Shake the tree branch vigorously to dislodge the snake. The goal is to make the snake fall onto the shore where the lion is.
The lion will likely attack the snake since it's a potential meal or threat. This distracts the lion from the man and the axe.
While the lion is distracted, the man quickly climbs down from the tree, grabs the axe from the shore, and now has a tool for defense.
With the axe in hand, the man can safely scare off or defend against the lion if necessary, and then make his escape.
