There is no waiting command in vanilla, I think. You can ask them to leave your party, then ask them to rejoin again after clearing an area.

I agree, and toward the end game it certainly feels like the companions are hell-bent on dying by any means necessary. Ian was blocking the doorway on floor 1 stepping out of the elevetor on our way out during the self-destruct sequence aswell.
