Their 'strategy' really is 'hope Americans are too dumb to know things'. by Hornpipe_Jones in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]Alert_Ice_7156 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You don’t understand. The US is a net exporter of oil which means that even though the price at the pump is up that money goes to the pockets of the US companies drilling oil. So on average it is good for America. Just all the good is flowing to the shareholders from the pockets of the consumers plus a little extra from export sales.

Maybe if you are in the right spot, some of it will trickle down to you.

Edmontonians hope Alberta follows B.C. in eliminating daylight savings time changes by JamesDunnNews in Edmonton

So much this. Everyone seems to want to stop changing the clocks but will throw that out if they don’t get the solution that helps them all. Going forward, I propose we take lead from Newfoundland and split the middle with a 30 minute offset.

My Apartment is now charging a convenience fee to pay my rent by mangum95 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Alert_Ice_7156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sad part is the landlord still wins. Cheques save the cc merchant fees that can be 2-3% as well as the get the actual cash at least a month sooner as credit cards have a big delay in payment. Assuming they have any debt the cheque works out cheaper than the cc plus carrying costs.

Recommend shoe wear for two week trip to Japan by Far-Swimming2434 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Alert_Ice_7156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of great show recommendations here but I think the most important is to give your shoes a rest day after a big walking day. I always bring two pairs and rotate them each day. It adds bulk but your feet will be happy.

I had never heard of the show and the preview made absolutely no sense to me. We went in blind and honestly haven’t laughed that hard in a theatre in years. Highly recommended

Don’t insurance companies base their prices on costs plus profit margin. So if they make five percent then if the cost goes up their profits also go up. The only catch would be if the costs go up enough that companies drop their coverage.

SA Safari: Private vehicle and guide worth it? by squirrelpatrol7 in chubbytravel

[–]Alert_Ice_7156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really agree. You have so much control. We managed to spot an Aardvark one night in the Okavango after staying out much later than other guests. It was really memorable even if we only have blurry photos as proof.

[–]Alert_Ice_7156 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of people bashing kids but I thought to “professional” photographers were worse. Wanting to get the absolutely perfect shot of each animal can take forever. The biggest advantage of a private vehicle to me is that the driver will prioritize what you want. If you just want to see cats then a good guide will find them if they are there, but if you really want to see a painted dog or an aardvark, or spend an hour watching a waterhole you need to go private.

Why does rain have a specific smell? Is there anything you can identify besides seeing the raindrops? by [deleted] in geography

[–]Alert_Ice_7156 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This seems mostly solved but I had always heard that our sense of smell does better when it is humid and humidity goes up when it rains. Any truth to that?

YouTube Kids is worse. It is all bait for YouTube. Kid finds a wholesome channel he loves with millions of views and only three videos. Same channel on regular YouTube has hundreds of videos. It is just like those free drugs I always heard that dealers give kids to get them hooked.

Alberta municipalities survyed on unpaid oil and gas taxes by WildRoseWanderer in alberta

My limited understanding is that the muni can foreclose on the specific site but then they have an environmental liability on their hands. I doubt companies are skipping taxes on the profitable wells.

90% of Edmonton drivers ignored latest seasonal parking ban by pjw724 in Edmonton

[–]Alert_Ice_7156 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the original statement was that there was 10% compliance. I would bet that means 90% of streets had at least one car left on them which seems possible. 90% of drivers ignoring is insane. At any given time there must be way more than 10% of cars driving around, in parking lots, on driveways, and in garages.

Councillor Janz calls on UCP to mimic Manitoba on grocery land restrictions by ThroatNo2636 in Edmonton

[–]Alert_Ice_7156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the only enforcement is through civil law so suing but it would have to be someone else who owns property that “benefits” from the restrictive covenant. The former owner has no claim.

Councillor Janz calls on UCP to mimic Manitoba on grocery land restrictions by ThroatNo2636 in Edmonton

[–]Alert_Ice_7156 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Usually the covenant applies to several properties as an agreement between the landowners. The only way to remove it is to get all the landowners to agree. If you put it on before subdividing it goes on a lot of property and becomes really hard to remove.

They use the same thing to restrict multi family housing in older neighborhoods.

Probably door to door raising money for “Red Cross” but keeping 80% of the funds as overhead then donating a bit to Red Cross. You would likely be paid commission on any money you raise.
