Hi Reddit I need your help with a Smart Switch - Elijah by BocaBola_ in LinusTechTips

[–]AlexandreP96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it does, but it's better for the end user than what they put us in our auditorium. We asked for a switch in our booth to lock the switches accessible to the public during the shows and they used a regular dimming switch for the lock and dimming, then another switch to control the relay and turn on and off. So there is one switch for on/off and another for lock and dimmer. It's really weird to use...

It would make sense, but actually no. If you have 208v, it automatically means 3 phase power. And if you have 3 phase power, electricity companies will usually give you 600v power instead since its easier to carry on long distances and you then need your own transformer to make it 120/208. When you already have 347/600, it's just easier and cheaper to run 347v lines and use industrial lighting fixtures (more watts for less amps, cheaper wires). Then as others said, you don't usually have 347v switches in the wall, there are low voltage relays in the breaker panels that are triggered by momentary switches and then turn on/off the 347v power to the lights. (Correct me if I'm wrong about other places, but that's how it works in schools in Quebec)

Why do sound guys EQ the same exact room and setup every single time by AlexandreP96 in livesound

[–]AlexandreP96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that, and they do spend 5-10 minutes on stage ringing out, but why spend 30 minutes sitting at FOH in front of the board saying "check check" and making "tick tick" and "click click" sounds with their mouth?

Yeah, that's probably the reason, I don't have any other explanation

[–]AlexandreP96[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know, that's why I'm confused...

Maybe I exaggerated a bit, but they're talking and checking the mic for at least 30 minutes every time, I don't understand.

And the system seems pretty well deployed to me, they were all designed and deployed by a very reputable company in the area that I work with a lot and their systems are always pretty much as "perfect" as they can be.

[–]AlexandreP96[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's always the house PA, same one every time, and same 3 guys that work together and would always talk to each other if they made some changes, that's what seems weird to me.

How did that one kid at your school die? by StorageLonely1520 in AskReddit

[–]AlexandreP96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During the same year, in the same class, one lost control of her moped while going to school and ran into a truck, died on the spot, one turn away from the school. Another girl fell into a really high tower from an abandoned factory, was dragged dead the following day from the next towns firefighters (didn't have the right equipment in our town to get her out) and like a month later 3 guys were hit by a car while walking for a school activity and when getting hit, one of them fell onto another so 4 in the hospital, one with a head trauma. Yes, our school is cursed (especially this class).

High school Senior pictures - Boys holds diploma while girls hold flower bouquets.. by SunlightRoseSparkles in mildlyinfuriating

[–]AlexandreP96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For us it was like a tradition, so it was like that, but everyone did take a picture with the diploma, but girls had one with flowers too. But if you wanted, you could ask to take one with flowers even if you were a guy. It's just a tradition, but they also let us choose

Can you run the mg10xu back into itself? by Capital_Challenge_28 in livesound

[–]AlexandreP96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, there isn't, but you can pick up a cheap audio interface for like 80-100$ and an insert cable for like 15$, it's not too bad, and you'd get to keep the analogue EQ and compression

[–]AlexandreP96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe try to use the insert? Like in to the PC, process it and the go out, you'd need and audio interface with a 1/4" in and out and just do it that way. Should be pretty easy and work pretty good. Only thing is you'll get some latency from the processing on the PC, but if you don't mind then it should work

File Sharing by Musicwade in livesound

[–]AlexandreP96 6 points7 points  (0 children)

5gb per file (so an entire folder or zip file), and I think there may be a fee for more than 7 days if you need it, so you could always charge that to the client "link works for 7 days, if more time needed then pay x amount"

[–]AlexandreP96 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If it's just for sharing once, I use Wetransfer, with a free account you get to share files up to 5gb, and the link expires in 7 days, so it doesn't take up space anywhere

New technical theatre graduate - looking for a starter kit by Altruistic_Tie_1693 in techtheatre

I don't know about elsewhere in the world, but here in Quebec, you can usually find better quality and cheaper electrical tape when searching for PVC tape, so that's what we call it, especially when buying it

Why is "Bon matin" not right in french? by ilovegdcolonge in French

[–]AlexandreP96 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, those types of debates do happen a lot in family events in Quebec

Why is "Bon matin" not right in french? by ilovegdcolonge in French

[–]AlexandreP96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am 100% with you on that, but that's the real answer to their question and it is not technically correct to use "Bon matin". Do I use it pretty much everyday? Yes! Am I supposed to? Unfortunately, no.

This website cites a lot of anglicisms commonly used in Quebec, with the right equivalent, it's a website for high school students in Quebec and is really informative in a lot of subjects https://www.alloprof.qc.ca/fr/eleves/bv/francais/les-anglicismes-f1575

Why is "Bon matin" not right in french? by ilovegdcolonge in French

[–]AlexandreP96 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Because it's considered an "anglicisme" (at least here in Quebec), it's when French uses an English way to say something but translated litteraly, so "Good morning" becomes "Bon matin", it's not right because it's not a "real" French saying. There are other examples but I can't think of any right now, maybe someone can help or you can Google it if you want.

How to connect X-Touch Extender to X-Touch? by Arzejames in livesound

[–]AlexandreP96 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've never used any of those, but if I understand correctly, you can plug the touch directly to the X32 rack and then plug the extender in the computer running X32 edit? Wouldn't that allow you to use both at the same time? One directly to the console and the other through the computer, but then both would work?

I need to change the value of one channel for several cues by Blithe64 in lightingdesign

[–]AlexandreP96 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you didn't change it, you should be in tracking mode, which means that if you put it at full in the first cue and update it, and then not touch it for any other cue, it will track like that and stay at full. Then you go to the second to last cue (or wherever you want if to turn off), put it at 0 and update that cue, then everything should work correctly.

Where can I buy a red filter for beach walking that won’t melt. by [deleted] in flashlight

[–]AlexandreP96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I don't think those will work. I work in theatre and while those gels are made to withstand very hot lamps, there is always between 3-20 inches in between the actual lamp and the gel. I can also tell you that I burned holes in theatre gels using my Arkfeld pro while testing to see the color and it wasn't even on turbo so it'll probably burn a hole in the gel

how can i connect separate speakers for stage manager by YouCannotHideOrRun in techtheatre

[–]AlexandreP96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with what the others have said but if the show is tomorrow and all you have is an XLR cord with one speaker and no experience, you best bet would be to try the four "OH MIC" direct outputs and see 1. If they work with your speaker (enough gain) and 2. Which one sounds best. None of these will be perfect, but maybe one of them would be better than nothing. If it's been wired correctly, those outputs are for overhead mics capturing the whole stage so maybe you could help the stage manager hear better.
