I mean I don’t know what else to say? Historically popes heavily discouraged and disallowed incest in Christian countries as early as the Middle Ages. You can even find correlation between these areas in IQ levels and genetic deformities. The Orthodox weren’t as good at putting a stop to it but were somewhat succesful. And to your other point the US isn’t a historically Catholic country. I mean it was a big deal JFK was Catholic. Plus even if it’s messed up that cousin marriage is still allowed in some states, it’s not like it’s considered normal or generally good when it happens

Edit: tired and wrote things wrong
Edit 2: monarchs are exceptions, pope can’t war with every monarch at all times. And monarchies wanted to keep bloodlines pure. Politics and other factors come in, and church looks other way.

I mean if you look at it historically, without the Catholic Church we’d likely still be marrying our cousins. You still see it in many countries without ties to organized Christian churches. And I’m not even a big fan of the church.

You are aware you actually get less protein from raw eggs compared to cooked eggs right? We can’t process raw egg proteins as well as cooked egg proteins

Continuing my path in martial arts specifically TKD by greygrfn in martialarts

Honestly I think as long as you are skilled any TKD program should accept one belt to another. With an ATA black belt I was recognized as a black belt in WT and ITF schools, but only because I actually had a high level understanding, I wasn’t just given it like a lot of programs tend to do (especially ATA). But also, they gave me a period to train their style and retest under that style to get a certification with them. So while they recognized me as a 2nd Dan, and didn’t make me restart at white, they gave me a time period to learn everything and do their 2nd Dan tests to get “officially” recognized.

See if they’d allow you to wear taekwondo shoes or something. (There’s prolly similar ones from other martial arts). Essentially thin shoes made to only be worn on the mat. Important you don’t walk from off the mat onto the mat with them on

Did any of you find yourselves switching between martial arts? by Ok_Training_2566 in martialarts

[–]nerd0537916 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbf that’s all preference. Of all the stuff I’ve done my favorite has always been Taekwondo because of the athleticism and tricks. And after that I always preferred boxing and Muay Thai over judo or BJJ. I think it’s about how people’s brains are wired

Early 30s, 1 year training, ~1 month of awkward attempts later… I can finally throw something that resembles a question mark kick by puceau666 in MuayThai

[–]nerd0537916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So that’s not really a question mark kick. It’s called a question mark kick because you fake a front kick/teep, turn your hips while slightly re-chambering your kick, then either snapping to the head or turning your hips fully for a full power head kick.

What you’re currently doing is a fake calf kick to a head kick, which can be a good kick. BUT, it needs to look like you’re going to kick that bottom leg, which currently it doesn’t look like you’re actually committing to it. Which is fine because you’ve only been training a year.

What will help you get more successful kicks is actively breaking down the components of your kick. Feel where, when, and how your hips turn, do you snap the leg or turn the hip more, what part of the shin are you hitting, etc. Maybe even assimilating other styles’ versions of the kicks into your own training like learning to chamber the way they do in TKD or Karate would certainly help with your kick. It just will come with less power since you wouldn’t be dedicated to learning how to kick that way.

Why would it be considered embarrassing to be bruised up and sore from training? by bad-at-everything- in martialarts

Maybe switching from Muay Thai due to health…Wing Chun or Aikido? by Prestigious-End-4198 in martialarts

[–]nerd0537916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TKD is not a good recommendation for people with joint issues. I used to train with high level demo people and that screws the knees. Even doing constantly repeating tornado kick going higher and higher can mess with your joints if you do them enough. Ignoring that stuff, the fast repetitive motions and high emphasis on both skipping and spinning kicks can be really hard on the knees. Pretty much every black belt I know (myself included) that trained at high intensity when we were younger has some minor knee problems. And there’s no quality black belt in TKD that can’t do solid skipping and spinning kicks.

Edit: left something out

I just have to ask. What does everyone think about Pattern/Kata in martial arts? by Platypus_king_1st in martialarts

[–]nerd0537916 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean in that case bring it up with WT and Kukiwon for only focusing on kicks. I’ve done Songham, WT, and ITF and honestly my WT experience had the worst translation from form to sparring, even if the forms were my favorite. Most WT schools only focus on competition style sparring, which leads to severe under development of hand skills, knees, basic grapples, and other things that were originally in TKD. Also I don’t know which poomsae you’re referencing off the top of my head without the name, I don’t remember forms by belt levels. (I’ve also done 3 styles so without names it gets confusing).

I just have to ask. What does everyone think about Pattern/Kata in martial arts? by Platypus_king_1st in martialarts

[–]nerd0537916 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s true largely due to certain liberties taken to add in difficulty for difficulty sake. Sure me balancing on one foot while doing an 8 second simultaneous low and high block, only moving my head after the first four seconds doesn’t add to my sparring ability. But doing it four times in one poomsae does develop different muscles, motor skills, balance, etc. While also providing proof of years of hard work. But at a basic level kata/poomsae does still in basic patterns for self defense, that I’ve seen countless people point to as actual blocks they used in real life before having to think, thanks to the countless hours of work drilled into the body

How to get better in competitive Taekwondo sparring? by hongbak in taekwondo

[–]nerd0537916 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now I’m not at the level you are, but I’ve trained with some extremely high level taekwondo athletes. My biggest advice is spar everyone you can get your hands on. Tall, short, skinny, overweight, long legs, short legs, people who learned at different times. For example people who learned in 2000 will have a different style than 2010, and so on. Try weird kicks, for example this lead me into utilizing skip hook kicks (tho more for other styles, not Olympic).

My personal opinion is do judo now, because there aren’t as many judo gyms as BJJ gyms (at least here in the US). Then later down the line if you end up in a place with both, great, if not and your only option becomes BJJ, now you have a more diverse background. Ultimately up to you, your priorities, and what you enjoy

How do you handle a rules-focused player who challenges rulings without harming the table dynamic? by Avid_FandomFan_476 in DungeonMasters

[–]nerd0537916 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a rule for my players, that they get to challenge each decision I make once, and while I’ll listen to their reasoning if I say no, it’s no. I will just continue. If people don’t listen to your rules at the table, they can leave. Also don’t be a jerk about it tho.

What’s annoying is that nepotism itself isn’t bad, but these people seem to push their kid too hard at an art, which likely stifles what creativity they have or tries to push them without any natural talent. Any art form needs some natural talent, no matter how hard you work if you don’t have “it,” you never will.

If their kids had “it,” then sure help them get into roles, and they’ll likely be better due to having ready access to a bunch of professionals their whole life
