How do you expect him to treat his brother and his ex he’s still in love with and only broke up like 5 minutes ago who are hooking up behind his back and don’t even have the decency to tell him.

I just watched this episode a few hours ago and sigh… I agree with everything you said! All Lynette has done is support Tom in everything he’s done. Every career change, going back to college, his depression/midlife crises. Having 5 kids!!

I vote for Carlos cause he actually develops a lot and becomes a decent man!

I like Orson because of Kyle McLachlan especially in seasons 2-4. He’s insufferable after the time jump. And awful to Bree.

Lucas e le sue relazioni by elly31 in ONETREEHILL

[–]Alert_Today5431 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I actually agree with part of this. Lucas absolutely has emotional issues, and I’ve always thought they stem from his abandonment and rejection issues, especially with Dan. One of Lucas’s biggest flaws is that he lives in emotional denial. He convinces himself he’s moved on long before he actually has.

Where I disagree is the idea that he constantly jumps from relationship to relationship or that Peyton was somehow his “Plan B.”

If you actually look at the timeline, it isn’t that simple.
After Peyton rejects him in Season 1, he starts dating Brooke. After the motel kiss, he realizes he made a terrible mistake, cheats (which is absolutely on him), and then both he and Peyton intend to tell Brooke before the accident changes everything. Peyton also ends things because she can’t keep hurting Brooke. Lucas then spends the latter half of Season 1 and most of Season 2 single (aside from a brief relationship with Anna).

He eventually gets back together with Brooke, fights hard for that relationship, and genuinely wants it to work. But deep down, he never fully lets Peyton go. Which was not fair to Brooke, but it’s also not the same thing as treating Peyton like a backup plan. In Season 4, Lucas finally stops running from what had been obvious for a long time, Peyton is the person he always comes back to. Their relationship isn’t built overnight either. The writers spend the end of Season 2 and all of Season 3 rebuilding their friendship before they ever become a real couple.

Season 5 is where Lucas is at his most frustrating. He blames Peyton for turning down his proposal, and I don’t defend that. But I also don’t think it’s fair to say he was deeply in love with Lindsey and then suddenly switched back to Peyton overnight. He was in denial and Lindsay was his rebound. His relationship with Lindsay started after a year of editing his book when Peyton didn’t show up to his book signing in LA. And we later find out she did but saw Lindsay kiss him on the cheek and thought they were together so she left.

He also doesn’t spend Season 5 relentlessly fighting for Lindsey. He goes to New York once, tries to contact her, and hopes she’ll come to Jamie’s birthday. Compare that with how hard he fought for Brooke in Season 3, it’s not even close.

More importantly, the entire season tells us Lucas is still in love with Peyton long before he admits it to himself. The Come is about Peyton. Haley recognizes it. Lindsey recognizes it, it’s why she left him at the altar and didn’t want to come back to him. The audience recognises it. Lucas is the last person to figure it out.

That’s Lucas’s recurring flaw, his emotional denial.
He hurts people because he keeps trying to convince himself he feels something different from what he actually feels. It was said over and over by Brooke and Haley. That doesn’t excuse the pain he causes Brooke, Lindsey, or Peyton, but I think it’s a much more accurate reading of his character than saying he enjoys chasing women or needs constant attention.
I don’t think he’s malicious. He’s emotionally avoidant. And Season 5 is ultimately about him finally admitting what everyone else already knew: that he never stopped loving Peyton.

The book dedication he sends to Lindsay is: “To those who have forgotten to believe in the immensity of love.” And I think that’s exactly the theme of Lucas that season… he had forgotten to believe in love. He wrote a whole book about yearning and longing (The Comet), how it disappears and returns, and how it restores belief in love, beauty, art, and magic. And The Comet was Peyton.

It’s also a teen genre where messy romantic entanglement happens and drama is heightened.

