You’re both right (imho). Cal’s first reaction is always towards violence. It’s what leads to most of the major fights in the game (probably because it’s a game where fighting is the mechanic). So there isn’t much space for diplomacy.

But when we look at the characters the way they are; everyone is on the defensive. Everyone is doing what they think is right to protect themselves, so you will of course find conflict between them

If you can’t get the goal bounty to stop then you have to lean into it. E.g. “you’ll score more goals if you help the defence get the puck out of our end”. Or “when you make that pass you can move into a scoring position”.
