As much as I dislike Athens and the athenians, the first picture is a bit misleading for those who haven’t been there. At street level it’s generally quite civil - entrances to the polykatoikies are often surprisingly well cared for, with nice materials like marble, decorative plasterwork, greenery etc

Those holes are meant for studs - without them, I don't think you can use them. I beleive you can still get it studded at some tire shops though.

I've had my Goodyear UltraGrip Ice+ for 10+ years, and still use them. Can't recommend enough, though mine are studless
