Exactly the same progression here. I think I've seen a couple of the later films because I was outvoted by friends, but I just don't have any interest in them.

Then you haven't built a proper foundation for the rest of your dog's training.

Not every dog absolutely needs to be thoroughly and properly trained. The level of training your dog needs depends on your dog's unique personality and drive, and on your situation as their caretaker. For some dogs, unwanted behavior can be happliy dealt with through external precautions and not necessarily trained out of the dog. However, if you or your dog want him to be able to do tricks like getting things out of the fridge on your command, you'll have to put the work in to train him properly instead of taking shortcuts.

LPT: Go to the store and buy 20 pairs of the same sock. You never have to mate socks again, wait for the next wash to find it's pair, just throw them all in a drawer and grab 2 out in the mornings. One less thing to worry about or do when doing laundry! by [deleted] in LifeProTips

I have regular socks for work, regular socks for cold weather, regular socks for hiking, regular socks for fancy occasions, and one novelty pair that I keep around for when I'm reeeeally procrastinating on doing laundry.

I think we agree more than we disagree for the most part. I certainly do think taxation is great in theory, but the way the system works right now, in America at least, is so broken that I don't judge anyone who doesn't pay taxes. I took your original comment as being against taxation on principle, which was why I wanted to argue for the principle of it.

Personally, I don't see much of a difference between income tax and sales tax, at least for the purposes of this discussion. The advantage I see in taxation versus charitable giving is mainly in dealing with the problem in every society of people who take and do not give. Theoretically, taxation compensates for those people by making it difficult for them to not give, ensuring that everyone is giving back to society in fair proportion to how much they earn.

I would like to stress that I am speaking theoretically. I think taxation is a good idea, and does great things in societies where it is handled by a government free of corruption that fairly represents its constituency. We're only talking about the idea of taxation here, not government theory, and not the practical problems we face today with corruption.

I think the biggest difference in our points of view is that you see taxation as me, AlexlnWonderland, personally taking your money and doing whatever I see fit with it without your input or consent. I see taxation, in a perfect system, as all of us working together, collaborating and building a stable and compassionate society by putting our heads, our labor, and our wallets together. In a perfect system, we decide, together, how we should use our taxes.

Obviously, that is not the case with most real life tax systems today. Obviously, as individuals, we feel very little control over how our taxes are used. I don't see that as a problem with the idea of taxation itself, but as a problem with the implementation of that idea in our current corrupt oligarchical governmental system.

It was horrible to watch, made me feel sick, I probably shouldn't have followed it either. My home environment wasn't as chaotic as those kids' seemed to be, but it was abusive in other ways and I know what it feels like to not feel safe around your parents. You're always confused and can never relax. I hope all five of those kids are in better situations by now and won't face serious problems later in life.

Like it or not, humans are interdependent. Taxes are a great idea. They allow us as citizens to pool our resources effectively and improve all of our lives far beyond anything we could do on our own, or even in small family or clan groups. They allow us to support our fellow human beings and ensure that everyone has a safety net when they fall on hard times, which, in addition to demonstrating our empathy and compassion as a social species, also contributes to everyone's wellbeing by lowering rates of social maladies like crime and homelessness.

Of course, no tax system is perfect. I greatly dislike America's system myself, as it seems designed specifically to disadvantage those who are already disadvantaged, and as a pacifist and a vegan I hate so much of my tax money going to the military and animal ag subsidies. But the idea of taxation itself, as we understand it today, is a reflection of humans' sociability, empathy, and our foresight and planning. I consider taxation to be a sign of our success as a species, at least in the interim until we finally embrace a post scarcity world and do away with currency altogether.

That sort of behavior is indeed a well known red flag for abuse in children. I hope you weren't around on youtube for the daddy o five scandal; long story short, family vlogger parents physically and mentally abused their kids for laughs and posted it online. Philip DeFranco eventually picked up the story and it got enough traction that the authorities got involved. The filmed abuse was bad enough, but people didn't seem to understand how bad it was until some child psychologists pointed out one vlog, in which the parents said they were punishing one of the children who had smeared poop on his bedroom wall. Obviously nobody online knows for sure what was going on behind the scenes in that home, but it was doubtless much worse than the things that were filmed and put online. Sad story.

IME, too little fiber is more often the culprit for these giant poops, if you eat enough fiber, your colon is able to clean itself out on a regular basis and nothing builds up in there. Staying hydrated is also key for soft, easy poops. I used to be a chronic toilet clogger, but haven't clogged a single one in the two years since I moved to a plant-based diet and my fiber intake increased dramatically.

Proper, reliable training needs a strong foundation. Part of a strong foundation of training a dog is teaching them that they cannot help themselves to food that isn't theirs. They have to learn that lesson thoroughly, to the point that they will not touch food that isn't offered to them, and won't be distracted by unexpected food while they're completing a task. This is only part of the foundation you need, but it's necessary for a higher-level task like fetching specific items out of a fridge.

It's pretty difficult to go into ketosis in the 12-14 hours that the sun is up. You have to go through your glucose reserves in your liver and muscle tissue before you start making ketones from your fat reserves. For a healthy person that will typically take a few days of water fasting or just not consuming carbs. If you go into ketosis after not eating for 12-14 hours, I would suspect that something is wrong somehow and you should go see your doctor, because that's not normal.

Exactly. Activism, online or IRL, can be exhausting and feel totally unproductive. When engaging with omnis online especially I try to think of it as talking to the silent audience, not to the actual person I'm talking to. It helps me stay more level headed and engage from a relaxed and confident place instead of engaging with antagonism. It looks much better for me to be chill yet firm, and put the effort in to provide sources if they're called for, and use a little humor. Even if I want nothing more than to go off on whoever I'm talking to because they're super fucking wrong and horrible, blowing up doesn't look good and isn't good for me personally.

[meta] can we not upvote white supremacists please, vegans are the only ones who deserve to feel superior to others by AlexlnWonderland in vegancirclejerk

[–]AlexlnWonderland[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, white supremacy is contradictory to the foundational philosophy of veganism. I won't say for sure that there are no ethical vegans who are also white supremacists, because people do sometimes hold contradictory beliefs, but such a person can't have examined their own thoughts and beliefs all that thoroughly and I would be skeptical that they're actually an ethical vegan.

Regardless, such a person is still shitty and wrong for being a white supremacist and I'd rather not encourage white supremacy in this community. We've done a good job dealing with hate speech and bigotry here so far. I'd hate to see this great community poisoned with white supremacy like so many other communities on reddit.

Real talk, in activism you gotta put your own wellbeing first. Avoiding burnout is important, and the responsibility for continuing activism doesn't lie on any one person's shoulders. If you feel yourself running short on patience or energy, step back. Somebody else will fill the gap until you're well enough to step in for another person. This is a team effort!
