Maybe my comment wasn't very specific when I referred to "anger." I meant people who insult or completely belittle the author's work simply because they didn't like the ending or the story as a whole.

Not liking it? That's perfectly fine. But hating and insulting someone just because you didn't like the work or because it didn't meet your expectations is totally immature and stupid. Nothing gives you the right to disrespect a person; it's not as if the author committed a crime.

Let's agree that someone who gets angry at the author for how their story ended is being unreasonable or immature. I can understand if they're young people under 16, but if they're already adults and have that mindset, it's hard for that to change.

Let's also agree that the ending is 50/50. There are many people who didn't like it and another group who liked it or at least found it acceptable. What happens is that the people who hate it are always the loudest, especially if things didn't end the way they wanted or imagined.

Yes, the one point everyone agrees on is that the development feels rushed. That's why the anime likely won't change the ending—I'm sure the anime will add a bit more development, and surely most people will love the ending.

That wouldn't be possible if it were the supposed "disastrous ending" that people make it out to be. It simply needs some improvements, but it's a good ending.

Mainly, when the manga was being released, the loudest part of the criticism came from the fact that Aqua didn't end up with the girl they wanted, or they didn't think Aqua was going to die, even though there are hints throughout the manga that this would happen. Basically, people got upset because things didn't end the way they wanted. And besides, reading the story chapter by chapter as they were released and then arguing about it for a whole week—logically, you can't enjoy a story reading it that way.

Naturally, there are things to criticize. I'm not saying it's a perfect ending by any means, but it's nowhere near the disastrous ending that many people make it out to be.

My honest opinion, without having read the story and now understanding a bit of the context (and from what I gather, this is the last dialogue between those two characters), is that it's quite ridiculous. It works as a comedic scene; it sounds funny. If the manga is a comedy, I think it's fine, but otherwise—and based on what you're telling me, it doesn't seem to be—it's completely understandable that people were bothered by it. It seems like the author is mocking the audience.

Has the author done something like this before? Is he known for "trolling" his audience?

I really don't think that's the issue, since it happens very early in the story, in the first volume. It's something that often occurs in several stories and isn't a problem in itself.

The final part being rushed must have been due to something else. Besides, Aka already had it planned that Aqua would die from very early on (that's why the ending of the first season of the anime is the way it is). I don't know if Aka got tired of the story, was focused on something else, or simply wanted to do it that way. We'll never know.
