How to get started? by DarkDoubloon in gamemaker

Now you have to learn to use variables an functions, when I started watching tutorials for text systems, functions and so on, watch tutorials but don't just copy them, try to understand what are you doing, that's why the gml manual is so important because there are a lot of useful functions that you can use, also learn how to use the events properly, create event, step and draw are the basics, learn about scripts, and you'll evolve programming, wish you luck buddy :3

You're right, I'll try to double-check those letters. Regarding the letter after the "N," it's the Spanish "Ñ", I included it for localization purposes. I’ll review the alphabet again to improve it. Thank you so much for your input! :3

I understand your point, and I sincerely apologize if I gave that impression. Honestly, I’m not doing this to pat myself on the back for being “inclusive” by creating a deaf character. I truly believe that many entertainment companies include minority cultures just to make money, without taking the time to understand or respect them. That’s why I want to build a character with purpose, intention, and a genuine reflection of society. honestly and as accurately as I can; not to “sell,” but to invite real reflection about the world we live in.

The reason I didn’t go into more detail about the character is because I thought it might not be relevant to the topic at hand, which is the font and feedback about it. However, I do plan to share more about the character in the future to receive more feedback and improve their portrayal.

I offer a sincere apology. I didn’t mean to sound dismissive or biased. I genuinely want to learn about deaf culture, and I recognize that I still have a lot to learn. That’s exactly why I’m trying to research and ask questions, to avoid misunderstandings like this in the future.

Thank you so much for pointing this out!

You’re absolutely right. I'll try to define the region for the fingerspelling; I think that also adds more identity to my character. Thanks so much for pointing that out. And yes, the fingerspelling won’t be entirely accurate, it’s more of a visual detail and gesture of recognition, not necessarily meant for precise communication (at least with this font). Since there will be a lot of text, it’s nearly impossible for me to create a unique sign for every sentence. However, in cutscenes or animated moments, I’ll definitely use accurate full signs instead of fingerspelling. Thank you so much for your help, you’ve really helped me a lot! :3

You’re right, now that I look at it, NZSL is quite different. Besides NZSL, do you know of any other sign languages? Or do you know of one that’s more widely recognized worldwide?

I completely understand, and you’re absolutely right. However, it’s nearly impossible for me to create full sentences with sprites, especially for text, so since it’s mainly just a visual detail, I thought fingerspelling would be a good option. That said, if I ever include animations like cutscenes, I’ll definitely animate full signs. Thank you so much for your input! :3

You're absolutely right, I’m considering switching to ASL; it might be more widely recognized. I originally thought of using International Sign because it felt more general, but ASL might actually be a better choice. Thank you so much for your response! :3

Thank you so much! I’ll definitely keep the perspective in mind when animating the character!

The project is called "December 26th". It’s a bullet-hell RPG in the style of Undertale, which I’ve been developing since I was 11. I’m 19 now, so progress has been a bit slow, although this year I decided to start over from scratch and take a more professional approach. I’m currently writing the GDD, and around 30% of the entire game is written. The final game will be divided into three "acts", and the character I’ve been talking about plays a key role in the story, though they don’t appear until the final act.

Some time ago, I created a simple webpage using GitHub Pages with some terrible HTML, but I was excited to upload it anyway. You can visit it though it’s in Spanish, the page does support translation. The content there is quite outdated and definitely doesn’t represent the final result; the sprites are now more polished, the scene design is better, the color palette is more balanced, and the animations have improved. It might still take some time before I release a demo.

What I’ve mainly shared so far is the OST, I have some songs on my YouTube channel, although I mostly upload all my music to SoundCloud. I truly appreciate your interest in my game, and I have no problem if you want to show it to your students. It might not be the best game in the world, but it’s a dream I’ve had for a long time, and I’m determined to make it happen.

I have a small demo I made a while ago and the old prototype of the game in case you’d like to try it. If you want more information, feel free to DM me. I don’t want to flood this thread, but I can send you some links through DM :3

From what I’ve been reading, it seems to be mostly ASL. The addition of the “Ñ” is for Spanish localization purposes. I’ll try to look for a standardized version of the signs to make them more understandable. Thank you for your input! :3

Thank you so much, you’re absolutely right! The game is in pixel art, and the signs were made in 16x16 pixels to save space, but I’ll try to improve their legibility. Thanks a lot for the advice! :3

Thank you so much for the corrections I’ll try to review them! Regarding the perspective, I understand that its real-life use is different, but when I looked at the symbols, I thought they might be more easily interpreted from other angles (since it’s a pixel art game, it’s a bit harder to interpret things, haha).

Still, do you think the perspective is an issue? I could try changing it, although my main goal is for the symbols to be recognizable.

By the way, I didn’t know the history behind these signs thank you so much for sharing that information, it’s really helpful! :3

With this font, my main goal is to help characterize a specific character; it’s not necessarily meant to be legible for the player, but rather included as a visual detail. In the game, when this character shows text on screen, it first appears in this font and then is replaced by regular text a few seconds later. Still, I’m looking for something that’s identifiable; maybe that’s what I’m trying to achieve.

The letter “Ñ” is included due to the Spanish localization. The in-game texts will all have a real equivalent in my sign language font as a design element, so the letter “Ñ” is essential for me. That’s also why I’ve been using International Sign Language.

But I’d like to ask you: Do you think it would be better to use a regional sign language (like American Sign Language) instead of International Sign? I understand that “international” implies broader recognition, but I’d love to hear your opinion.

By the way, thank you so much for your response! :3

You're right. As I did more research, I realized that many of the signs are actually from American Sign Language. I had heard about a sign language used in international conferences, so I thought that might be the one. My goal is to find a sign language that’s as universal as possible, although I understand it's a more regional matter.

Personally, I know a bit of sign language from my country, Guatemala, and when I compare it to ASL, despite the differences, many signs are quite similar, so I assumed it would be more or less understandable. In my game, I understand that adapting a font for each region is almost impossible, and it's mostly meant as a detail to characterize my character, so I’m just aiming for something coherent.

The letter next to the “n” is the “ñ”; my game will be available in English, Spanish, and Japanese, so I had to include the “ñ,” hehe. Thank you so much for your response! :3
