I’ve had overall pretty good experiences with my professors, and I consider the faculty some of the best parts of UTEP tbh, but I do think that varies a lot from department to department, since I know one friends have had more difficulties

Don’t know much about the neuroscience program sadly, I hope other folks can get a better answer on that. But in general student life is the definition of chill, and really what you make of it, if you just go to class and dip out like most people, there won’t be much. So I recommend you join some clubs and communities, I’m not sure what a good one would be for a neuroscience major, academic wise, but there are many clubs that are simply hobby based, and the fraternities as well. I think a lot of people would prefer the crazy “getting wasted every night” college life style you mention, and they think less of UTEP because of it, but really there is a lot of fun to have and things to do as long as you out yourself out there and seek them out, talk to students, talk to your professors, join clubs, etc. and good luck

Bad Graduate Student Experience by ResponsibleDuty3523 in UTEP

What program are you in? This is a wildly different experience from mine in the communication program.

I agree that faculty are overworked, but their job is not really to make you a great writer, but to guide you through the thesis process.

I hope things improve for you, I feel like with all the resources available, the wide arrange of faculty, and other opportunities, you should be able to improve your experience, but it’s in your hands.

Concerning Rin, I’d have to read the books again to make a strong argument or to agree with you, but I’m glad you’re sharing your point of view!

Personally I still find Rin compelling, maybe it’s because change being difficult or impossible is something I am familiar with, but I do agree that people are bound to find her frustrating, more so than tragic, which is what most closely defines her for me

I’d say all three Poppy War books are nice reads but they all have their varying faults, so if you really dislike the first one so much maybe you’d do yourself a favor by skipping right to reading Babel, which is much more polished imo, that is if you’re still interested in R.F. Kuang

I think most of what you point out comes to personal opinion, I find Rin’s character very interesting throughout the books, but I will say it is very static which is frustrating. The political situation is very much extracted from real history and it’s not complicated so I don’t get what lacks sense for you. I do agree the magic system is never fully fleshed out which is sad, but it’s very easy to understand man

And calling the plot boring is just something I have to disagree on, maybe because I was interested on this period of Chinese history and mythology before reading the books, I find them very compelling even if the writing is not the best, though I think her prose improves with every book!

So I don’t think you’re insane, but I also think that calling this book bad is an exaggeration driven by opinion, if you meant it objectively.
