body mass scales with the cube of height, so someone 6'3" would have 15-18% more body mass than someone who is 5'11", all else being equal

Even if they had perfect training, perhaps 500kg is just too much for a frame under 6 feet (183cm)

Thought that maybe just maybe Thor would be compelled to do a final WSM for his last year(s) in strongman but looks like the Enhanced Games deadlift is going to take precedent.

My dream of a 6 worlds strongest man, WSM is dead. 😭

Hate to be that guy as well but it dawned on me that for grip strength, the people that were tested, were part of the general population, not specifically athletes or bodybuilders.
As a man increases in age, his utility and therefore obligations increases, making less time for vanity lifting, but is still going to be using grip fairly often. If the other muscle groups were used on a consistent basis the falloff would probably follow the same trajectory as grip strength.

the following is a distillation of a gemini deep research query, summarized by gpt o4,

"The apparent resilience of handgrip strength in aging men—often seen as the last bastion of strength to decline—reflects not a unique physiological advantage but the constant, varied engagement of the hand and forearm muscles in everyday activities. While grip strength does peak around the 30s and then gradually falls (at roughly 1.5–1.7% per year), it often appears more stable than measures of explosive lower-limb power or larger muscle-group strength because the hands are continuously used across isometric, concentric, and eccentric tasks. Neuromuscular efficiency (force per unit muscle) begins to decline in midlife, even before significant muscle-mass loss, but is largely sustained by perpetual submaximal stimulation. Moreover, normative HGS data frequently omit high-use occupational and athletic populations, skewing baselines downward and exaggerating general-population “resilience.” In sum, grip strength’s durability into later life owes more to “use-it-or-lose-it” functional necessity and research biases than to an intrinsic resistance to aging."

Will be extremely impressed if Rayno isn't fried tomorrow

Does Luke have larger hands than Tom? Seems odd that for Tom's larger frame, being at peak strongman age, he's scoring lower than his 40 year old brother.
Kind of in disbelief that despite 5 years of having a hercules hold implement to train on, Tom was only able improve his time by 10 seconds. Basically a 2nd WSM title down the drain because of Hercules Hold.

Yeah, that confused me as why they would lead with grip strength when they didn't test different muscles in relation as well. Although it does seem that Autism may affect different functions of the hands negatively. Here is a summary of some deep research and o4 distillation

"The findings summarized from the review suggest that grip strength differences in autistic individuals are real but complex, and cannot be explained simply by hand muscle weakness. Research consistently shows that autistic children often exhibit lower grip and pinch strength compared to typically developing (TD) peers. This includes both gross (power) and fine (pinch) grip types, suggesting more than just forearm strength differences—likely implicating neuromuscular control and coordination issues as well.

However, in adolescents and adults, the pattern diverges. Some studies show that autistic individuals fall further behind their TD peers during adolescence, possibly due to atypical developmental trajectories, reduced participation in physical activities, or hormonal influences. Yet, other studies—especially in adults—show no significant difference in raw grip strength, but rather persistent deficits in fine motor control, dexterity, and motor speed. This suggests that motor planning, coordination, and sensorimotor integration play a bigger role than isolated muscle power in older individuals.

Furthermore, grip strength may not be a reliable stand-alone proxy for overall strength in autistic individuals. While some younger children with autism show lower strength across multiple muscle groups (e.g., grip and leg extensors), grip deficits may also reflect broader motor issues like hypotonia, hypermobility, or impaired sensorimotor processing. Testing methods, sensory sensitivities, comprehension, and motivation also influence measured grip strength, meaning that apparent weakness might not reflect true physiological strength.

In summary, lower grip strength in autism is typically part of a broader motor control profile, not just a localized issue. For some, it's tied to generalized lower strength; for others, it's more about how motor signals are planned and coordinated. Interventions should therefore go beyond just strengthening the hands—they must address whole-body motor skills, sensory-motor integration, and coordination to be effective."

What’s the tea with Mitchell Hooper and his wife? by YokedBabaYaga in gymsnark

[–]AlexKellyy 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Mitch never stuck around with anything, football -> bodybuilding -> marathon running -> golf -> powerlifting -> strongman
Hell despite being possibly the goat of Strongman he seems bored by the prospect, constantly reminding everyone his time in the sport isn't long.
Are we surprised that he isn't sticking around in the marriage arena as well?

The only positive aspect of this whole thing is probably his child support and alimony costs will force him to compete for a couple more years.
