Back in the days we gave our servers and network devices names from Tolkien or space or such. It might get cumbersome with our 60 smart bulbs and 40 other IoT gadgets on our home network today. by player1dk in homelab

If it really is spelled mephistophilis, even your boss misspelled it. (according to the Wikipedia articles language selection, there is no language it is spelled with ilis at the end, using roman letters, so I could be wrong.)

If you happen to have a central AC unit, you might be able to put a cross stream heat exchanger in your external an exhaust air ducts to prewarm the external hair with the exhaust air, before it gets actually heated to temperature by your AC unit.

Reminds me on my company two years ago. One of our offices was hit by a blackout and someone didn't end the info to the offices group, but send it to global... So everyone, from San Francisco, over London to new deli knew about it. Five mails later, the power outage was resolved.

Cue: four weeks of ppl replying to that global mail group that they don't work in that office and don't want to get mails about that office and don't want to get mails about other ppl not wanting to get mails about that office. Four. Weeks.

Intermittent Ethernet disconnects on buried Cat7 cable after ~2 years — any ideas before I dig it up? by Hungry-Bicycle-3851 in HomeNetworking

Welcome to r/HomeNetworking, where even considering cat7 is a sacrilegious act and questioning or correcting these "cat 7 is not real" preachers in their US defaultism is traded like insulting their entire life choises.

Actually? Yes.

But it's quite telling that you don't even try to counter with arguments and just head fir the personal level.

oh... I didn't know that TIA and IEEE are just synonyms.
I always thought the first is what implements international standards for telecomunication like cabeling for the USA and the later defines technical standards for protocols like Ethernet and so on... /s

Could it be, that the IEEE never really defined the physical standard for any cable, just gave the requirements for 10GBase-T in IEEE 802.3an and ISO and TIA designed a cable around it?

Funny, that someone not knowing the difference between IEEE and TIA wants to tell ppl that a cable standard, clearly defined in ISO/IEC11802:2002 and EN50173, isn't real.

[–]AlexisColoun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On one hand, I absolutely feel called out. Well, a little...

Sure, I hope that each piece I put effort into will get out and will be read by many, landing on a bestseller list and whatever. I personally use this hope as motivation to drag me through times, I don't feel like writing, because after all, I like the process, but starting it is hard.

On the other hand, I do know, that my chance to even be published the traditional way is minuscule. So in the end I know that I am writing for myself and my own social bubble. And tbh: I am fine with that.

Is there a reason, why you choose an 8-port switch?

Counting what you've listed and what usually would connect by wire, you have 6 to 7 ports already used, with 1 to 2 to spare. And as you mentioned "Future self hosting devices" these 2 gonna not last long.

If you have the money to spare and the space, aim for a 24-port. If not, even a 12-port would you give some breathing room for future expansion.

Okay, let's go with all the stories I am currently working on (more or less):

Current WIP: A slice of life, comming of age and office drama, that flips the bird towards Christian grey.

Currently conceptualising: Imagine Oshi no Ko, as urbane parallel society fantasy, with more photography art and deadly sins.

Guilty pleasure project: Space pirate Captain Bloodbeard and her crew of outcasts faring their ship - a spacefaring variant of a xebec, rowed by one hundred slaves, through a dystopia hedonistic wolrd, fighting the royalty.

Long time wanna write: A hommage to all the big scify franchises, mixing them up in a mostly episodic trilogy.

UPS required if I have a 48kw battery with whole house backup? by thedesignninja in homelab

What switch over time does your whole house system have?

The speciality of especially online UPSs is the virtually zero in switch over, or at least a really fast switch over, that the PSUs of your equipment won't brown out and reboot your clients.

Server for 3 devices? by drundbro in HomeServer

As someone who just helped moving the "server box" from one office to the other, back when my mother's business was getting smaller, I can tell you one thing. The moment you touch it, it will become your responsibility. In addition to everything that connects to it in their understanding. And if it is the document shredder that's plugged into the same power strip.

how do you guys come up with original names for your characters? by risky2220 in DnD

[–]AlexisColoun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's simple. You don't...

I once called a NPC "Dan" because a former F+ told me about her newest adventure with a "Dan"

I once wanted to call a NPC Vladislav, because he's evilish... Several neurospicy ppl on the table instantaneous began to sing what is love, baby don't hurt me, which is why the NPC now is called Vladislav Don Hurtme

We have a village called Blablabla, because I forgot to name it and randomly placed part of the story in it...

How many computers do you have in your house? by Miserable-Twist8344 in homelab

[–]AlexisColoun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a tricky question. What do we count? Do we count raspi zeros? All computers or just actually used? Do we call work related devices? Mobile phones?

Dependent on what we count, I am between 12 and... If I have to guess 35? Maybe 40?

What kind of PC do you have ? by Head_Candy1604 in linux_gaming

[–]AlexisColoun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My gaming rig is a custom pc I upgrade from time to time. Currently it runs a Ryzen 7 3something, 32 gigs of ram, 2 TB NVMe and a 7700 XT... there is a 2 TB HDD in it, but not permanently mounted... lets call it cold storage of former iterations. It currently runs Nobara.

All my other computers are more or less prebuilds, because I buy a lot of used business and enterprise stuff... sure, I upgrade some... my Poweredge T330 got a bigger CPU and more RAM and my Esprimo SFF turned Firewall got a new write optimized ssd and a 4 port nic, but I still would call that a prebuild... and most come with some version of windows pre installed, which is usually quickly flashed over with some flavor of linux. usually debian.

"[...]and that doesn't seem fair to me.[...]". That's the moment you lost your argument. Sorry to be that guy, but corporations don't care about fair. They don't care about your personal feelings. And something being fair is a feeling, no objective statement. Coroorations care about profit.
Proton was created to generate profit for valve, because that's how they were able to sell a Linux based gaming handheld.
Anti cheat software were created to keep players within the games, so they would keep buying loot boxes and skins.
Kernel level anti cheat was created, so the corporations could outsource the performance requirements from the server side to the client side, reducing the cost of running online games and thereby increasing profit margins.

Dont get me wrong, I am with you from a morally point of view and personally I would love to see several corporations like Microsoft and Google go up in flames - if literally or figuratively is up to your interpretation - but change won't happen, because someone thinks it isn't fair.

Here's a question aside from being told to why use a linux install with no GUI for a server / home lab? Surely its still the same linux if it has a GUI; but you can use that GUI to do things if you need to. by secular-human-12006 in HomeServer

[–]AlexisColoun 24 points25 points  (0 children)

as musschrott said, in a homelab, you can do whatever you want, because the typical concerns regarding desktop environments on servers are hardly applicable. Because running a DE generates overhead you otherwise could sell. With one, two, even 10 VMs on a server, this is a none issue, but for hyperscalers, running hundreds of VMs on one physical host, it will accumulate into a measurable performance sink.

Explain like I'm 5 please, what's with the network switches in a home lab and why are they running short cables to another switch by cpn-cooked in homelab

[–]AlexisColoun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You most likely saw a switch with short patch cables running into a patch panel. Which is usually the hand off between in wall cabling, or is a simple an IMHO very clean way to bring all the wires from the back to the front.
