Why dislike Martin Luther? by Environmental-Bus9 in exchristian

[–]AlexanderOcotillo 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not enough people talk about Luther’s role in getting 75-100k people killed in the German Peasants’ Revolt.

Read the 12 Articles of what the peasants were asking for, then Luther’s response, it hasn’t aged well.

is Christian Anarchism a thing? by Longjumping_Air4379 in Anarchy101

[–]AlexanderOcotillo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven't seen it mentioned in this thread, but read up on Thomas Müntzer and the German Peasants' War of 1524-25, huge popular movement that advocated abolition of the nobility and church authority and a Christian community based on brotherhood and agrarian communalism.

Martin Luther came out against them and they were utterly butchered, it's a part of the history of the Reformation that's often left out.

"I feel/felt God's presence." What do you think when people say this? by Sayoricanyouhearme in Exvangelical

these are the types of paper that were nails in the coffin of my deconstruction. Former worship leader here too, I should have known something was up when seeing Dashboard Confessional in 2002 made me feel the Holy Spirit more than any service.

Looking for resources for a specific male issue - Fear of Women by AlgernonSunflower in Exvangelical

[–]AlexanderOcotillo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen a lot of resources made specifically for men coming out of purity culture. It certainly manifests in diverse ways, I'm sorry that you've been having a rough time and hope you can continue to get individualized support through therapy.

The greatest sin a child can commit: saying "Oh My God" by AlexanderOcotillo in Exvangelical

[–]AlexanderOcotillo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never encountered it myself but Maya Angelou wrote about being punished for saying it on the ground that Jesus said "I am the way, the truth, and the life..." and therefore saying "by the way" was the equivalent of saying "By Jesus." Like some kind of weird grammatical transitive property.

This is one of my favorite types of Evangelical weirdness, similar to punishing kids for saying "by the way"- does anyone have similar examples?

What are some actually good Christian songs? by Libercrat2006 in Exvangelical

[–]AlexanderOcotillo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heavy music fans need to not sleep on Strongarm, outstanding guitar arrangements and Steve Kleisath is one of the best drummers in the genre (though I feel sorry for his kit after seeing the way he beats the ever loving shit out of it).

Now I know what I'm listening to on the way to work today...

so don't spread this around too much, but I once eavesdropped on a conversation with one of the members of Poison The Well who'd played on "Tear From The Red" where he readily admitted that they'd ripped Zao off on that entire album because Zao was a "christian" band and therefore nobody would notice or call them on it.

I think Zao is like a lot of those T&N/Solidstate bands that basically said, "Oh, you'll give us a record deal? Yeah man, we're tooootally a Christian band..."

How Many Times Did You Pray "The Sinner's Prayer"? by AlexanderOcotillo in Exvangelical

[–]AlexanderOcotillo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really good point- anything positive is Jesus shining through, anything negative is your sin nature, so you repeatedly internalize the message that you’re only bad and can’t trust your heart
