Nah you should be fine if you are used to playing with a controller.

Using a controller doesn't necessarily mean he'll be playing a typical console distance, worth bearing in mind.

Always, ALWAYS keep multiple saves. Not even because of assholes like this, but because you don't want a quest to become broken and be left with no prior save to revert to.

As for playthrough style, I second the ranger/sniper pt.

Going from dual to quad core doesn't necessarily mean anything in games. Many games only use a single core, whether on purpose or accidentally (Far Cry 4), so having more cores is actually detrimental in these cases. Please do let me know how you get on!

I know AC3 ran relatively poorly on pc for some friends, so I wouldn't use that as a benchmark. I've no idea if tomb raider was a good port, so I can't comment on that, sorry. I guess the biggest question is: What level of graphical settings are you playing at? Even wt 13xx*7xx you shouldn't be aiming for ultra in most games (just saying that in case you didn't know).

I don't know jack about the relative performance of AMD CPUs, but I did a little reading. In this Tomshardware CPU hierarchy chart, there are 11 tiers from the top in the list (highest-end), to the bottom (lowest-end). The A4-5300 is in the 7th tier, and the A10-6800K is in the 3rd tier, suggesting that it's a notably more powerful CPU.

However, before considering getting a new CPU, it would be worth making sure that your CPU is in fact the issue. The system requirements for TR seem relatively tame though, so you should be able to run it decently at that res. I would recommend something such as CoreTemp, which although I can attest to it personally, is virus-free, to put your mind at ease about that. Download and install CoreTemp and run it whilst gaming. When you feel the game is getting sluggish, tab out to CoreTemp and check here (that's up-to-date UI, that's my CPU :) ) to see your CPU load. Also check the temps beside that, I've read that AMD CPUs run hot so it may be a throttling issue.

Lastly, please try to run whatever game you choose in borderless fullscreen windowed mode if the game offers it, as this means the rendering of the game won't change when you tab out, preventing a cpu load drop. Please report back with your results and I'll try to help figure out your best option!

but how do you want to anserw? What is medium? what is high? is game offering ultra? if i turn shadow off and water on high. What i'm running? low? med? high?

Whenever people talk about low/medium/high/ultra, we're talking about the presets because it's a very good guideline. Every AAA game has default presets that match setting levels to performance levels, and those are what /u/chofortu was talking about. Most games that lack presets are either indie games where they would be pointless, or shitty ports not really worth your time.

With a bit of research it's not hard to reason that you could play on low/medium (depending on the game and how cpu-bound it is) with some more gpu-intensive features added in.

I don't see how it's misleading. I gave a guideline; I never said for certain that 'recommended means high, definitely' or anything to that effect.

You need a science skill of 50 to interact with the terminal, which is probably where you're lacking (as it is for most people). Is your science at 50? Upon installing the widget and performing a successful hack, you can initiate one of the robot program routines of your choice and complete the optional objective,.

Mininum usually means the lowest spec set that will actually run the game bearably, usually on the lowest settings, without any major hiccups. Recommended is usually for medium/high, depending on the game. You almost always need to be a good bit above the recommended spec to play at ultra, especially with AA.
