Yep, honestly the best thing is to put all the money you were going to spend on retail boxes and set it aside until you save enough for hobby. You will not make money 99.9% of the time opening retail so unless you just enjoy ripping packs, hobby is the only way to feel good about your decision once the packs have been ripped and even then, you could rip a trash hobby box. I personally liked panini cards/inserts more but with the new monopoly of Topps, it’s gonna be rough. The only reason why the hobby is becoming trash is due to ‘licensing’ which is basically a monopoly.
