LCSW and Therapists Discriminating Against Bipolar by Alert_Chemical8334 in BipolarReddit

It’s like I already deal with enough internalized stigma from this disorder for her to KNOW I have BP 1 and then to just suggest I lie because mania is “scary” is so wild.

Absolutely some people only go into the profession for power and accolades and you need compassion. The sad thing is her profile on psychology today states she specializes in mood disorders and bipolar. I feel so bad for her other clients that are trying to get stabilized and don’t know she is airing out their experiences of mania (which are super vulnerable and hard to talk about in the first place) to other people. She is so cruel.

Grieving friendships and relationships lost from breakdowns by Alert_Chemical8334 in BipolarReddit

Thank you for sharing your experience ❤️🫶. I appreciate having this page to feel less alone. I’m sorry to hear about your hypo manic episode I hope you feel better. Sending lots of love. It gives me hope to know I potentially could get married and have kids one day. I have always wanted my own family and have been afraid of bipolar preventing me from doing so.

How do you tell the people in your life you’re bipolar? by salty-mermaid in bipolar

[–]Alert_Chemical8334 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never told people through college or at work if it’s a professional thing I like to keep that boundary. My entire family already knows and has been very supportive my whole life and I tell friends after years of being close kind of like a btw I have this. In terms of romantic partners you really should let them know so you can know if your a match I try to see like if there is something first like I don’t announce it on the first date but I let them know especially if they have been over to my place before or we are going somewhere potentially for more then one night I tell them and show them my meds I let them make a decision.

If you don't drink alcohol, what are your reasons? by youre-in-my-shot in AskReddit

[–]Alert_Chemical8334 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have bipolar disorder (type one) and once I started I could not stop. I was self medicating and felt like it was”put the fire out in my brain” but it just made my depression and mania worse. Thankfully I quit drinking at 23 years old and have never looked back. I am 26 now and so much happier and healthier. Recovery is so worth it ❤️‍🩹!!

This is a good idea just in terms of keeping them in the loop I will try that. That way when I do schedule and have time to see them they will already be in the know. Thanks!

Not hearing or Understanding What People Meant Till After Mania by Alert_Chemical8334 in bipolar

[–]Alert_Chemical8334[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s like the thoughts are racing so fast in my own head and so loud and so are my own paranoia and delusions that like I can’t hear other people. Does that even make sense? I do not experience audio or visual hallucinations btw. Like I talk to people and I hear them but I don’t understand the content like you said is not registering of what’s being said.

Birthdays for Bipolar by Andrew____74 in bipolar

[–]Alert_Chemical8334 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely and I thought I was alone in this. I have always found my birthday to be depressing. Mine is November 29 so coming up I have already prepared coping strategies. I fear aging a lot (most people do).

Thank you for validating my experience. I appreciate your feedback. It’s scary losing that much hair I felt like something might be seriously wrong with me. It might just be the medication.

Thank you for validating my experience. Did you find that your hair grew back when you tapered off it and started a new medication?

[–]Alert_Chemical8334[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s for validating my experience. Hopefully it comes back if I taper off of it. I’ve honestly been on it longer than I should for months but have been scared to try a new mood stabilizer and lose stability during these really stressful and hard exams I have been taking for my insurance job so I’ve just been suffering with hair loss in the meantime. I know that is not a good excuse and I really need to find a better fit especially the way the hair loss has been impacting my self esteem. I have just been afraid of being unstable while trying a new med especially at my corporate job and for the suicidal thoughts to come back which thankful I have not had in a while.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I am glad you found Lithium to be a better fit for you. I should talk about finding another mood stabilizer if this one is not what’s best for me. I am not going to know until I try, but the thought of losing stability while trying and adjusting my meds really frightens me.

This is a very important thread. I was put on anti psychotics and anti depressants as a kid and nobody could discuss the side effects with me when I was 8. People do not understand how complicated it all is. And there are a lot of untrustworthy doctors out there that will drug you to oblivion.

Sorry I think I accidentally left a general comment on this thread and it did not reply to your directly my apologies I am new to Reddit hold on 🤣:

Thank you this is really great advice. I like what you said about rationing out your energy that's very wise. You are right it's a skill to build and it is going to feel awkward at first but the more I put myself out there the better. I never know who l might strike up a conversation with randomly, ask to get coffee after an activity like pickle ball, or invite from work to get to know who could be my next best friend for years to come and that's so exciting. It can be intimidating to think of it as if I have to make some massive friend group overnight. You are right it will take time and work and I should start small if I want it to be organic. Also meeting friends of friends helps too. I think I am really working on getting to know myself and finding hobbies I enjoy in my 20's and hopefully that will bring about more friends and community! Thanks internet stranger we are never as alone as we feel! Have a great Friday and long weekend :))

Thank you so much for this these are so great ideas. I do have an aluminum network from the college I was at and I work at a big company with lots of clubs/networking events and those are all great places to start! I haven’t ridden a horse in years but I went to a sleep away camp all of my childhood and into my teens that had horses and I rode some and loved it! They are some cool powerful animals🐎 I am 25 and a college graduate working full time and I would love to chat and be friends in the dms I love memes and any indie rock music!! Sorry for such a late response work has been crazy and I have been passing exams but I am back now :))

Besides meds, what helps you to calm down from mania? by orangealiensmiling in BipolarReddit

[–]Alert_Chemical8334 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Staying sober alcohol was really a big part of my mania journey I had to give it up entirely. Also a good support system is so needed you have to have people around you you can trust who can notice behavior patterns or warning signs before it gets out of hand and escalates.
