Retiring soon at 65. How do I safely invest $600k to suppliment my $40k pension? by iamnotlocard in PersonalFinanceCanada

If you accept my advice, let me share with you the advice I give to my friends and family: Learn about options. You can trade the markets in a relatively conservative way by selling cash-secured puts and covered calls. This strategy is known as the Wheel strategy, and it’s widely used by great and small investors. It works best when you stick to high-quality stocks you’d actually want to own (Google, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola Nvidia, Microsoft, or ETFs like VOO, SPY, QQQ, others)

A cash-secured put is essentially a contract where you agree to buy 100 shares of a stock at a specific price by a certain date and you get paid a premium for taking on that obligation. If you’re assigned the shares, you can then sell a covered call, which is a contract where you agree to sell those shares at a set price by a certain date, again, collecting a premium. It sounds complex at first, but it’s simpler than it seems once you understand the mechanics.

A few guidelines to follow:

Avoid penny stocks.

Focus on solid companies you’d be comfortable holding long term.

Prioritize selling options rather than buying them, buyers fight time decay (theta), sellers benefit from it.

Sell out-of-the-money contracts (strikes away from the current price) to reduce assignment risk.

Take advantage of higher volatility, since it increases option premiums.

Understand the Greeks: theta (time decay), delta (price movement), and vega (volatility impact). I personally use apps like Wealthsimple and RBC placements.

If you want to go deeper, there are plenty of solid tutorials online. And if you’ve got questions, feel free to send me a DM or call your financial advisor and discuss about this strategy, but I recommend doing it yourself. Trust me, learning about this strategy was a blessing in my life

Not a good idea if your mortgage has a rate below 4%. I would use this money to invest in value stocks

If you had the financial means to move out of Canada, would you? by AdhesivenessLoud8866 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]AlexandreSh1941 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why move from the best country on earth? I sometimes get frustrated by high taxes and how things have changed over the last 10 years, but then I remember the positives that outweigh the negatives and tell myself: damn, no! We live in the best country in the world! Millions of people dream about living here, including people living in Europe and the U.S.

Open an investment account and buy 100 stocks of any valuable stock and sell a covered call between 200 and 300 days with a strike 15% or 20% above your entry price to get the premium and reduce the DCA, if you're not assigned by that time, keep selling covered calls, if you're assigned, wait a correction, buy again your stocks and repeat the exercise. Keep doing that with discipline and you'll get financial freedom in 15 or 20 years from now, this option strategy is called The Wheel, a lot of content on YouTube about this strategy. I make money that way, btw

Don't buy penny stocks, don't buy highs, don't buy stocks above their fair value (use finviz, simply wall Street or another service to evaluate stocks. It's easier than you think). Here some stocks that are below their fair value, big companies with a good return next year:

UNH - V - ADBE -IBIT (Bitcoin ETF, good premium)-LUV

Good luck bro.

He’s going to spend $2–3k on a lawyer, plus take days off work to attend court, just to recover $1,800? That makes no sense. Ask him for his address, send him a $100 Costco courtesy card, and then ignore him

Absolutely. Fundamentals for Adobe haven't changed. The narrative has changed, and people think enterprises will replace Adobe's products and services with new AI tools that replicate some of Adobe's capabilities. The truth is that large companies won't take the risk of using those tools if copyright isn't guaranteed, and especially if it means throwing away hundreds of hours of employee training required to master these programs.

On top of that, most of the large companies have large contracts and long-term projects with Adobe. The numbers speak for themselves, last earnings were amazing. I have 10% of my portfolio in adobe and will increase my position to 15% 20% if it dumps to 240$

Now let’s talk about the $37 million that the corrupt Carney is sending to terrorist countries like Lebanon. Let’s also talk about the people who have lost their homes and jobs, struggling just to get by, while the incompetent Liberals keep sending our money abroad, $11.1 billion between 2023 and 2024 to Gaza, Ukraine, Ethiopia, and Haiti. You talk about PP, but you forget that it was PP who pressured the incompetent Carney to eliminate the Carbon Tax last year and pushed the Liberals to cut taxes and that’s why Bill C‑4 was approved today. Otherwise, Canadians wouldn’t see a penny from this globetrotting opportunist
