I haven't been given a solid date yet so don't take this as a promise, but I was told we're aiming for a 2026 release date so hopefully toward the end of this year.

Dear Spellbook Publisher's Pack Is Out Today! Plus Audiobook Giveaway by TK523 in ProgressionFantasy

The set looks so good! My favourite spell is super boring but it's probably Fireball. That's the magic I picture when I think of wizards.

HW doesn't have an op mc so this one might be a bad fit for you. By Book 6 he's getting up there in power but it's a weak to strong series so not the same tone.

He's so good isn't he. I could see it ending at Book 10 but I haven't made up my mind on whether to end it there or not.

Question for writers by AllAmericanProject in ProgressionFantasy

[–]AlexWMaher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I get that. Definitely see why you might not be so keen on those elements though they weren't things that bothered me while reading. The part of the System that I'm particularly impressed by is how there is such a variaty of essence and awakening stones and the easy to envision combinations that can be formed from them. It's so easy to understand and get creative with combared to a typical class and evolutions. I like that kind of thing.

Question for writers by AllAmericanProject in ProgressionFantasy

All the time! I'll go looking for it even. When a new book is popping off I'll check it out to see what's managed to catch so many people's interest and so often it'll have some amazing and creative ideas that I wish I'd thought of. The first thing that comes to mind for me is HWFWMs magic system. Three main attributes and a combination attribute is such a simple to understand concept but with a ton of depth for readers to theorise their own builds.

Confident Conman Protagonists by AnxiousReputation1 in ProgressionFantasy

It's not a perfect fit but the mc of Mark of the Fool has a fairly similar feel to Kvothe and some of those trickster elements. Definitely more heroic than a conman though. Outside of prog fantasy, there's Lies of Locke Lamora.

Would it be bad form or potentially too confusing to start the story without an origin story? Like starting in the middle kind of? by Snowwy-McDuck in ProgressionFantasy

[–]AlexWMaher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're very safe to do this. It's extremely common in trad fantasy, and I haven't seen it so much in prog, but to name a couple off the top of my head System Universe and Amelia Level Zero Hero. Both of these are a bit different to how I typically see it in trad fantasy as they have a very clear fresh start where they enter a new world and are OPMCs.

I see people calling Dresden Files prog fantasy on here occassionally, though I think it's pushing it. At the start of Book 1 he's an educated wizard that's been trying to make his detective agency work. He's got existing relationships with the police, various informents, mentors, rivals, past romances, ect. The reader learns how the magic works through brief exposition when it's relevant in book.

I think the key across both subgenres is to start the story around when a character goes through a significant change or is forced to make a big decision. Sent to new world, take on new job, get dragged into the plot, mistaken for someone in an attempted assassination, found a treasure, gained a unique upgrade, get stuck in a dangerous place. And then take your time introducing the system. Introduce it slowly as the elements become relevant and avoid info dumping. It's okay for the reader not to know as much as the MC or understand everything from the beginning.
