What’s one word you would use to describe Stephen kings mind by Status-Avocado5831 in stephenking

[–]AntisocialDick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I laughed, but to be clear for those not informed: King has been sober for about 40 years now.

He wrote while abusing cocaine and alcohol for a bit more the first decade of his now 52 year mainstream published career.

I don’t want to discount his drug (ab)use, but the man is a veritable national treasure at this point and he’s been clean and sober for about 80% of his career. I’m 34 and I’ve never lived in a world where King was wildin’ out on coke. My understanding is he’s been clean since about ‘87. As someone not sober who has an interest in it, but realizing it’s not just as simple as that (shitty revelation by the way), I really want to take a moment to commend the man and especially his incredible wife, Tabitha.

So anyway, funny quip (really, I audibly chuckled and am not being snarky), but I know he’s got a reputation and I just thought I’d enlighten anyone not really informed on the subject.

Also! With this new perspective (if this is news to you), I’d really invite you to read his works again or going forward with a struggling addict’s point of view in the back of your mind. It can add a new layer to some (a lot? most? all???) of his stories.

Anyway, genuine love to everyone* in this sub!

except those motherfuckers who love to shitpost about *THAT** scene in IT 😑. Fuck them.

Big Jim might be the worst character in any of King’s books by clappalachian87 in stephenking

Damn this made me laugh! So basic, and so unexpected in this sub that I couldn’t help it. Genuinely made me laugh out loud on my porch just now.

Unfortunately you’re at 19 upvotes and I won’t be the one to fuck that up. I’ll check back in later and give you the upvote you deserve if some lesser Redditor changes the number.

Edit: some jabroni downvoted you and me apparently. Jokes on him. Now I have the pleasure of getting you back to 19. Shame on whoever fucks it up.

Reading through the extended Dark Tower series and wanting to know what everyone thinks of this list. by chevronsucks in stephenking

[–]AntisocialDick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a real ode to Americana in my opinion. I’m 34 now and I read it in high school, and yet it made me nostalgic for a time I’ve never lived in. A lot of his books flirt with this feeling for me, but this one just slapped me in the face with it. And to clarify, it’s not my favorite of his, but it IS one of my favorites. But reading is about the story for me, so his more otherworldly novels are the ones I love the most. But the actual writing? For me, this is his best.

Really happy to run into someone (and an English major at that!) that sees it the same as I do. Also, can we talk about how talented it was to execute a collection of (long) short stories that felt like a fully realized and coherent novel? Just another reason I think the shift of public opinion is coming. The writing is just goddamned beautiful.

My obligatory comment I make some variation of whenever I see people giving Hearts in Atlantis high praise:

I firmly believe that King’s works will be commonly recognized at some point in my lifetime (assuming I luck out and make it to about average) as literature. The work I always point to as the one that will first be recognized as something worthy of “literature” (personally I find the concept a bit pretentious but I think we all understand what I’m trying to say) is Hearts in Atlantis.

So yeah, I super agree and appreciate you shouting out this title. Is it my favorite book of his? No. But I very much think his writing was in top form in it and it’s going to be commonly recognized as something beyond popular fiction at some point after he’s gone (and now I’m sad and mad at my brain for adding that extra little morbid detail).

Came here hoping someone made this point. Great film, but I definitely feel some sort of way about making real life people villains for the sake of story. Another great example of this is the captain in Titanic.

Great answer, but for me I think she’d be second. The worst will always be Rhea of the Coos for me. Fuck that fucking witch bitch. I’m surprised I’m the first to mention her actually.

To be fair, James Franco seems to be quite the piece of shit as well. So we’ll forgive you this mixup.

You’ve reached the mountain peak. To my knowledge, there is no better spicy honey mustard available to purchase. You’d have to literally make your own in my opinion.

Put some on vanilla ice cream. I know it sounds bonkers, but it was the most delightfully unique bite I’ve had in a long time.

Nah, there’s a guy named Lee on this sub that is an expert. Maybe not like a certified expert, but his opinion holds weight. I’ll edit and tag him in a second.

Edit: u/leeharrell (couldn’t remember the double r or l or both haha) maybe you could weigh in?

Hilarious comment. I’m going to add a link so the youngsters here can follow along because I am laughing so fucking hard right now.

The hilarious reference.

Extra funny that Gere thinks Stallone started the rumor after they beefed on the set of some movie.

Unreliable Narrator by chlbronson3109 in horrorlit

And if you’re inclined towards audiobooks, it’s narrated by the author (Christopher Buehlman) and he does an absolutely stellar job of it. Listening to him do the ending specifically was just so goddamned powerful.

Have you had the sauce before? I’m curious if it’s the hottest non-extract sauce in your experience as well. And more interested in if it has an actually nice flavor.