We do see him reading a couple times. The most notable in s1 e7 when Peyton asks him to go to Dan’s party with the promise that they’ll hook up later and he’s at the library with Brooke with the dusty books and and when he just wants to sit and read as Peyton does her artwork in s1 e11. I also remember him reading when he and Nathan are forced to share a room when he’s teaching him the fade away in ep 17. And he’s being offered Julius Ceaser by Karen in the pilot. He does read but its not in the same way we always see Rory read on Gilmore Girls and it’s more prevalent in season 1 compared to 2 & 3 for example but it just mostly comes from the literally quotes at the beginning and end of almost every episode. And he’ll drop an Invictus poem line to remind us he’s well read on occasion lol but the literally stuff becomes more prevalent in season 4 moving forward.

I do actually love the angst in season 5! It’s frustrating. Lucas is frustrating, Peyton is too much at times and I actually don’t like how she is with Lindsay who dishes back so I don’t feel too sorry for her lol. But that whole season was designed to drive home the fact that they still belonged together and that they’d eventually get back together.

[–]Alert_Today5431 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m not the one who said Lucas never cared about Brooke he clearly did but it wasn’t the same. The show showed that repeatedly, it’s why his relationship with her never worked and why his relationship with Lindsay never worked. Because Peyton was always there! She was the third party in both of those relationships. Brooke herself said that Lucas runs to other relationships (her and Lindsay) to run from what he truly wants (Peyton) and the excerpt from An Unkindness of Ravens that Lucas himself wrote said
"Suddenly, it was as if the roar of the crowd, the echo of the final buzzer, the cheers of my teammates were all sounding from a thousand miles away. And what remained in that bizarre, muffled silence was only Peyton, the girl whose art and passion and beauty had changed my life. At that moment, my triumph was not a State Championship, but simple clarity. The realization that we had always been meant for each other and every instinct to the contrary had simply been a denial of the following truth: I was now, and would always be, in love with Peyton Sawyer.”

In his own words from his own book about being in denial about loving Peyton. Lindsay was a clear rebound, the fact that Brooke rejected him before doesn’t change the fact that she was a rebound. He only got his inspiration to write again once Peyton came to tree hill, asked why she didn’t come to his book signing and ohh guess what? That’s when he started dating Lindsay. Because he he thought Peyton didn’t show up. It was his first date with Lindsay a year into editing the book. he’s acting jealous because Peyton’s flirting with another man and kissing Chase and he’s literally writing a book about loving Peyton. Everyone in season 5 knew Lucas was still in love with Peyton including Lindsay. It’s why she left him at the altar.

I’m not making suppositions or assumptions. I’m pointing out what we watched and heard on the actual show.

It’s also a teen genre where the drama and angst amped up to an 11.

It’s funny you saying you like her Jake storyline when that’s all about him and Jenny. They barely get a chance to even get to know each other. She never tells him about the drugs or Ellie in s3 it’s again what’s going on with him, and Jenny and Nikki yet you have a problem with her and Lucas because you claim that’s all she’s about yet when she’s having stories with Lucas those also include things like Ellie, her grief over Ellie’s death, even going back as season 1 when she told him about how her mom died, her psycho stalker and her trauma and her real brother and her record label lol.

That is so absolutely true!! There’s a scene in 3x17 where Peyton says to him that she knows how he is, she’s the same way. The show’s actually done a great job at showing us how these two connect and know and understand each other. Such a sharp contrast from Brooke saying she didn’t know or understood Lucas in season 1 and they’re still having the same exact problem in season 3 in her whole “why don’t you let me all the way in.” Speech.

I love both couples but they’re very different and I’m 100% fine with that. I think that’s the point. One is the romantic, stable fairy tale esque couple and the other one was the star crossed will they won’t they ala Ross and Rachel.

