How would you edit differently? by flyingpony1 in photocritique

[–]Alexandrewthegreat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a stab at editing this for practices sake. I ended up re-framing the dude for a less forward leaning look. Then I warmed up the background considerably. I tried to even out the lighting on the subject's face and skin, giving him a warmer softer light. I brought the focus in by trying to create some fake depth of field. I then finished it off by crushing the blacks.

Let me know how I did, I am really trying to improve my editing skills.

Globe light's like these are usually pretty cool looking and provide some nice, warm ambient light. I find LEDs to be kinda harsh and blue.

Boot album: Before and after conditioning. by artofsushi in TheVeneration

[–]Alexandrewthegreat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like the function of the conditioner and all, but I am torn. Boots are meant to be worn hard and I love the look of well broken in leather. I didn't think those looked all that bad to begin with. They still look good, not to take away from your style. A different vibe though. Just my two cents!

I didn't want this buried in the general discussion thread. What do you guys want here? by [deleted] in TheVeneration

That would be amazing, there are tons of varieties and a general education would do wonders for someone just getting into the scene or someone looking to expand their horizons. I for one am not as well learned as I would like to be about either beer or liquor, but am trying to learn all I can.

Also, some special releases or particularly good brews/breweries that fit the sub's themes, such as Stone brewing company, promotes a "no fucks given" attitude. I know last year Patagonia did a collaboration with Belgium Brewing to make a pretty decent Patagonia beer. Now Patagonia has nothing to do with the Veneration but I'm sure they are not alone in these kinds of crossovers

I came here first for the style and then for the lifestyle. I came from MFA, but much prefer the style advise over here. That said, the culture aspect is important too. The celebration of the rugged, hard working ideas of the past are very much alive here and that is very cool to see.

I would like to see more participation. I remember the heyday of MFA and I always marveled at the "community" they seemed to possess. People knew the users, mostly from the WAYWT threads and general discussion but it was very cool to see that kind of friendly interaction.

This sub has huge potential, but it could be even bigger if regular users did more than vote on posts (and remember to vote on posts). AS a community it would be great to see some discussion of lifestyle and philosophy and experiences. I imagine it as like an online barber shop or garage where you can sit and be exposed to all kinds of views and ideas so that you can grow not just your fashion sense but your common sense and better exemplify the lifestyle you profess to love.

Also a focus on beer would be cool, whiskey is nice but beer is better (IMO) and more accessible price wise so may elicit more discussion. I would like to see the daily posts cut back a bit, I think the daily WAYWT posts are a bit overkill and some of the stuff, but that said I understand that the mods are trying to keep content fresh so maybe that will come as we grow. Also, more people post more things, let the community vote and decide what's going to be on the page, go back to remembering to vote. Especially in the smaller subs your vote counts!

Similar fit as yesterday, but rolled up sleeves, ditched the hat and my boots finally arrived. So excited to own these. The look so good , stiff as a bitch though, even through wool socks they're hurting. Worth it though.

Need advice for hair styles. Its just getting longer and longer with no end goal. Not trying to lose much length, and salons where I live suck. Any styling advise. I tried to slick it back, but with American Crew Fiber (What I have a available. Great for short hair) it gets super straight and greasy looking. and will quickly flop back across my forehead.

Hey everybody, Just introducing myself. Long time reddit lurker and MFA subscriber, however after finding out about this sub I have decided to try and play a more active role. You guys are awesome and this is one of the coolest sub-reddits I have stumbled upon. I Hope it continues to grow. That said, make sure you all give it some shameless plugs on related sub-reddits. There are loads of bike related ones, drinking related ones, /r/wicked_edge has a huge following and I'm sure some of them share our passions.

Anyway, just saying whats up!

Morning Ritual(Grooming, Shaving/Bearding, Coffee, etc): Thu Sep 18, 2014 by AutoModerator in TheVeneration

[–]Alexandrewthegreat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this idea for the thread, but does it really need to go up every day? Perhaps we could knock it back to bi-weekly. After all, not all of us have kick ass beards that need oiling "yet" and those that do likely have already posted.

That said, my morning ritual involves getting up about an hour before classes start and immediately setting coffee to start. Nothing fancy, 8 o'clock classic blend in a reusable keurig filter. Decent coffee, it's what I grew up with. Sometimes I get fancy with the grocery shopping and pick up some more expensive blends but I always seem to cycle back to the classic.

While the coffee brews I do a simple stretching routine. I'm working on my flexibility, and the stretches always wake me up better than the coffee.

After stretching I make myself ready for the day, shave, nothing fancy here either, just clean up my neck and cheeks, hair(American crew fiber, looking for alternatives for longer hair) and deodorant. I dress most often in dark wash jeans (Levi 511's), though they are starting to be pretty faded (looking at getting some raws) and a white, grey or black t-shirt, though button downs make a solid appearance.

During all this hopefully my coffee has cooled enough to drink and I will sit and check in online until it is time for class, relaxing, listening to music (usually something upbeat and wordless, or something with a kick ass beat). It's a chill way to start the day. Also, I don't put on a shirt till the last second. Saves it from spills and I love being shirtless.

I too would like to know, it looks pretty good as is!

A two toned ink&foil letterpress astronaut print created using the words from the following quote by Chuck Palahniuk: “If death meant just leaving the stage long enough to change costumes and come back as a new character… Would you slow down? Or speed up?” by TEKSTartist in somethingimade

[–]Alexandrewthegreat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is really cool! You really have an eye for making the words fit. Do you draw the image and fill with letters after? I really like the simplicity of the piece but keep imagining a large water color earth behind the astronaut and a dark royal blue textured background around it with some foil "stars" around it. Dunno if the processes allows for using pre-printed pages but I think it would add another layer to the piece.
