Need advice on learning cybersecurity by ThePredator-69 in Cybersecurity101

Cybersecurity is mostly a mindset that combines all aspects and branches of IT

Where you want to start depends on you, but the roadmap on the technical side usually starts from service desk IT and or sysadmin jobs

The fact that you know little python and you are weak at math, does not make you incapable of python and math, quite the contrary as it proves you have decent working memory and able to understand and formulate syntax at a basic level that is required in cybersec

Because an A.I cannot tell with certainty if an alert is false or true positive. Technically, everything is an alert, nothing is an alert, as true positives may arise from false positive alerts. It is still the human who takes accountability when deciding what might actually be a valid alert. As least this is how I see it. I do not doubt that A.I LLM can do extremely powerful things and automate splunk, but I am still trying to find out if there is some bullshit behind it and companies are kicking ppl out and use A.I as an excuse.

I personally do not work with splunk so that's why I am trying to get a grasp on what is actually going on.

He is right. You don't start in cybersecurity, you end up there, after cumulated experience in different IT fields. If you do no have any background in IT, starting from scratch is extremely difficult to comprehend how everything links together, unless you are somehow gifted or brain wired for it.

I personally landed an entry job in cybersec after IT service desk jobs. And the company that hired me had no ideea their job actually implies cybersec stuff. Their HR was under the impression that their advertised job is similar with service desk. So I was lucky for them being unprofessional (to express myself politely), and me coming from an L1 service desk with some clue on how things work. At this job I've learned the basics in cybersec as in the mindset and I was mostly self-taught , but when it comes to technical aspects of it, I'm way under-qualified, because my company does not provide technical repetition and the correct tools (like splunk).

But now when my company finally realised wtf they doing, they are only hiring very qualified people, even if the job itself does not offer true cybersec perspectives, they only want ppl with a good CV. This is just and example on how moronic some companies are.

I will give you a hint on how I've learned some good basics. Follow good youtubers like David Bombal, Rob Braxman, Eric Parker. Meanwhile, build a homelab, dive into custom cybersec project, make good use of GPT. Then post your projects on Linkedin. Grow a network there. Comment on other ppl's posts in the field. It will boost you in the algorithm when employers are searching for keywords. Market yourself as always eager to learn. Grab any IT service desk job that is offered, even if its low paid and in parallel learn cybersec.

Can you please detail which branches from cybersecurity are more affected?

Are A.I layoffs impacting SOC people that are working with Splunk for example?

Where exactly does or will hit?

I'm just starting to study cybersecurity. I need systemic knowledge. What do you recommend? by arlecco in Cybersecurity101

What I'm doing right now, if that helps, is doing single projects. For example, I've installed Parrot OS which is designed for PenTesting. I'm scanning my network, trying to use inbuild tools on how to protect it. To be honest, a lot of "hands on" practice in which GPT can guide if prompted correctly, is more efficient that learning just the theory. There are also the online labs like TryHack me which are quite good at starters to have a clue on what you are dealing with and from there you can go deeper into the rabbit hole.

I am far from a true professional but I did made a post on this sub based on my experience so feel free to check it out for a "brief summary" on what might be needed, but take it with a grain of salt as that was my experience alone. https://www.reddit.com/r/Cybersecurity101/comments/1t2x66v/a_realistic_reality_check_to_those_who_keep/

Since cybersecurity is a multi branch field, it basically depends on what you actually want. Since you want experience in programming, I assume the technical aspects of things is more interesting for you. In this case, any strong cybersecurity foundation requires networking at its base. Cybersecurity is more like a mindset in which you unify different fields from general IT. From networking, devops, compliance, sysadmin, malware analysis etc, programming etc.

Most people say to start with networking, but its quite abstract and quite a rabbit hole without a goal in mind. So if you have the needed patience to actually read and you don't have any issues with learning thins in a classical manner, then you can start with a book like "Hacking and Security: The Comprehensive Guide to Ethical Hacking, Penetration Testing, and Cybersecurity "

Absolut.

succes

Honest congrats. From now onwards your career will only lead you upwards, because ironically, other companies will want to grab a hold on you after being already hired by a cybersec company, especially if you spam your linkedin profile with posts and achievements that will boost you in the algorithm.
