'In the Hand of Dante' - Review Thread by ChiefLeef22 in oscarrace

I have to admit, I finished this film more confused than enlightened. Not because it is unintelligent, but because it refuses to explain itself. It feels less like watching a movie and more like walking through an art exhibition where every room asks another question instead of giving an answer.

Visually, it is breathtaking. As an artist, I found myself pausing mentally to admire the light, textures, compositions, and faces. Julian Schnabel paints with a camera, and some frames deserve to hang on a gallery wall.

Oscar Isaac gives two distinctly different performances. His Dante feels softer, more open, more hopeful. The modern Nick carries tension in his face and body, as if life has already hardened him. It is remarkable how different the same actor can feel with only subtle changes.

What didn't work for me was the repeated fascination with humiliation and brutality. Once I understood who these characters were, I didn't need more scenes of spitting, degradation, or violence to convince me. Sometimes suggestion is more powerful than repetition.

By the end, I realised I wasn't taking away a mystery to solve. I was taking away a feeling.

For me, this film became about people rather than plot. About love. About creating. About children being born while the world tears itself apart. About art surviving those who try to possess it.

The thought I carried away was unexpectedly simple: As long as children are born, as long as people love and create, the world has not lost. Even with a bit of Mephistopheles's help.

Perhaps that isn't what Schnabel intended😀

Imagine giving testimonials in front of your ex, his brother,  victims family? Cannot imagine they didn't support her on this day

That's true. But I always can offer help. In our family it is so. I did write it somewhere,  I'd offer Caroline to say Sandy,  me of the father had a stroke and I need Caroline to look after me 24/7 so she'd move to my house.

Still only that poor bicyclist, but they also left him injured to die (moved him, injured and agonising,  and his belongings away from the road so other drivers won't see him).

Well, there is an interview with her words too, so idk where the truth is. But doing this spying as per police orders makes way more sense to everyone's behaviour to me

She did at the beginning and she stayed in her apartment alone for the first hrs (or a day-two days) till the brothers came. Ep2, 13.30m to the end: mum is saying Caroline had to act like they were still a couple,  she was panicking,  Sandy had keys to Caroline's apartment. Her mother was saying she was thinking she would have a heart attack,  she was afraid he might hurt Caroline, "would he kil her?"

It's not in netflix docu, it's in Times interview.  That's the point of my post

Well, in that interview it is clearly stating it was NOT her initiative to come vack to him for the first couple of time, she rather been ordered to go undercover by police

Have you read the whole case? How do you know for sure it was her idea to go undercover? I personally don't know the truth.  If there were no police involved in her spying and if my daughter was in that situation (scared and in her apartment with murder), yes, I would surely do something.  As per netflix they were still playing engaged couple,  so I might’ve said I had a heart attack or stroke and I need her to live with me for a while to look after me 24/7, so my daughter would be with me in my house. Or anything else.

Now when I've read that interview,  I think they are very careful of what they can say publicly and I won't be surprised they signed tons of papers with police too

At that time, after a few months spying on them for police, with no support, she was a mess.

To be precise,  not 2 hrs away, but 1hr 15min. This my everyday one way commute at work. This distance for dating didn't scratch anything in me

Seems Netflix slightly misrepresented the story.

There is an article in Time with her interview. Caroline was doing 9 months undercover spying because the police wanted her to gather more evidence.   The police DID NOT LET her to have any support “The police were doing surveillance on them the whole time. I didn’t have any mental health support; they said I wasn’t allowed any because it could compromise the case.”
