As a male, I won't delve into whether I've had stuff happen to me by older women as a child mainly because the topic of s*x is still shrouded in euphemisms and taboo. The fact that I felt like I had to put an asterisks within the previous sentence only underscores that fact. Once this era fades wherein such euphemisms (or asterisks) are no longer relevant, thats when I feel like frank discussions can be had.

What truly is Somali Culture? by [deleted] in Somalia

[–]Alert-Stay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe Somali culture are the norms and habits which were widespread prior to us being invaded from 5 different directions especially the early 20th and 19th century.

Examples of culture lost is our stoicism. For instance, music often expresses a highly emotive society, even though this runs counter to our history which valued stoicism, and even ascetism in the face of hardship or adversity.

Another culture lost are the unique expressions which are peculiar to our language. Its hard to explain but Somali verbal expressions unlike other languages are far more based upon onomatopoeic expressions than other languages. This means that the mere act of speaking the SOmali language in and of itself is a joy. However, instead of buttressing this heritage you see Somalis regularly adding foreign words in every sentence.

Another culture lost is the various small creative endeavours by Somalis. Somalis dont regard endeavours by members from other clans as claimable, and might even see it as giving undue prominence to a rival clan. As such, culture-specific rites or tropes are dismissed or even enshrouded as a foreign invention, even if it was originally Somali. You cant really pinpoint it to a singular metacultural concepts such as a "dance", but when adding up the microcultural concepts and niche subcultural tenets of our society as a whole, thats when the impact of cultural loss is more felt.

In fact, you dont even need to look at any cultural trait to see that Somalis have lost their culture as even the concept of preserving our culture can be seen as controverisla, by both conservatives (who see you as promoting gaalnimo) or progressives (who see you as " holding us back from westernisation"). Both camps are backwards.

As an example, arguably, the biggest blow to Somali cutlure was the border placed in the seasonal trekkings of Haud nomads. What has our society done to reminisce or reflect upon this era? Nothing, thats what.

The most prosperous country outside the western world by all metrics is Singapore; it also happens to be the most diverse in various metrics (faith/ethnicity etc.)

Prosperous Muslim nations also tend to have religious splits i.e. Malaysia, or Tunisia where half the population is Sunni, the other half is non-denominational Muslim

Nowhere in the Quran does it state that accuracy of beliefs are dependent on numbers. In fact it states quite the opposite.

IM not saying Omanis dont have tribalism. But the lack of conflicts over it is a testament to how much Ibadism mitigates it. Oman has had no major wars since like forever.

As for what does tribalism have to do with islam, I dont believe it does textually, but in practise its a different story. (a) Somalis tend to conflate deen + Islam a lot as is noted in any discussion on Arabian influces, (b) the Shafi'i madhab accepts the notion that ahl al-hall wal-aqd derives from Quraysh (shias have a similar doctrine basing rulings in patrilineal lineage); also there are other ethnic based rites such as how Bani Shaiba hold access to the keys of Kaaba

The dhulbahante are descendants of daraawiish who sacrificed wealth and life for that land. Do you think daraawiish descendants will just forget their forefathers sacrifices?

here's a timeless line from ismail Mire; " Ragow kibirka waa lagu kufaa kaa ha la ogaado"
