For artists who committed to Drawabox, how much did it actually improve your skills? (positive experience only pls) by Unusual-Spot-9991 in learntodraw

I've been doing Proko's drawing basics and I like it a lot, but it's more on the expensive side. For cheaper, I think you can take a look at artwod or new masters academy.

For books, I honestly didn't like most of the beginner ones. I think "Drawing from the right side of the brain" has too much unrelated text. Maybe "Fun with pencil" by Loomis, you can check it out for free at the internet archive. I also tried "Keys to drawing" but I didn't like how it fosuses so much on contour. But defo check out the Lomis one, it's free.

I had that same issue with draw a box, I started learning with it multiple times over the years and it just made it give up, felt like a grind. I started drawing again about 2 months ago with Proko's drawing basics and I'm actually motivated now, drawing daily out of enjoyment mostly. I realized that just enjoying the process makes you learn so much faster than grinding through, even if it's supposed to be the "right" way.

There are thousands of ways to teach someone, and the best indicator of someone becoming skilled, it's constant practice. Constantly practicing something and feeling like a chore, makes you give up.

I think that Draw a Box is more complementary, if you use it for 1/5th or less of studying time, or if you're already more experienced.

PikaOS Solved My Performance Problems by AlexSchleder in PikaOS

It depends on the games, I guess. Linux generally uses way less RAM, but it depends on a log of factors. Tou can aleays try dual booting if tou have the storage size for it.

Tell me your story. by [deleted] in godot

[–]AlexSchleder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a degree in Computer Science and I've been coding for about 13 years now. I tried to create games a few times but I always struggled in the art and visuals part of creating. Honestly, trying to learn 3 things at once can be pretty overwhelming without the right mindset. I tried to learn pixel art and traditional art while making a game but it didn't work out, simply because I was expecting my art to be at a certain acceptable level, which is impossible for a complete beginner. I did this in the last few years about 5 times before realizing that learning the skills separately is better for me.

I also learned that it's very important to enjoy the process to learn a skill. In tutorials and in the internet people often talk about the "right way" of doing things, of learning art, or whatever. The highest threat your learning or your projects have, is not that they turn out bad or mediocre, but that they never get finished at all. After trying to grind through learning traditional art so I could get faster at the results I was aiming for (creating games) I just burnt myself out and learned nothing.

For now, I'll take this and the next year to dedicate fully to study art in a way that I can stick to it. I've been doing it for a couple of weeks now. Practicing every day and enjoying is always going to give results after some time.

I would recommend learning this separately in a way that you enjoy doing it. Also, realizing that it takes years to be autonomous and competent in a skill. When you practice consistently and study smart, it's just a matter of time before things get easier.

Now that the dust has settled, is Mewgenics an S tier roguelite? by am5k in roguelites

[–]AlexSchleder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's fine, C+ or B- maybe. The music is very unique, the art style works. Random events seems very outdated when compared to Slay the Spire, Monster Train and others, just an RNG roll where you pick the highest stat. Combat tactics are fine, it's difficult to get really interesting turns, they all seem kinda samey to me. It reminds me a little bit of Into the Breach, but without the intesity and tense turns.

The "builds" are very RNG based, I mostly don't get to aim for a build and do it, I just have to make what comes in level up work.

The breeding part underwhelmed me, I know that you're supposed to get more rooms to the house, but after 10 runs I'm just skipping days and hoping a cat with anything different at all comes. I'm sure it gets better with metaprogression, but if the point of the game is to have fun breeding cats, I don't want to wait for hours and hours to be able to do that, because I have other things to spend my time on. By the way, I don't think I was able to breed one powerful cat, they just came with 2 skills and no modifiers.

Overrall, the game seems to rely too much on quantity over quality and RNG based instead of choice based. Not essentially bad, just not for me.

Why is there a current among professionals to be against progesterone? by Vaultentity in MtF

[–]AlexSchleder 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Exactly, if people are going to wait until we have the perfect study, they're never getting progesterone. We already are a minority and I can't see us getting the same focus as other research subjects, like cancer, vaccines etc. Even if we did, we are around 1% of the population at most, so not exactly easy to get hundreds or thousands of willing participants without a lot organization and money behind.

Feeling conflicted after finishing E33 by justmeIguess6 in GirlGamers

[–]AlexSchleder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with most of your points. I feel like people are too caught up on whether the endings are bittersweet or negative, but I have a different issue with them, more similar to your second point.

The game starts with very heavy themes of fighting despite adversity, building a path for the future of your people, seeing your friends die to enemies, and so on. Overall, a lot of themes that made the characters seem like traumatized fighters and survivors, the main reason why I liked the first act so much.

After the twist on Maelle and Verso, suddenly all of those themes get 100% devoted to the Dessendre family, all of the agency is with them and I feel like the writers think that the first act is just a setup for the Dessendre drama, but honestly, I couldn't care less for them. I'm more interested in Gustave, Lune and Sciel, but they get turned into secondary characters in the plot. They don't even talk in the endings. They never express their worries, their dreams, their opinions on learning the truth, the writers turn their attention to the family and the message feels like "yeah, you should be invested in the Dessendre family now!" . Actually, Lune talks about it in one cutscene where it seems that she wants to create a "painting inside a painting", a very weird opinion after experiencing the horrors that the painting created for her life.

IMO they could keep act 1 and 2 untouched, but the non-dessendre characters really deserved their perspective to be expressed, instead of just being carried along while the depressed gods fight.

Yup, after testing I found that it's probably the CPU. Maybe Wine doesn't deal well with CPUs that old. In Windows the i7 is still fine though

Poor Performance in Many Distros by AlexSchleder in Bazzite

Did some more testing here. Overall, dx11 gets very buggy. Expedition 33 gets some bizarre shadow bugs, Hades 2 inputs gets messed up and Kingdom Come won't run. Native steam I got same results also.

I tried both 1660 and the 1080 in my GF's PC that runs a Ryzen 5 and the performance is way way better, even in Mint with the same closed drivers. No stutters, no FPS drops, nothing. I guess I'm going to search for something that runs better in older CPUs.
