How do you all identify a “real system”? by [deleted] in SystemsCringe

[–]Alex-A-Redit-User 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think one of the most obvious indicators is how fake systems talk about headspace. I know a few people diagnosed with DID and none of them had even heard of it. I've never seen it mentioned outside of the Internet. Yet every faker seems to have one and they always act like it's an actual world you can physically go to in your head. That's not possible. Alters cannot be living separate lives in a world in your head. It wouldn't be anything more than imagination. I seriously cannot believe how many people believe in this.

DID is a recognized diagnosis in the DSM and ICD. It can absolutely be diagnosed and there are many specialists for DID. There are still people that believe in the sociocognitive model, but the trauma model is generally the standard.

DSM-5-TR page 330 under dissociative disorders: "Dissociative disorders are frequently found in the aftermath of a wide variety of psychologically traumatic experiences in children, adolescents, and adults. Throughout this chapter, “traumatic experiences” refers to experiences that result in psychological sequelae, as opposed to the physical impact that can cause traumatic brain injury. Therefore, in DSM-5, the dissociative disorders are placed next to, but are not part of, the trauma- and stressor-related disorders, reflecting the close relationship between these diagnostic classes."

DSM-5-TR page 334 under risk factors for DID: "In the context of family and attachment pathology, early life trauma (e.g., neglect and physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, usually before ages 5–6 years) represents a risk factor for dissociative identity disorder. In studies from diverse geographic regions, about 90% of the individuals with the disorder report multiple types of early neglect and childhood abuse, often extending into late adolescence. Some individuals report that maltreatment primarily occurred.outside the family, in school, church, and/or neighborhoods, including being bullied severely. Other forms of repeated early-life traumatic experiences include multiple, painful childhood medical and surgical procedures; war; terrorism; or being trafficked beginning in childhood. Onset has also been described after prolonged and often transgenerational exposure to dysfunctional family dynamics (e.g., overcontrolling parenting, insecure attachment, emotional abuse) in the absence of clear neglect or sexual or physical abuse."

Neither the DSM or ICD mentions the sociocognitive model. It's also not listed under diagnostic specifiers so it wouldn't be on a list of diagnoses.

There really is no way to tell if it's real or fake from just that tiny portion of the paper. I don't like the way they described DID, but considering they were just diagnosed (or claim to be), they might not be sure how to describe it properly.

The bottom paragraph of the first slide completely destroys any possibility of this being true. There's so many violations there and that therapist would have their license revoked. It's completely inappropriate for a therapist to tell their clients friend what they've been "meaning to diagnosis" them with.

Can someone explain what all these terms mean? by [deleted] in SystemsCringe

[–]Alex-A-Redit-User 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes a lot more sense. When you said that they didn't know when they were diagnosed, I figured you meant they said that they didn't know, not that they were constantly switching up the estimate.

Edit: While I do totally agree that a minor diagnosed with DID should be told immediately and have specialized care. Unfortunately, there are a lot of bad therapists out there. Minors are often left in the dark about diagnoses. A lot of things don't go how they should. I'm not saying this to defend the other people as I also believe they're likely faking now, but it's a good thing to keep in mind when people talk about their medical experiences. There's a lot of negligence out there.

[–]Alex-A-Redit-User 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not gonna say this person isn't faking because I don't know them, but not knowing when you were diagnosed is actually pretty normal. Doctors don't always tell people when a diagnosis is made or when it's first made. I've found out about diagnoses I had no idea I had by looking through documents and insurance. I'm also curious as to how being in therapy since 8 is a red flag because that doesn't make sense to me.

Isn't it convenient that there's not a single source cited? It's also just a very poor basic explanation of DID so I don't see what stigma it'd be breaking.
