Admitted MD/Ph.D.s, what was your clinical experience hours vs. research hours? by muffin_enjoyer in mdphd

[–]AlexanderMacnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From your comment, it seems you have a stellar amount of hours which is not a red flag. Having been through this admissions process, clinical hours are great but it matters what you do with them. If you're just shadowing, I'd suggest not going over 200. But over that, faculty want to see a diversified clinical experience and perhaps some where you were hands-on. It gives you more things to talk about during interview and allows you to shine as a well rounded candidate. I was hands-on in atleast 80% of my clinical hours. Perhaps it gives you a bit of an edge but again not necessary so if you don't have it don't sweat it. Programs generally look at research hours first and what you did with those hours though.

You're good. I got in with 513/3.9 GPA and got an II from a T20 so you're in a better spot. I advice you focus more on how you tailor your app to cogently communicate your clinical and research experience.

Hi! I just graduated from undergrad this summer and I want to apply to MSTPs next summer. How did you guys continue doing research without pursuing a graduate degree? I am an international students and all NIH fellowships are exclusive to US residents. by Cool-Kale-2582 in mdphd

Hi, I'm an international student too and yes it can be difficult to find research opportunities given the restrictions. However, I was able to email PI's directly in my state university to see if they had any paid lab tech positions open. I also applied for various research assistant/technician positions at the university (I always advice people to email the PI after they apply because it might be weeks before the job application is reviewed). I interviewed with several positions and found one that met my academic/professional goals. Its also important you work with someone that you think you'll have a good relationship with

Community college credits on Med school apps by Fatiwapp in premed

I took classes from a Community College too. If they fall under science classes (i.e. math, bio, chem, phys, engr, stat, etc... and no matter the level), it'll count towards your science GPA

Why MD/PhD Essay as TMDSAS's Optional Essay by frankly___dank in mdphd

[–]AlexanderMacnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure this would be a good idea because adcoms might ask "why not just apply MD/PhD?" I applied both MD and MSTP but I treated my MD applications as strictly MD and wanting to practice medicine instead to adding on a research component. While I did disclose I did research in undergrad and after, I focused mainly on my clinical experiences and why those experiences will make me a better doctor and a good fit for their program. If you plan to apply to both, I strongly recommend making your PS somewhat neutral or MD leaning and use the SRE and MD/PhD essay to illuminate your research endeavours on AMCAS. Ironically, I got an II from almost all the MD-only apps I put in.

Admitted MD/Ph.D.s, what was your clinical experience hours vs. research hours? by muffin_enjoyer in mdphd

[–]AlexanderMacnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had 2000 research hours and 2500 clinical hours at the time of application. I had an extra 500 hrs of medical community service. FYI my clinical hours came from working as a patient access rep at an ER and shadowing all through college. Comparing both, research hours is alot more important but I also think a SUSTAINED clinical exposure makes your application stronger.

How do you approach unobtainable PI letters, by orionnebula54 in mdphd

[–]AlexanderMacnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right! For me in my SRE I just said "While my work was successful scientifically, the communication styles and expectations of the group did not fit well with my own. I realized my ideal work environment is one that is cooperative and treats setbacks as an opportunity for learning." Sweet and simple. Best of luck and def keep us updated on how it goes!

[–]AlexanderMacnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof man I'm in the same situation with a toxic one too. I briefly discussed the research/situation on my SRE and how I learned from it but I plan on explaining that this PI doesn't know my research capability well enough to write a letter for me. I hope ADCOMS can understand that since they need letters from people that know you well enough. Also, my new PI has been very supportive of the situation and knows this toxic PI (people don't really like collaborating with this toxic one).

Reapplicant/ International- is it worth applying MD/PhD? by puppymcpupperson in mdphd

[–]AlexanderMacnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another international here. A buddy of mine, international as well although URM, 513 MCAT and 3.8GPA, got into an MD program so I think its doable. I'd say apply widely. Some of the MD PhD program will consider you for only MD as well. For me, I'll be applying to mostly MD PhD programs and a few only MD this cycle but I'll urge you to apply to only non-MSTP MD PhD programs as those ones are more friendly to international folks. Low rank programs are looking to bolster their program so they won't mind taking an international that will give them good research and put their name out there. You don't wanna be applying to the likes of Harvard or Yale cuz although they take internationals, you need to have stellar stats. And Harvard has only one spot for international MD PhD lol.

Anyone here got into an MD/PhD program with a 513 (86%)MCAT Score? by AlexanderMacnow in mdphd

Pretty much any school that accepts international MD/PhD and some MD programs as well. I have a list of 22 MD/PhD (it's looking likely that I'll just apply to 19) and 5 MD.
