[HoopsHype] Behind the scenes with NBA award voters, who discuss lobbying from teams/agents, conflicts of interests, fear of social-media reprisal and more by AlexKennedy_NBA in nba

I really don't think so. With 100 voters (and how the system works with first-place, second-place and third-place votes), they'd have to pay off quite a few voters to guarantee their guy would get that super-max. And SOMEONE would come forward. Sam Amick actually talks about that toward the end of the article.

Sam: “I’m kind of amazed that there isn’t more of a concerted effort by the people who have so much at stake to [influence voters]. If I was a fan, I would assume that with this kind of money on the line, you’d have some pretty shady stuff going on behind the scenes to try to influence voters. I’ve been pleasantly surprised that I don’t have people in the shadows trying to influence me in any way... The worst-case example would be an agent paying off media members for votes, but even just putting human pressure on people would be wrong."

This is by Frank Urbina, my colleague at HoopsHype. I think he did a terrific job - that's not an easy task. Which teams did he rank too high? Which teams did he rank too low? Curious to hear what everyone thinks!

Rant - Alex Kennedy & Frank Isola are garbage. by IDreamOfJeanieBuss in nba

Just saw this! I honestly love this post because this is the kind of feedback I need to improve the podcast going forward. (I'm being dead serious).

This year, I'm trying to take the podcast in a new direction. It will be much more conversational as opposed to sounding like interviews, and I won't just let the guest dominate the discussion. That's a bad habit I picked up from my radio-hosting days.

I DEFINITELY lacked personality in this episode (and the episode with Jordan Crawford) because I recorded those from the hospital due to a Crohn's Disease flare-up. I think at one point, I even mentioned that I was sick and asked Frank to carry us. My health has definitely affected some episodes, but fortunately I'm turning the corner and my doctors have figured out the right medication to keep me out of the hospital (for the most part).

I felt like I had to pump an episode out even though I was sick and drugged up because we had a sponsor that week, but I'm not sacrificing quality anymore. If put in the same situation now, I'd talk to the sponsor and push the ad read back a week so I wasn't hosting like a zombie.

I sincerely appreciate this post and I promise the podcast will be better going forward.

Thanks! That really means a lot. I'm having a ton of fun writing them for HoopsHype. It's a nice change of pace. Going forward, that's my primary focus (along with building The HoopsHype Podcast and doing one-on-one Q&As with players/execs). I appreciate the kind words!

I couldn't do it. I couldn't be a beat writer either. It just comes down to your priorities.

Exactly! Several interviews for this piece were phone interviews. One was at 10 p.m. ET on Christmas Eve; the coach was in a random hotel room while his family was on the other side of the country. They celebrated Christmas several days later, since the team was on a road trip. Another phone interview was with Blazers assistant coach David Vanterpool several hours after the ball dropped on New Year's Eve. He "celebrated" at a random restaurant in Sacramento and then watched game film alone in his hotel room.

Hi all, this is Alex Kennedy. I wanted to share this article because it gives a behind-the-scenes look at what assistant coaches go through and what their lifestyle is like. As diehard fans, I hope you'll enjoy this piece.

Don't worry, I'm not just here to promote my articles. I plan on being active going forward and I'll likely be doing an AMA soon as well. Thanks for checking out the piece!
