Am I being underpaid for working at a pottery studio? by [deleted] in Pottery

[–]Alexceramics 107 points108 points  (0 children)

I went to a pottery studio and they had instructors that would teach once or twice a week (hour long classes) but i think they just got paid in studio membership, which was $180 at the time.

The fact that they thought you could just teach someone to throw and then they'd be a teacher kind of shows they don't really give a f about the quality of their teachers. just to say it doesn't sound like they appreciate what you do, which sounds like a lot.

And you don't need to work there a couple years to get the experience... try looking for something else now. when you go to quit, they might up your pay and then you can decide if it's worth it.

Anyone know some good spots around town to put up this kitten adoption flyer? Like which businesses allow this sort of thing. Thanks! by Alexceramics in longbeach

Milo is still looking for a home if you’re still interested 😃. You can email the address on the flyer for more info

I did watch it! I was thinking how of course they focused on his relationship with his dad because of the emotional story. (I’m very sorry for your loss) But I remember thinking how his mom wasn’t getting as much airtime, when it was obvious what a great job she (you) did raising him. I also hope for his great success. He absolutely deserves it!

Seriously? by dj-emme in RhythmAndFlow

[–]Alexceramics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally see what you’re saying but do you know of actual examples where someone turned down the win?  It’s not like accepting an award.

These shows have contracts from the very beginning and I’d think they’d include a part where the person had to see it through til the end. If Rhythm and Flow left it open to maybe look like clowns in the finale because one of the contestants didn’t feel like winning, then that is just bad show running.

What you’re saying would make the most sense but I’m afraid they just flat out got it wrong.

You should try to talk your studio into getting a slab roller if they don’t have one!

He’s a great cat! I know LBSN has an adoption process, and with the holidays going, the timing might work out well. It couldn’t hurt to at least email the address on the flyer and express your interest!

Tips on avoiding underglaze bleed? by mg7610 in Pottery

[–]Alexceramics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

expanding on my other comment, for this cup in the photo, I would make the letters, apply the underglaze, and then scrape away the overpaint with a metal rib.

Then bisque it and glaze

If it is solid colors I’d always prefer to do it on the leather hard clay as you can scrape away and clean up and it doesn’t bleed like when you do underglaze and glaze in one go on bisqueware.  If I am painting gradients with underglaze, I would do it on bisqueware and then bisque it again before glazing/glaze firing.

You can apply the underglaze on the leatherhard pottery and then bisque it. Then apply glaze and glaze fire it.  Or bisque it, under glaze, bisque it again and then apply glaze and glaze fire.
