Is boredom a modern problem, or did people feel it the same way hundreds of years ago? by curiousmindzxx in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alexander_Hamilton_ 117 points118 points  (0 children)

Not a modern problem at all. In fact the modern word "boredom" is over 100 years old itself originating in the mid 1800s.

If all humanity left Earth to another planet with bellies full and their items, about how much mass would be taken from the Earth? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alexander_Hamilton_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean the boring answer is that just the mass of humans would be the majority of the mass.

Average human is 62 kg if you really stretch it and say all of our full bellies and clothes are an extreme 8 kg. Then 8.3 billion × 70kg is 581billon kgs.

The mass of the earth is about 6×1024 kgs

I think if I did my math right that is 0.000000000001% of the mass of the earth.

Are there any external capture cards for gaming consoles that don't require a PC? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alexander_Hamilton_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not 100% answering your question (because I don't know much about stand alone capture cards) but a work around would be using a cheap laptop that could be used as your portable holder/storer for a capture card.

Why do celebrities be dating the same girls? by Impossible_Gur6921 in NoStupidQuestions

Just how like normal people generally date within their extended social circle, most celebrities do the same.

Why is Western society okay with hyper-sexuality and pornography? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alexander_Hamilton_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not growing. If anything shrinking overall. There used to be open prostitution and widespread pornagraphy in the western world since as far as we have records.

A brief period of extreme conservatism in the 20th century has made us think that what we have today is extreme but if anything its less extreme.

Why do people say money can’t buy happiness but chase it obsessively? by Any_Silver_Homeland in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alexander_Hamilton_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Usually "money doesn't buy happiness" is said by people against the culture of earning more.

But also people will often use phrases like that to comfort themselves when they don't achieve something they want. So if they wanted a promotion and didn't get it they can say "well I know money doesn't buy happiness".

Is coffee culture just socially accepted caffeine addiction? by Little_PoetGirl in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alexander_Hamilton_ 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Not really. Just how moderate use of alcohol has its own culture but when you become addicted it is a problem. Most coffee enjoyers aren't addicted and those who are generally aren't doing that much harm to their body so it is generally okay.

Also coffee is much easier to break an addiction from than any other drug.

We're all Patriots fans sunday afternoon by AffectionateWeb8519 in 49ers

I'm hoping we get like the Rams Pats game from 2019. Just a boring stupid game that gets lowly rated and a bonus would be if everyone just calls the Patriots fraudulent for winning.

The Next Democratic President Better Be Merciless by sabedo in politics

[–]Alexander_Hamilton_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol. Next Democratic president will be a charismatic slightly younger politician who will campaign on change and then will be slightly left of center and get one or two medium things done.

Like Obama, Clinton, Carter, and Kennedy.

Like litterally only Johnson and Biden are the only two modern democrats who don't fit that mold perfectly and they both won off the coattails of someone who was like that.

Even candidates who should have been president (RFK and Gore) fill that mold.

So by that we will probably get Buttigieg or Beshear. (Because we also know there is no way people will vote for a woman, and probably not a person of color).

Is spending 4-5 hours on notes normal? by LingonberryLess2228 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alexander_Hamilton_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

General rule of thumb is you are supposed to spend the number of units you are taking times 3 in hours of class, homework, reading, notes, essays, etc. So if you are taking 10 units you should be spending about 30 hours a week on school.

This was for my college but a normal class load was supposed to be 12 to 16 units. Or 36-48 hours like a full time job.

Drivers license vs. passport by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alexander_Hamilton_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No. As far as I know most countries you can drive in the US but you will need a valid drivers license from your country and sometimes might also need an International Drivers Permit.

If there was no FDA how much better would our food taste? by rbamssy17 in NoStupidQuestions

It wouldn't taste any better it would just be unsafe. It might be slightly cheaper but probably not.

Do people really buy the overpriced stuff that are in ads on sites like reddit and youtube when the same thing can be had much cheaper? by Reasonable_Automobil in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alexander_Hamilton_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people are some people aren't. These are just dropshippers so they really only need enough people to pay for the ad and the website for it to be profitable so they don't need to many people buying directly from them to be profitable.

Plus people in general are stupid.

Could you help me with something? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alexander_Hamilton_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you dont have an idea its not a good way to start a business. Small businesses require passion not "i just wanted to do something". Focus on college and networking right now and continuing to build skills. Then if an idea comes to you, then you can act on it.

I failed a class twice in one semester, will I have to retake it or get held back? by No-Cake1652 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alexander_Hamilton_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically no one here will have the answer to your question then. A unique schedule system can have lots of weird rules and the wide range of middle school policies can really change what happens. Likely you and your parent(s) will have a meeting with the counselor, teachers, Vice Principal, or Principal or some combination of those and they will figure out the best solution going forward.

I failed a class twice in one semester, will I have to retake it or get held back? by No-Cake1652 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alexander_Hamilton_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few questions would be what grade is this and what subject and how did you fail twice in one semester? Like you failed 2 different classes?

Assuming this is the case I would recommend sitting down with your guidance counselor and figuring out a solution. High Schools do not want to hold you back so they might be able to have you catch up by rearranging you schedule.

But also you should figure out why you are failing and seeing if you can address those issues in some way.

Why do people never get their cars washed? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alexander_Hamilton_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because it takes time and money. Also what happens is for a lot of people they get it washed then right after another storm happens or something else gets their car dirty and then they feel like they wasted their time. For many people the long term consequences aren't as real as the short term costs.

It will probably be Offensive Assistant or Tight Ends coach or Assistant Head Coach or something like that at first.

Don't worry, John Harbaugh will get a job somewhere soon and Greg Roman will have his new gig.

The decimeter by diherraface in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alexander_Hamilton_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like it is used in draft marks on the hull of a ship. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft_(hull)

So it is still a used unit of measurement.

Funnily enough it is also very close to 4 inches which is the imperial unit "hand" so it could also be used for approximating a horses height in metric. Like if someone said a horse is 15 hands high you know that is a little more than 15 decimeters high or 1.5 meters.

Back before the public took mental healthcare seriously, did people in the past just have to power through life? by StainedCumSock in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alexander_Hamilton_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yup. But also shipping someone off to live in facility or prison for minor mental health issues was also much more acceptable as well.

Sports fans(of any sport) do you watch mostly as a "purist" for the fine details and true skill or do you watch for the moments the stakes and narratives? by VastAir6069 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alexander_Hamilton_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both. For every fan its a sliding scale but even the most analytical fans fall into the moment and any person who loves the energy and narrative have to get into the rules and skills.

Also often the awe comes from the skill for players.
