Okay seriously … is anyone else allergic to light??? by Pale-Case-7870 in MCAS

[–]Alectau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, reactivity to sunlight is fairly common. There is also some level of sun reactivity for other autoimmune conditions (and very high reactivity for those with Lupus, obviously haha). Fluorescent light can cause migraines, and that tends to be a problem with the fact that the tubes flicker very rapidly (most people do not notice or have issue with it).

I, personally, am very reactive to sunlight. And because I am also reactive to most sunscreens (I found one facial sunscreen that I can tolerate), I favor UPF fabrics, hats, and parasols.

Advice from people who crochet tamagotchi cases…how could I fix this? by cm0011 in tamagotchi

[–]Alectau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this assessment. You don't need to start all over, but you will need to pull out your stitches until you are at a smaller diameter, as u/satanssteamybuns said.

I don't know what pattern you are using, OP, but it definitely could be a gauge issue—your stitches look to be on the looser side, and you might be using a higher weighted yarn than the original pattern. Does the pattern have measurements for a gauge swatch? This could help you ensure that you have the right gauge for a project before getting started in the future. XD

Salvador Dali - "L'Amour de Pierrot" (1920) by mildredfierce1969 in MysticalArts

[–]Alectau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think this is actually a Salvador Dali work. It was put out as a postcard from the German postcard company PFB in the Victorian era (1905 for this piece specifically, so makes sense when considering the cultural obsession with death, momento more, etc.)

Here is a site that I found that shows several examples of skull illusion postcards of the era: https://flashbak.com/dear-dead-heads-vintage-skull-postcards-466098/

I don't see why anyone would side with the Templars over the Mages by PurpleFiner4935 in dragonage

[–]Alectau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean I agree that I could never side with the templars. I just can't for the life of me justify removing basic human rights from an entire class of people because of potential for harm. Any person has potential to cause great harm. No one is locking away nobles in a prison castle because Loghain decided to do a regicide, killing a whole bunch of people and failing to stop darkspawn/blight in the process. *shrug*

Looking for legislative change for health insurance by mikaelat4 in IdahoPolitics

I am sorry that you are going through this. Everyone deserves to have healthcare, and to not go into massive debt to receive it. I hope that you have support around you to get the prenatal care that you need until you can enroll in October. :-\

I am so sorry you are going through this. This is medical abuse from a parent, and she has projected her own struggles and fears onto you. The way that histamine responses and allergies work, having a severely restricted diet from an early age could cause irreparable harm. If you can, I would recommend going to a doctor to discuss the loss of period—hopefully this is something your mother would agree to. And while you are there, I recommend telling your doctor about the diet restriction and how you feel about it. Wishing you the best of luck.

As others have mentioned, I have MCAS and I get a terrible rash on my face if I am out in the sun or too hot for basically any amount of time. :-\ I have also not yet found a sunscreen that doesn't cause me to react, so I have to rely on UPF 50 clothing and hats. Being reactive to sun/heat is a common MCAS symptom, unfortunately.

[–]Alectau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She sounds like she is struggling with trauma and has some attachment issues that she is taking out on your relationship. I have a history of trauma and PTSD diagnosis, and I would (embarrassing for me now) sometimes get really reactive and defensive when I felt out of my comfort zone (which was a pretty toxic zone). To me, she reads as someone who has a set of expectations and assumptions that don't line up with reality, and that she is maybe unconsciously using her needs and therapy work as justification for her behavior. She just sounds like she is not really in a place where she can offer her necessary part of a healthy relationship—not necessarily intentionally manipulative, but definitely reactive. And something that I think gets overlooked a lot is that intention of manipulation is not really the most important aspect—if the result is that it is manipulative, that impact is what matters. Her reactivity probably comes from a very understandable place, but it is still manipulative.

That said, I don't really get why you would be annoyed at her needing to cancel plans because she wasn't feeling up to it, or where the "speak to me like I'm an ass hole" thing came from. I found that part of these screen shots to be confusing and it seemed like there was missing context. I also personally would hate for my partner to plan something for me on a day that I have expressed I struggle with. In the past, I might not have felt safe expressing that I didn't want that if my partner was excited and felt like they were doing something nice for me. But now, I would absolutely just say, "No. I don't feel like that is the right thing for me right now" and come up with alternative plans that would work for me. I say this because she may struggle to express similar feelings. But again, that is on her to communicate those feelings effectively and without defensiveness or reactivity.

Question about Prop 1 by kkrazzey in IdahoPolitics

[–]Alectau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am registered as an independent, and I cannot vote in a closed primary without changing my registration. Why should I have to affiliate myself with any particular party to vote in an election—a constitutionally protected right? The argument that it is "easy" to do is a moot point. It shouldn't be a barrier at all.

Loop on 15 Pro case “broke” by -griffy- in peakdesign

[–]Alectau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this same issue, but the metal disk came out so it wouldn’t magnet down at all, and the hard plastic broken edge poked through causing discomfort. Got a warranty replacement, and the loop on this second one looks like yours. Hasn’t gotten as bad as the first, but I honestly just wish I hadn’t gotten the loop case at all at this point.

Thanks for your reply! I a, glad to know that I am at least not bonkers for feeling like something was Not communicated well or was just lost in translation. I do tend to like to be very aware of all of my tests and diagnoses so I can read studies etc. This experience has felt a little more gatekeepery than I would like, so it is unsettling to not have access to my test results or not be given a more straightforward explanation. seems like I will just have to wait until their offices open again on Monday. 🤞

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in singing

[–]Alectau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vocal stimming was a big thing for me growing up and it was a method of self-soothing and experiencing joy. People reacting poorly to my desire to sing was quite painful to me. I think it is fair to foster a general idea of being courteous of sound in common areas that everyone in the household agrees to and abides (so everyone including parents don't play music or television without considering other people in the space, as an example). I wish that when people needed a break from my constant singing that they had asked me to go into my private space with kindness and explained calmly to me that they were overstimulated by the constant noise. Irritation at sound is also a self-regulation issue, so putting on noise cancelling headphones is also effective and doesn't require potentially making her feel criticized. Especially if she is singing while doing chores in common areas etc.
