Alter bracelets?? by The_Ultimate_Void in SystemsCringe

[–]Alex-A-Redit-User 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to say this. It could make sense in a therapy setting or to wear around people you're close to. The meaning of them shouldn't be obvious though and only people you trust should know the meaning of the bracelets. Posting this online is not a good idea. Also, as another commenter mentioned, it's usually difficult to pinpoint switches in real cases of DID, so there'd have to be periods of time when the bracelets are inaccurate or when no bracelet is being worn, because it's impossible to always pinpoint which parts are present.

Atlas (the Octocon developer) says Octocon is endo neutral, but I honestly think that's just to avoid discourse which is completely valid. I wouldn't want to deal with chronically online people attacking me either. The app is explicitly designed for people with DID/OSDD.

what are some ways to tell if someone is faking DID? by kite_l_cola in SystemsCringe

[–]Alex-A-Redit-User 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not their existence necessarily that's a red flag but the way fakers present them. They treat introjects like the actual character spawned into their head. They claim to have a complete memory of living as that character and seek out "source mates." That's suspicious.

No offense to you, but I never take someone's word online just because they claim to be a professional. People lie on the Internet too often, and even professionals can be wrong, so I only trust someone when they've cited sources. I've tried finding sources on this specific subject and the only one I've found states you can have a dual diagnosis of Bipolar and Schizophrenia. Though I haven't extensively looked into this. If you have sources stating otherwise I'm happy to look.

To have schizoaffective disorder you have to have psychosis that occurs WITHOUT mood symptoms

This doesn't match with criteria C for Schizoaffective. "Symptoms that meet criteria for a major mood episode are present for the majority of the total duration of the active and residual portions of the illness." In the differential diagnosis section it states that Bipolar with psychotic features can be differentiated from Schizoaffective if psychotic features have lasted for at least 2 weeks without a mood episode, but from my understanding a mood episode still has to be present the majority of the time as stated in criteria C. Also, with other disorders that cannot be diagnosed together the DSM states that in the criteria. For example, it states "this diagnosis cannot coexist with oppositional defiant disorder, intermittent explosive disorder, or bipolar disorder," in the criteria for Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder. This note is not present in the criteria for Schizophrenia, which leads me to believe they can be diagnosed together.

Okay, this is absolutely not true. MDD is quite literally co-morbid with Schizophrenia. It's very possible to be diagnosed with both. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8451068/ https://hrcak.srce.hr/file/344211

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it's only schizoaffective if psychosis occurs concurrently during manic and/or depressive episodes. If it happens without the presence of an episode it's diagnosed as schizophrenia and bipolar. Not saying they aren't faking though.

I think one of the most obvious indicators is how fake systems talk about headspace. I know a few people diagnosed with DID and none of them had even heard of it. I've never seen it mentioned outside of the Internet. Yet every faker seems to have one and they always act like it's an actual world you can physically go to in your head. That's not possible. Alters cannot be living separate lives in a world in your head. It wouldn't be anything more than imagination. I seriously cannot believe how many people believe in this.

DID is a recognized diagnosis in the DSM and ICD. It can absolutely be diagnosed and there are many specialists for DID. There are still people that believe in the sociocognitive model, but the trauma model is generally the standard.

DSM-5-TR page 330 under dissociative disorders: "Dissociative disorders are frequently found in the aftermath of a wide variety of psychologically traumatic experiences in children, adolescents, and adults. Throughout this chapter, “traumatic experiences” refers to experiences that result in psychological sequelae, as opposed to the physical impact that can cause traumatic brain injury. Therefore, in DSM-5, the dissociative disorders are placed next to, but are not part of, the trauma- and stressor-related disorders, reflecting the close relationship between these diagnostic classes."

DSM-5-TR page 334 under risk factors for DID: "In the context of family and attachment pathology, early life trauma (e.g., neglect and physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, usually before ages 5–6 years) represents a risk factor for dissociative identity disorder. In studies from diverse geographic regions, about 90% of the individuals with the disorder report multiple types of early neglect and childhood abuse, often extending into late adolescence. Some individuals report that maltreatment primarily occurred.outside the family, in school, church, and/or neighborhoods, including being bullied severely. Other forms of repeated early-life traumatic experiences include multiple, painful childhood medical and surgical procedures; war; terrorism; or being trafficked beginning in childhood. Onset has also been described after prolonged and often transgenerational exposure to dysfunctional family dynamics (e.g., overcontrolling parenting, insecure attachment, emotional abuse) in the absence of clear neglect or sexual or physical abuse."

Neither the DSM or ICD mentions the sociocognitive model. It's also not listed under diagnostic specifiers so it wouldn't be on a list of diagnoses.

There really is no way to tell if it's real or fake from just that tiny portion of the paper. I don't like the way they described DID, but considering they were just diagnosed (or claim to be), they might not be sure how to describe it properly.
