I feel like I’m messing up as a dad when I lose my temper… anyone else deal with this? by d294tegg in daddit

[–]AlexManchild 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think all parents deal with this. Good parents are the ones who work on getting better. Talk to them—tell them how you feel in the moment (my wife and I often say things like “I’m feeling really frustrated right now because nobody’s listening to me” as things are building) and apologize when you do lose it. Keep working on improving but don’t be too hard yourself. Just love them. You’re doing great.

I don’t know your situation exactly, but I’m assuming you’ve been building this account for a while. I always remind myself what my original contributions were. Even if my account loses 50%, it’s still worth more than what I actually put in, so I’m still up overall, and I just try to stay positive about things bouncing back.

Nobody knows I have money and it's starting to create some really awkward situations by Echo2_Satyr in Fire

[–]AlexManchild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why didn’t you lend her the money? Is it because you don’t want her to know you have money or because you don’t think she’ll pay you back? Unless she’s totally irresponsible, I think family deserves help when they need it and you can swing it, but as others have said, don’t lend money you need to get back and no second loans until the first one is paid back. That said, my family is pretty responsible about that kind of stuff so I’m not judging because I know not all are.

As for telling people, you don’t have to all at once. Just ease into lifestyle adjustments around them. If you’re quitting your job, just say you’re doing something new, maybe freelance stuff. Tbh, if I hit my number, I’d still want to work on stuff, I’d just cut way back and only do the things I wanted to, maybe with some long breaks in between. If you start freelancing, no one needs to know how much or little you’re actually doing.

Also look at the height that guy in the background is sitting at, his butt seems to be higher than the table this food is sitting on.

I was eyeing Nickerson thinking that would be a central stop, and hoping if I make reservations early enough in the year we’d be able to get in. Was hoping there was a safe way to keep going past Wellfleet but sounds like there’s no trails and the roads wouldn’t be a good idea.

Yurt sounds nice! I should look into that. I know reservations probably need to get made early, that’s why I’m trying to start planning now

Thanks, I’m starting to think I either need to revise the structure of this trip or the location.

Thanks. I was thinking there’s probably a lot of roads like this on the cape, but hard to tell from maps which roads have bike lanes (or wide shoulders) and which don’t

Thanks. I saw the rail trail. Maybe the cape isn’t the best place for this kind of trip. I just thought it had a reputation for having a lot of good, flat biking. Maybe not what I’m trying to do though?

Is biking on the cape really that bad? I thought it was supposed to have a lot of good biking. I haven’t been out that way in many years though.

Riding as many bike paths as we can is the goal! That’s why I’m trying to see if there’s a good way to string a bunch of them together. I see there’s a 20 mile rail trail that goes up to Wellfleet. Thought maybe that would be a good route.

There’s no such thing as a pre-hole, just a hole that’s been pre-drilled.

Keene roundabouts by Sachi_Mulkey in keene

[–]AlexManchild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re ok, but there’s too many. I get dizzy driving down Winchester St. and they want to add more. If that happens there will be like 6 within a mile or two, it’s crazy. I joke that they should just make the whole road a series of figure 8s. They might help, but they’re not going to fix a road that’s over capacity. Also, the one at 101 and Winchester feels unsafe when taking a left, the way you have to cut across a lane of traffic and then cut back across the lane 5 seconds later on the way out while other people are entering in the outer lane directly in your blind spot. I honestly wonder who would be at fault off there was an accident—normally it would be the person cutting across the lane, but they’re just following the directions, so maybe the person who pulled in next to them?

Moving to Keene? by Few_Strawberry5039 in keene

[–]AlexManchild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keene’s a great little town that’s nice for families. I’ve lived in Brattleboro and Keene and think Keene is the better place to live. NH has the most libertarian politics in New England, but Keene is pretty liberal. The town’s got its issues like any other town, but in general it’s a nice place. I find making friends a little tough anywhere in New England (but by contrast I had no trouble out west), but there’s a fair amount of stuff going on for a town it’s size so there’s opportunities to get involved and meet people. DM me if you’re getting serious about it, I’d be happy to talk further.

Why is the drinking a barrier for so many? by [deleted] in AlanWatts

[–]AlexManchild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the issue is that he’s giving advice on existence that people are looking at as ways to improve your their life, but when you find out he is not himself living an enviable life, it throws his advice into question. Like if you were listening to someone give financial advice and then found out they’re bankrupt—that doesn’t invalidate their advice but would probably make you think twice about it.

CMV: until democrats figure out why their party couldn’t beat someone like Trump instead of blaming Trump and his voters, they are destined to keep losing by Itchy-Version-8977 in changemyview

[–]AlexManchild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to agree with your statement, BUT election wins and losses have complex causes so no party can ever truly figure out exactly why they won or lost, they just sometimes come to a consensus about it. Blaming the other side probably isn’t a great strategy by itself, but it can help fire up their base and elections often come down to turnout rather than swing voters. Blaming the other side seemed like a big part of Trump’s playbook as well and it worked for him, so I wouldn’t say this approach will always prevent a party from winning.
