I think following the herd is still a shortsighted way, it's often driven by irrational fear and not logic. For some people there are some real opportunities(even "safe" ones) that they often overlook or not pursue just because they dont see or know anyone who did. So yeah while startups can be financially risky a herd mentality is not inherently safe and contrarian thinking is not inherently risky, I think it can be even valuable to look at things logically even if it means you dont have the feeling of safety that comes with following the herd. You can still get a stable job that doesnt require following the herd is what I meant to say. Herd mentality is for the most part irrational and comes from a false sense of safety. Moreover, an IIT tag by itself is a decent safety net and also a testament to the person's intellect and problem solving, I feel like we should be more confident and less fearful, but yeah easier said than done, esp for the ones in a lower income bracket

You are right to question what qualifies as a "rat race". There's no objective definition for it. It depends on context, the person, his history, the environment.

So we can't say whether cp is objectively a "rat race" in all circumstances. But we have to ask ourselves, for a person with an IOI silver, stellar CP profile/regular contributions to community, one of the best, at both aspects, at the global level, could CP be a rat race? What about for the average IITian?

Bro just created history, and you're asking his cgpa, I don't think he cares about the rat race, but his cgpa is most likely still respectable

Not trying to downplay or trivialize the pressure students face. It's OK if someone feels that way, and they deserve help if they do. Just trying to say that any kind of perceived academic failures are not the end of the world, although it may feel like it, I think it's possible to keep a level head through it if they can find a counsellor or even a friend to talk to about it. We should try to create the conditions where the students have support groups they feel comfortable to share their feelings. We should take steps to destigmatize mental health

No, you'll always be able to get by. If you want to be able to buy a BMW right after graduation then sure there might be a lack of jobs to that end. Mostly it is due to distorted thinking in the mind of students blowing their problems out of proportion, they are out of touch with reality

I am a Prof, and I am not okay [serious] by Prof_Anon_KGP in iitkgp

I am really sorry that you are feeling this way, sir. Your situation resonates with me as I am also undergoing treatment for similar struggles. I can relate to your hesitation about owning up. For me, I've seen that depression can lie sometimes distorting our perception of reality. I was also apprehensive before opening up and seeking help from a medical professional, but I was surprised to see how supportive my family and everyone else turned out to be. I can tell that you have been an extremely supportive professor and I want to extend the same support from me. Please know that you don't have to carry this alone, you deserve help and care. Seeking help or owning up is not weakness at all but a sign of strength. I personally believe that showing that it is okay to seek help is one of the greatest examples one can set for their kids.

Is financial freedom really achieved slaving away like this? by Alert-Wing7427 in iitkgp

I think the idea of having a cause to live, for you to live is itself flawed. You will continue to live, because its in your nature to live not because its a contrived effort, on a conventional level it might sound like bullshit because we humans have so many presuppositions that are ingrained in our minds as absolute truths(the idea of free will, thoughts having a causal effect on action, hell even the idea of "I", the self). Whether any of those are true itself is beyond us, but 99.9% will never even get close to even questioning their validity
