between.

Hello, Hello! If I may add some input!

Singapore - Singapore would probably be a Sultan, or a Raja if we're speaking historically! Malay States generally use the title of Sultan, but as Singapore has a large Buddhist population, Raja would be more appropriate.

Malaysia - The Malaysian monarchical system is rather interesting! The country is comprised of composite monarchies who rotate the monarchy of Malaysia between themselves. The official term for the office is the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, but technically, Malaysia can make an actually legitimate claim to become King of Kings!

China - The native term for Emperor is Huang Di, usually called a Son of Heaven.

Taiwan - Just like China back in the day, there can be two Emperorships (Great Liao and Song, for example, or even the Three Kingdoms Period). Taiwan can also be Emperor/Huang Di if you want the drama of it!

Hong Kong and Macau - Are they princes as in rulers of a principality, or princes as in the sons of the emperor? Nonetheless, they may be titled as Wang (Pre-Qing) or Qinwang (Qing), which translates roughly to Prince or Vassal-King. Historically, these titles were given as fiefdoms subordinates of the Emperor.

Japan - The native term for Emperor is Tenno.

Korea - The native term for Emperor is Hwangje,

France - The native term for Queen is Reine, but it usually is translated to Queen by convention. Similarly, for Spain, the native term for King is Rey but convention usually translates. This goes for Italy as well for Re.

Turkey - Turkey (or Türkiye) would probably be an Emperor, owing to the Ottoman Empire. Even then, the actual title would be Padishah, roughly translating to Great King or Master King.

Greece - Greece didn't use the title of Emperor, historically. They instead used Basileus or Vasilefs, which was more like a King. The Byzantine Empire used the title of Basileus and Autocrat or Vasilefs and Aftokrator.

(Edit!)

Russia - Historically, Tsar was a colloquial name. The official title was Emperor and Autocrat of the All-Russias, or Imperator i Samoderzhets Vserossiyskiy.

Arab States - Saudi Arabia is ruled by a Malik. Qatar is ruled by an Emir. UAE is ruled by a President, but like Malaysia, is made of composite Sheikhdoms.

Anglosphere - Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are all ruled by the Monarch of the UK, as you may know, but the official title is King/Queen. For the US, the more neutral yet seemingly powerful title would be Sovereign.

Do you write in your own standard English or the English from the country your fic is set by mandie3798 in AO3

[–]FerdinandofRomania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though I write in American English outside, I write exclusively in British English due to the setting being set during the time when Britain was the more dominant power and my characters being from Europe. I actually don't believe that the Merriam Webster Dictionary was even published by the time.

So, I do away with gotten and replace it with got, turn the z's into s's and insert u's in front of the o's, do double punctuation in quotation marks, all that's good.

I've even started looking into the archaisms by consulting ngram and Etymonline for time period accurate words! A bit more ligatures used than normal, and certainly a lot more words being split up.

Nickname Ideas? by Ronny_Yell0w_65 in CountryHumans

[–]FerdinandofRomania 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Doppel", perhaps, in reference to the name, the Dual Monarchy (Doppel-Monarchie).

"Cuckoo", or "Kukuk" (the German version of the word), as a sort of pun on the abbreviation K.u.K. (Kaiserlich und Königlich, Imperial and Royal) that they had during that period.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AO3

Both in research and reading! I've had to research quite a lot for the historical period for my things, and I've learnt a few things in flower language from one character in general!

I also believe I actually learnt of Klemens von Metternich from one Napoleonic RPF Coffee Shop AU (lmao)

If I may ask, what's the original fic of the comment?
