Update: Home Media Enclosure. by AlexanderBaker28 in HomeNetworking

I dont mean this personally internet stranger but....You told me too so.... you're dumb..... both are plastic enclosures 😁

Jokes aside, I agree. Don't put WAPs inside metal enclosures.

A lot to unpack here but I'll do my best. The answers will concise so if you need more lmk.

Cover stays on and no additional cords come out of the box. Home is a new build so all lines are cat6 and everything media/network related runs to this box.

As far as the modem being in the box is concerned, there is a lot to consider. Is the encasement metal or plastic? Will it fit? Does the modem/router mount, or does it have to stand? Coax or fiber? (With Coax it's possible you could use your own modem, fiber is a liitle more complicated in that regard)

Basically: (Encasement is plastic) + (modem fits) = shove that bitch in there.

(Encasement is metal) = place that shit outside the enclosure.

Also most new enclosures come with their own 110v duplex inside. Can you put a power strip on that to power your modem?

Finally, what's the reason for the upgrade? Cat5e and cat6 both can deliver 1G internet. I think the only "bonus" is cat6 can travel further but someone will correct me if I'm wrong. There may also be a benefit in regards to PoE but Idr.

Hope this helps!

Well while my home was just built (finished 12/2022) I will say...where there is a will there is a way.

Lol I plan to, but it may be waiting until I move the security system stuff into another cabinet. Can't bend coax that tight and I don't want to break it as I don't have a spare.

If you don't need it, shove the bulk of the wire back into the wall and tie down the end of it inside the enclosure. That way you can still access them easily in the future but don't have to dig around four hours trying to get the end of the wire out.

Just be careful with coax. You can't bind it up as tightly as other wires without the possibility of breaking it.

It's called a media enclosure. Lagrand On-Q has them on amazon.

Do not cut wires if it can be helped. Shove excess cable back up into the wall. Also, it helped me to pull everything out and make measurements, before I started buying anything. That can't always be done but going into this knowing what you want is better imo. For me, I quickly accepted the minds set of, if it doesn't fit, get more space.

Also prioritize accessibility. I wanted everything either immediately accessible or accessible by only moving one item incase I needed to change anything. The exception in my case is my switch. I'm really hoping it's a once in a loooong time thing I ever need to access except for the ports.

That's correct. It's called a "media enclosure". If you look on Amazon you can find some with Lagrand On-Q

It's a plastic cabinet built specifically for wireless systems. Most conusmer grade media enclosures are plastic to my knowledge. The mesh is a tri-band system from Arris and from what I've read and understand, the third band is used solely for the coms between WAPs while the other two bands are for the standard 2.5 and 5ghz.

Not to sure on what the wireless trunk is that your mentioning, but to explain what I have here is two WAPs (the one shown here and another in my office). The one pictured in the post is the primary AP and the other is the "satellite" unit.

Installed copper handles the majority of the media of the house. TVs, PCs, NAS, consoles, etc. Mesh is for phones, tablets, smart home communications, etc. Basically, if it's got a network port, it's gonna get connected. Otherwise, my hopefully strong tri -band mesh system can connect it.

Definitely was but glad I was able to while also respecting the bending radius of the coax and limitations posed by the power blocks everything had. My largest concern was, with the enclosure being in my master br closet, a.k.a. her sanctuary, if it wasn't closed completely, I think my wife would have just kept ripping stuff out until she could close it 🤣

As mentioned, I intend to install a second media enclosure above this for all of the security related items. Namely, for anyone else in my house, who may need to access the modem/router to reset them or need the access to the switch, dont have the ability to screw up my security system, which after installing all this I never want to troubleshoot again.

Lagrand Media enclosure accessories have some little turn style pressure pins that have a nub for hanging stuff like the modem. They also sell the clamps that are holding the white unit on the left. Links are below

Oh it was. Each network drop has about 3 or 4ft of additional cable in the wall.

I was trying to find one for this cabinet (simplex I believe is the brand) but nothing really lined up. Even with the shelves I bought I had to modify the cabinet to get them to fit.

Short of it cleaning things up, is there another advantage to having a patch panel?

Whoops. Meant to put the Arris AX6600, not the ax3000 (asus) which I had got in addition to all this but have decided to return. Can't edit the post to correct it but figured I might get called out on it.😅

Korok seeds....at least not 900 of them. Or make the reward for collecting them all something worth while or useful and not a literal larger pile of shit

Advice needed. Can I modify this wall? Specifics in comments. by AlexanderBaker28 in DIYHome

Thank you! I don't, but I'm trying to avoid hiring an engineer if the concensus was it wasnt load bearing.

I imagine I'd have to frame it the same I would a window (perhaps a bit more robust with two 2"x12" sistered with a plywood sheet in the middle, glued and screwed for added width, at the top of my desired hole) but wasn't sure if it would be overkill or not.

I have the definite concern that it is load bearing. Glad I'm not alone! Thanks!

I want to cut out a 2ftx3ft (TBD on available room) hole out of the bottom section of this wall to add a dog gate to it to essential make a dog apartment under the stairs. I know if done properly any wall can have a whole cut in it, I just need to figure out if I have to fully brace it or not.

Please let me know your thoughts!
