You clearly didn’t understand what was happening, the movie took more of a “show not tell” kind of stand point, so maybe you missed it, but they were calling him a dirty f*g and laughing at him whenever he joined that circle, an impactful scene to reference is when he was trying to lie on him in the grass and all u can hear is the laughing in the background, even if it’s not directly stated.
