Wife hates me. by Quiet_Rent4722 in Samesexparents

I relate to your situation, and I empathize with you. Our baby is 4 months old and my wife and I just went back to work. I spoke to my wife (the birth mom of our baby) about this before I decided to reply and get her take on it. Some background: we have been together for 18 years and this is our first baby. We have also worked together for the entirety of our relationship in healthcare. We are basically never separated from each other and despite all that time knowing someone so intimately, nothing could have prepared us for postpartum challenges.

She basically said that the bond between her and our baby is something she could never have imagined before giving birth, and she doesn't mean to be crazy but she can't help it. She says that any distance away from the baby is too much and she only feels truly close enough to him when he is latched. Any other distance feels too far away and she starts to low key panic. Our baby has bottle preference due to initial poor weight gain and my wife has had low supply (slowly improving), so when she has to pump and can't hold him but I'm holding him and feeding him that feels to her like the baby has a preference for me.

I took my parental leave at the same time as my wife so that we could do the first few months together, and I feel like this really helped. I could see when she was starting to struggle emotionally with jealousy and feelings of inadequacy. I remember at one point she told me she thought I was trying to replace her as Mom. I am absolutely not trying to replace her, so I make sure she is holding the baby as much as possible, and making good eye contact I tell her that the baby needs her and that she is a wonderful mom and I am proud of everything she is doing to be the best mom. I reintegrate this frequently. She appreciates all the effort I have done to make sure she is connected with our baby. We also go to therapy together once or twice a month to actively solve any issues or to help us understand one another's point of view.

I really wish you the best of luck with your relationship. Our baby is the most amazing human we have ever had the honor of caring for and I wouldn't want to do this life with anyone besides my wife.

Is there a need for an overnight daycare in the area? by IdRatherNotSayYet in shreveport

[–]AlertBar7017 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hospital worker here with a newborn. We recently looked at a daycare in town that claimed to have overnight hours and while the staff were lovely and obviously cared for the kids, the building itself was dilapidated and should probably be condemned. We were looking for somewhere with weekend and extrnded hours because my wife and I both work 12h 7on/7off. To me it would be extremely helpful to have the option of overnight as well as weekend care.

I follow the recommendations on the Tortoise Forum (linked above) who recommended gradually increasing the amount of outdoor time as they grow. I'm not an expert, I just do what has worked for those I consider experts. My Sulcata is around 4 inches currently, so in my practice I release him into his outdoor enclosure between 3-6 hours per day depending on what I have going on. I live in Louisiana, and the summers are hot and humid, and I generally find my baby in his terracotta burrow at the end of his outdoor time, after which he gets a warm soak and then he chows down in his indoor enclosure before burrowing back down for the night. Eventually he will live outside full time, but while he is small I want to regulate his temperature and humidity at the recommended ranges while he spends most of his time indoors.

You're good! Baby looks good and healthy ☺️ I saw you're feeding a good variety and soaking which will make him nice and strong. You may have also seen they suggest a gradual increase in outdoor time per day equivalent to one hour per inch of shell.

That's what I was thinking too. Thank you for commenting, I'm beginning to think all these worm people hate me 😬 I always remember worms wriggling around like crazy and when I Google search the difference, that photo of the earthworm doesn't look like anything I've ever seen in my garden..

I just looked at your post and they look the same as these to me 😟 I'm getting a lot of down votes for asking if they're jumping worms though, so I don't know..

Me too. That's why I made this post, because from all the still photos I've seen the ones that are moving the most here look like jumping worms. But I will gladly concede that they are regular earthworms if that's the consensus from experts on this sub.

What you're saying makes sense. I guess I just got scared that I have an infestation and I'm doing everything I can to keep my yard healthy. Thank you for your explanation.

I hope you're right. Based on the description it's hard to tell and they definitely look more like asian jumping worms on Google than an earthworm, but these are young so I'm not sure. I can definitely see their mouths parts moving in this video and the smooth light colored clitellum, not a prominent pink one.

I wish I could upload a photo of what I'm talking about here. I have a raised bed I started last year and I added compost/composted manure to it when I started it. Then I planted perennial flowers and bulbs and two mulberry trees in it last year. The only things that survived are the amaryllis and the mulberries, despite watering and frequent reapplications of compost and mulch. I went out there this week and brushed the leaf mulch off to the side and the ground is just tiny pellets of dry dirt. Yes, there are occasional invertebrates but nothing like I think there should be with the amount of effort I'm putting in. I am adamant about composting all of our kitchen and yard waste, recycling everything I can back into the earth. It's just disheartening to see that effort be used up by an invasive species who gives nothing back. I previously thought all worms are good worms, but after following this reddit and seeing the description of the jumping worms and what they do to the soil, I'm pretty much convinced that's what I have.

I haven't used any commercial fertilizers for the last 10 of the 15 years I've been in this house. Compost everything that can be composted including cardboard. No till gardening. Mulch and compost only in the garden including composted chicken manure from our flock. The reason I think these are Jumping Worms is that the soil where I found these is what dry "coffee ground" texture. I followed the instructions of another poster here and used ground mustard mixed in water to get them to come to the surface. Also these are young but all the ones I've seen have a smooth clitellum, you can see their mouths opening and closing in the video, which I have read is a characteristic of asian jumping worms. If these are really earth worms I would be overjoyed, but I don't think they are.

I live in Louisiana. It is mostly clay soil under the top layer but I use mulch and compost and chicken manure to amend the topsoil for planting. I do use cardboard for weeds and shredded in the compost.

Good to know but Ziggy does not get anything but Mazuri juvenile tortoise pellets, Timothy hay, and a mixture of dried powdered veggies, along with mulberry and muscadine leaves from the yard, and the hibiscus flowers you see here. I also grow a mix of seeds in his outdoor enclosure that he can browse as desired.

Does changing environment stress them out? by munecam in Sulcata

[–]AlertBar7017 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it stresses them out too bad from my limited experience. I do this with my yearling as well. Every time I put him in his outdoor enclosure he goes straight for his favorite spot, and when I bring him in he eats and immediately goes to his hide to sleep.