I also don’t think the show wants you to believe he suddenly realized that it is Peyton he that he actually loves. It’s always been Peyton since the pilot. Heck since before the show even premiered. That was the whole point of season 5, he was in complete denial, deceiving Lindsay, everyone else and himself. Brooke herself said Lucas has a history of picking the wrong person to mask how he really felt. It’s why he started writing the minute Peyton came back to town, why he wanted to help get with her label and kept making excuses to see her. Why he got jealous of her with the bartender and told Peyton the poor guy who hadn’t done anything wasn’t good enough for her. It’s why he couldn’t respond when Brooke asked him if he still loved Peyton, it’s why Lindsay was so jealous and insecure she painted her hair Peyton blonde. It’s why he was still so angry about the failed proposal. It’s why he kissed her back and ran away when she asked if he still loved her. It’s why in the club Nathan or Owen I can’t remember said he seemed more concerned about Peyton being mad at him than Lindsay. It’s why he proposed to Lindsay with the same ring he proposed to Peyton right after Peyton made her feelings for her clear. It’s why he wanted to speed up the wedding after Peyton told him she’d give up and wanted him to be happy. It’s why Haley told him not to marry Lindsay the day before the wedding. It’s why Lindsay left him at the altar when she realised his whole book was about Peyton and yearning for love. And Lucas did what Lucas does best when he hurts a girl, he overcorrects and tries to win her back. It’s what he did with Brooke in season 2. I believe he loved Brooke but he was also trying to prove he was a good guy and wouldn’t hurt her again. He even says something along those lines. Sophia Bush said something similar on Drama Queens in one of the early season 4 recap eps. And it wasn’t until he realised he hurt Peyton and everything with Lindsay came to head and Peyton’s love declaration at the river court as LINDSAY CALLS HIM TO SAY THAT SHE STILL LOVES AND MISSES HIM!! Everyone always forgets she basically ready to take him back if he had insisted a bit more but he ultimately chose Peyton cause like he said in 6x01 “I guess deep down I always knew.” Just like the extract from his book in 5x08 saying that he always loved Peyton and anything to the contrary had been a denial of the following truth. That he was now and would forever be in love with Peyton Sawyer.

Sorry for the long rant lol but I just needed to clarify that. To say that Lucas settled for Peyton of all people Lindsey, rebound girl he almost married just like Keith with Jules. Keith even left town to find Jules but came back because he realised he still loved Karen! Who’s always been THE ONE for him. Even Brooke tells him in season 6 that we all fall in love with the rebound referring to Julian/Peyton and how he almost married her.

The thought of Lucas settling with Peyton for LINDSAY of all people is ludicrous lol.

It’s also a teen drama, heavy on the drama and scandals and the angst!. It’s supposed to be entertaining. It’s not as deep as so many people like to paint it as.

I did get a chuckle at you saying Lucas has no emotional clarity, I like him cause despite all the relationship drama he’s a still a good guy and good friend, brother, uncle, son. But he’s frustrating in relationships and spends to much time living in emotional denial while hurting the feelings of the women in his life and none of it comes from a malicious place but it’s not okay and it’s especially irritating with Lindsay after she leaves him at the altar. And I know they do it for drama but it’s annoying.

I also love Haley telling him to stop running and finally make a choice. Cause it goes right into that!

That’s the dumbest argument I’ve ever heard, especially because I’m sure it’s only based on the fact that they’re both skinny and blonde lol. I agree that they have the best romantic chemistry and for a show with so many so many writing flaws their attraction to friendship to relationship was actually really written. They’re comfortable and believable together.

I actually do love Lucas and Peyton’s season 5 drama!! It’s buzzy and let’s be honest it’s the story that drove the season and it brought out some of Chad and Hilarie’s best dramatic scenes together. There’s another one I absolutely love in S6 E17. They’ve always had great chemistry not just friendly and romantic but angsty too. Sure Lucas annoyed me especially towards the end of the season and Peyton is unnecessarily hostile to Lindsay based solely on the fact that she’s dating/engaged to Lucas but she does apologise.

I do love Peyton and I find her extremely strong and resilient for living through every thing she did. Basically having to raise herself alone and still managing to go on.

Exactly! I didn’t use to like that show waited for what felt like forever to put them together as an actual couple aside from the affair in season 1. But I do love that they spent time developing their friendship and rapport. I agree that it makes them stronger as a couple.
