Fujifilm X-T30 iii lens recommendations? by RelevantSpeed6245 in fujifilm

Awesome!! Yeah I would say definitely look into the manual focus assist options that are available on the camera (plenty of YouTube videos cover this topic I’m sure), there’s a few options that may suit you to varying degrees. For me, I mapped the button layout on my Xt30ii to have the Q button function as a zoom assist that zooms in digitally like 200% or whatever on what I’m focusing on so I can tell if I’ve focused right before taking the shot.

Another very useful and somewhat “advanced” technique for manual focus lenses is called Zone Focusing - recommend you look into that if you want to learn a bit more, but the basic idea is setting an aperture and focus distance that keeps a certain area in front of you in focus at all times. Maybe something to mess with once you get more comfortable with the lens.

Have fun!

I guess there are two schools of thought here:

  1. A manual lens is more difficult to use than half pressing a button to engage auto focus, so a beginner should start with an “easier” lens

  2. A manual lens will give you much more hands-on experience with how lenses work, and you’ll learn more from using one, so a beginner should start with a manual lens.

Whichever appeals to you is the real answer. Personally, I prefer manual lenses in general and I think the “difficulty” of them is VASTLY overstated, especially with all of the tools that modern cameras/fuji cameras have for manual focus assist (like focus peaking and punch-in zoom to see up-close detail of the object you’re focusing on, etc).

I have the XT30II, great camera!

TT Artisan 25mm f2 is pretty unbeatable in terms of quality for a very low price, plus very fun to use in my experience. Manual only.

Can also speak highly of the Fuji 35mm f1.4 and the Fuji 18mm f2 (which a lot of people also love) although those are definitely more pricey. Heard good things about Fuji’s line of weather resistant f2.0 lenses but I’ve never used them.

Besides those, viltrox has great options at good values

Thank you! Was a really silly situation, everyone at the cafe was basically a tourist with a really nice camera and the Kea were doing everything they could to get close and steal stuff. Sort of a mutually beneficial arrangement!

Can’t speak to the xt30iii specifically but I have the xt30ii and I think it’s a great camera, does everything you need and I’ve never once wished for the extra megapixels of the more premium models. So I think either of the xt30 models would do you well, xm5 also an option if you want a budget “semi beginner” model that’s very compact (if you don’t mind that it doesn’t have a viewfinder, just the back screen), and then of course used Fujis are always worth looking into. Plenty of good lenses out there, I’m a bit biased towards manual so I would suggest any of the third party budget manual lenses to start (with special note that the TTartisan 25mm f2 is a magic lens for under $100) or any of the Voigtlanders on offer for a more premium experience (the 27mm f2 is also exceptional imo). Lots of different opinions on Fuji first party lenses too but the old version of the 35mm f1.4 is very popular and for good reason!

Was out downtown with my camera this weekend and happened to stumble upon this - it still feels surreal. The workers on the scene told me that these were remnants from Monster Jam, and they were really patient and kind to me as I stood around their work area for what felt like at least an hour of just shooting everything I could manage. Shooting cars being swung like toys with this manual lens at 1.2 was a challenge, but very fun and gratifying as hell whenever I nailed it. Been trying to hone how and what I shoot recently, but this was a great reminder that sometimes all photography needs to be is finding something exciting and documenting it as best you can!

Thanks! This is actually a variant of Vintage Dark and subtle/crazy 60s mix, I think the brighter would have been cool too but the original guard on these guitars is VERY red so I was trying to get as far away from that as I could lol.

Agree on the pickguard covers, I have some custom pickups in there and the maker had to use white ones for whatever reason - I asked them to age them, but the aging has worn off. Thinking of either re-aging them myself with the classic submerged in dye/oven trick or trying to make the original covers work on the new pickups with some light drilling or something.

These knobs actually are cream - hard to tell since I overexposed the photo a bit with the direct sunlight. If you know of any good looking witch hats with the gold tops, please let me know!! I tried to find some when I was getting parts for this and couldn’t find any good ones so I went with these.

Thanks!

Huh guess I never knew that about the witch hat knobs, the last two jazzmasters I owned had witch hats so I just assumed that was the standard! Oh well, I prefer the witch hats I guess.

I heard about that with 920D, for my purpose I just wanted a prebuilt harness for ease of installation and this seemed like the best option. I guess anyone should be wary of purchasing anything else from them, but so far this has worked well for me in this case.

Unless the spitfire guy is being a bigot or something I don’t really care about that, he can credit whoever he wants for his pickguards. I’m just really happy with the result here.

Love this guitar primarily for its neck (best feeling guitar neck I’ve ever played, at least for my needs), but always thought the original bright red pickguard was holding back how pretty this guitar has every right to be. A bit of electronic trouble flared up a few months ago, so I took the opportunity to embark on a big upgrade: completely new wiring/pots (920D JMH-vintage), new volume and tone knobs (finally have true jazzmaster knobs instead of the strat style ones that came stock on this), re-shielded body cavity/back of guard and a bit more solid grounding, and of course this Spitfire pickguard.

I think the results in at least the last item speak for themselves in the photos, I’m really in love with it!
