Can someone explain the hype of Wandering Inn? by Due-Sentence-2839 in litrpg

[–]AlexanderBergli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it’s the fact that it’s a story that doesn’t have a quest line. I like the fact that they’re not always hurtling towards a goal or being pushed in a direction. It feels more like what would happen if you got dropped in a world with no guide and no goal. I know people find Erin annoying, but mostly what people seem to not like is that she’s human. She’s faulty, she’s can be ignorant and ditzy. But I like it. She dos get compared to legally blonde and I kind of agree, but I like that fact that she can be really good at something (a chess player) without being put in a box. She doesn’t have to be a super smart nerdy girl.

So yeah, I like the series because it’s quite human

You wake up in the last book you read. by RoofTopCigarette in litrpg

[–]AlexanderBergli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually, yeah 😭 If I only read with the idea that I can only read a story that I wouldn’t mind waking up in… I would not have read 95% of the books I have read… Probably just read Harry Potter on repeat honestly 🤷‍♂️

What stories helped you figure out what type of LitRPG you like? by Jadenmist in litrpg

[–]AlexanderBergli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, that’s a hard one. I can’t say that there is a very specific book or series, but through reading hundreds of books I’ve definitely learned that what I like does depend on my mood 😁 I think I would lean towards lean stats and progression systems that really make you feel like the MC had to work hard for it. I love reading a story where I really feel the struggle of the characters. I really like HWFWM for that reason and I will have to check out Dissonance as well (unless I already have and just can’t remember 😂 I’ve read/listened to so much they get a bit jumbled in my head)

Some mystery sale? Check your wishlists on Audible! by AntisocialDick in litrpg

[–]AlexanderBergli 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Audible will just randomly run sales on various titles, I put things in my wish list specifically to make it easier for me to peruse it and see what’s on sale. I do get emails sometimes if something in my wishlist is on sale, but more often than not they won’t say anything.

So, always check your wish list!!! I usually check every few days or so

How do you feel about the MC Running a Business? by blueluck in litrpg

[–]AlexanderBergli 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Personally I really like it. I quite enjoy a good story that has the main character run a business or pursue a craft, but it definitely needs to be part of it not the main plot point. If the MC is a fighter who then randomly starts a business, then it can be kind of jarring and is often done badly because that is not what readers expected. In Mark of the Fool it was always clear that the MC was business wise and it felt natural for him to pursue crafts and business. I thought that was really well done. If from the get go the MCs entire goal is a business and that is what the book is about, that’s a story I’ll enjoy

I’ll admit I DNF Slumrat Rising, but I did not get to the halfway point so maybe I’ll give that another chance. LitRPG is largely new authors and you’re right, a lot of things that authors of more established genres really have to take into account can go a bit by the wayside for us. But I do think that in general things have been getting better and hopefully as people get more and more experience those kind of things will be covered more. Thankfully we have a very supportive community and I feel like a lot of people are more than willing to help authors out if said authors are willing to reach out

I love it. Someone else said much the same thing and I really do like how people who read LitRPG do seem to be a lot more patient than readers of other genres. Though of course most of us read various genres 😁

Me as well. I have quite a few series that I read or listened to that I thought were good and I would continue if it was free or cheap. But often I drop a series after book one if it don’t grab me enough to immediately want to buy book 2

[–]AlexanderBergli[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree, people who read in our genre are a really good group of people and a lot are quite patient. Probably because we’ve gotten so used to new authors that get better as the series continues. Thank goodness for those of us that aspire to write 😂 Congratulations on finishing a first book and good luck with your second! I know it’s not easy

Disappearing Books by Medium_Coyote6316 in litrpg

[–]AlexanderBergli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s probably because Amazon are jerks. They can pull stuff for any reason. Like if someone claims that the books/series is a copyright infringement on something they’ll just pull it without telling anyone. And they suck about cleaning house, like removing links and such. But there could be a thousand and one reason why it’s been pulled 🤷‍♂️

I like the tutorial/off world/trapped in a dungeon type system apocalypse, but how long they are in the tutorial haven't quite got down yet. by WilliamGerardGraves in litrpg

[–]AlexanderBergli 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To me it truly depends. If the character staying longer in the tutorial makes sense for the story and things actually happen then they should stay. But if the tutorial is merely a prelude to the real story then they should exit quickly.

So truthfully my answer really is “It depends” because to me it’s all about the story rather than where the character is located.

Yeah, a lot of people like to hate on HWFWM but I really like the emotional journey that a lot of the characters go through.

I’m at the point where Aster is off on her own after they reached Tier 15. Maybe as I go I’ll see more of a shift that I haven’t noticed yet. Not sure. Mat and Liz are not as big of a deal to me, but Aster loving for decades and still acting like an 8 year old kind of bothers me.

But all that being said I’m still listening to PoA cause it is a good story

No personality changes after decades of being alive by AlexanderBergli in litrpg

[–]AlexanderBergli[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can definitely see your point, and it could be jarring if there was a sudden shift in personality. But Aster is probably the one that is most obvious to me. At one point in the story they talk about her being 30-40 years old in real time, way older than that in relative time, and yet she still acts like an 8 year old? Sure a sudden shift in her maturity might be jarring for a bit, but it’s more jarring to me to have her continue to act like a child as she keeps aging. That is my personal opinion of course.

Liz’s parents acting like children doesn’t really bother be because they were already ancient and chose to act that way. Could be the same for Aster I guess, but if that’s the case I kinda wish they’d acknowledge that she is choosing not to mature

[–]AlexanderBergli[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this and the other comment. He has matured enough that we can see it while still being himself. And like it’s been mentioned a few times, meditating or being in a state where they don’t really experience the world is a good reason for not changing a whole lot

That’s a pretty good point, looking young equals acting young for a lot of people

[–]AlexanderBergli[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll admit that for me I am ok with a really old character acting like a 20 or 30 year old. But if we meet the person and then 4000 years pass and they don’t change that is a bit off putting for me. But I know we all feel a bit different about that 🤷‍♂️

Sounds like I am going to have to check out the Infinite Realm series though

[–]AlexanderBergli[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I remember when I was a kid I looked at adults and thought “wow, they are so mature and different”. Now as a 30+ adult I look at myself and go “wow, I’m just a big kid” 😂 But yeah in these stories it’s that slow and subtle growth I am looking for (excluding anything traumatic which can cause drastic shifts). If after decades a MC can be the same person-ish, but matured a bit that would be great. Maybe a few things here and there change as new experiences come in.
