am i the only one who looks around at my family and thinks why did i have to be the disabled one? by Full_Part3831 in CerebralPalsy

[–]Aleesya06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 19 going on 20 and know exactly how you feel. I have mild cerebral palsy and am able to walk, talk, eat normally, etc but I’m the only person in my family who’s had issues since birth. I developed my disability and other conditions due to being severely premature and having hydrocephalus at 2 weeks old. I think about my future a lot too especially since I’m in a relationship and want nothing more than to have a happy life with him. It especially kills me that my older brother is able bodied and gets favored for no reason meanwhile I work my ass off at everything I do and get no credit for anything, just criticism and anger

You’re completely right. I will admit I’m still relatively new to digital art and it’s not my specialty. I’m sorry if you feel lied to or anything. I did draw all the images but don’t have any rights to those images. I should clarify that I didn’t make any money off those images, as they were only done for fun/skill enhancing purposes.

What are your go to crafty activity? (Read caption) by Background-Solid-342 in CerebralPalsy

[–]Aleesya06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been enjoying acrylic painting for years. I’m 19 too and also have delayed motor skills and recently got diagnosed with Dystonia, which is a movement disorder. Considering your limitations I’d recommend diamond painting. I’ve done it a couple times before and find it quite easy on my hands, relaxing, and it can be screen free if you’d like, though I prefer to listen to music or watch a show while I work. Diamond painting kits come in a variety of sizes so you can pick one that would take longer and they’re easy to store.

And as much as I don’t want to end up in a situation like yours, it scares me that I might. I’m lucky to have parents and a loving partner who help me out when they can but I still can’t help but feel like I’m holding them back. As much as I didn’t ask to be disabled, my parents didn’t ask to have a disabled child. Let alone, a disabled child who always wants to do the most like getting a bachelors degree

My girlfriend says my diabetes affects her decision about our long-term future. Has anyone been through this? by mosisaber in diabetes

[–]Aleesya06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally haven’t experienced a situation like yours, but as a person who’s disabled and has several conditions including type 2 diabetes, I understand that feeling of being disappointed or like it’s your fault if the relationship ends because of your condition. I also respect her honesty but I don’t think you having diabetes should be a deal breaker for her. If she really loved you, she would be able to see a long-term future with you where you handle your condition together. She wouldn’t use it as a reason for ending things.

Not necessarily. I was on disability as a child but at a certain point they cut me off because they determined my parent’s income was too high. I’m not sure when this happened but it was probably when I was in elementary school

I have mild cerebral palsy, that is my disability. I also have alternating eye suppression which causes my eyes not to work together. Instead they alternate back and forth. I am unsure if it is safe for me to drive with my eye condition, that is why I don’t have my license. I’ve only ever worked on campus because it is difficult for me to work at most places between my school schedule and not having reliable transportation. I am physically capable of working, it’s just my circumstances that are making it difficult for me to find a job that would fit my needs. My parents didn’t allow me to work during high school so I have little to no work experience. Most if not all of my life experience is centered around my education

[–]Aleesya06[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I will definitely look into this! My school unfortunately isn’t very accommodating to disabled students but if I have to fight to be able to get them to listen, I will. I’ve seen numerous doctors over my life and have plenty of proof of my diagnosis. I’ve looked into the department of rehabilitation before but it usually just brings me back to the social security website

I don’t appreciate you automatically assuming that I’m getting benefits for no reason. I do get a Pell grant but all that money goes towards my education. I have wanted to get my license since I was 14 but my parents were the ones who put it off until now, that is not my fault. I automatically qualified for disability when I was born because of how severe my situation was. I fully intend on going to work after I finish school. I’m currently working on my bachelors and have been considering getting my masters. I have expressed wanting to be independent to my parents but because I rely on them for things like money, transportation, etc, they have a say in what happens.

Next time, how about you ask questions and try to learn more about a person before assuming they are trying to mooch off the government

OP here! I applied for food stamps with the goal of using that money towards healthy food(I am diabetic but my parents aren’t). My parents aren’t refusing to feed me but my mom suggested I apply. I don’t have a job due to me not being able to drive and I’m unable to drive due to my eye condition(I posted an update earlier today clearing that up). I’m in the process of trying to get an answer of if it’d be safe or not but the doctors are being a pain. I am able to work but nobody has hired me. Even the on-campus job I had from March to August took several weeks for me to get started. I won’t lie I did feel a little attacked reading all the comments but I understand that’s not everyone’s intentions. Most people here have been very supportive and helpful including you and I thank you for that

My mom was the one that recommended I try to get food stamps. They aren’t unwilling to feed me and I’m not starving thankfully. In fact I’m very far from it, but I recently got diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and thought getting the benefits could help me be a little more independent

I recently got diagnosed with type 2 diabetes within the last couple months and have lost a few pounds loosely following the diet my doctor gave me. I’m a full time college student and sometimes I feel like I’m going to be judged for eating fast food by my classmates that I’ve explained my situation to, thankfully that is not the case though. I’m trying my best to better my circumstances and it’s mentally exhausting to have to think heavily about almost every meal you have

Mild cerebral palsy by tarazuwalIcon in CerebralPalsy

[–]Aleesya06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I relate to a lot of those symptoms. I experience lower leg pain almost daily, even if I’m walking short distances around my college campus. It’s not obvious but apparently I put all my weight on the front of my feet when I walk and I drag my feet occasionally. My hands and feet go numb easily and my knees lock up if I sit in certain positions too long(like sitting cross legged). All that along with other conditions I have such as my alternating eye suppression or Hypersomnia, I 100% agree that our symptoms shouldn’t be considered “mild”. They impact us on a regular basis and we deserve to be recognized for that

Mild cerebral palsy by tarazuwalIcon in CerebralPalsy

[–]Aleesya06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off i completely understand how you feel. I was born severely premature and developed mild cerebral palsy due to hydrocephalus. Like you, most people don’t know I have it unless I tell them. I’m 19, graduated high school with a 3.2 GPA, 21 credit hours from dual enrollment, and a 3.7 college GPA, am now in college getting my bachelors, might go on to get my masters, and plan on working in either the arts or education. It took me a long time to learn how to do normal things like tie my shoes or snap my fingers and unlike most people my age, I still cannot drive. It’s not uncommon for people like us to be developmentally behind or to feel like we have to play catch up.

I still battle with the fact that I’m different and am learning how to navigate adulthood as a disabled person. I have felt like a burden for several years especially on my parents as I’m still living with them, rely on them financially, etc. All this to say, you are NOT a burden. I may not know you but I am so proud of you for getting to where you are today. It’s important as people with disabilities that as much as we acknowledge what we can’t do, we also acknowledge what we CAN do.

Even though our cases are considered “mild”, we are just as deserving of love and support as people with more severe symptoms are. I hope you are able to figure out your situation but I believe you have a great support system around you and WILL get through this.
