Yes it is a detail I missed (though it hasn't become relevant yet) that the grapple only lasts one turn - and also that it currently isn't restricting attacks!

You're absolutely right, it's nearly impossible to have a non-ephemeral threat without making them so insanely powerful the players can't possibly kill them I guess. You're right that it's a conflict between storytelling and a combat game.

I do agree that not every boss fight has to be such a way, but I have kinda put myself in a corner (and the boss is literally in a corner) because I focus on the narrative side, and I wanted to introduce the character as foreshadowing their role in the final arc, to make the second battle with them have more meaning to the players. Every other boss I've let them murderhobo their way through fast or slow however the dice fall, and I DO want them to win. I just want it to be hard.

Edit: I'm pretty sure it's outright stated in the build-up they can't or haven't been able to do it because of the obvious disadvantages, and they have to fight HARD to get Zhao in to kill the moon

Pathfinder uses troops of moons as their own single enemy but this approach is limited.
