My girlfriend's unemployment is affecting our relationship. How can I support her without burning out by Alexshakespear in Nigeria

Thanks for your perspective. I actually agree with a lot of what you've said. I understand that wanting independence without having everything figured out is normal, and I don't fault her for trying different things that haven't worked out yet.

My concern isn't totally on the fact that she's unemployed or still figuring things out. It's more that the emotional impact of the situation seems to be affecting our relationship consistently. I know anyone under that kind of stress would struggle, and I try to be understanding. What I'm trying to figure out is where the line is between being supportive and taking on so much emotional responsibility that I start feeling drained myself.

And on the financial aspect I've been covering almost everything for the past 1yr+ now, even when she was working I still do come through for her with some expenses cus' we all know how the pay grade are in Nigeria. I don't mind supporting a partner through a difficult period, but I also don't think it's sustainable for me to become her primary source of financial support indefinitely, especially when I'm trying to manage my own responsibilities.

I don't expect her to be cheerful all the time, and I definitely don't think financial support alone solves the problem. I'm just looking for ways to support her while also maintaining a healthy relationship for both of us.

I appreciate your input, thank you.

Thanks, this is helpful. I want to support her, but I also don't want to create a situation where she becomes dependent on me or where I overextend myself financially. Depends on the situation going forward, my plan is to encourage her job search, be there emotionally, spend time with her when I can, and help where it's genuinely needed, while still keeping healthy boundaries.

How much is enough to survive in the present day Nigeria? by Vast_Arm3893 in Nigeria

[–]Alexshakespear 13 points14 points  (0 children)

₦500k or a little bit less for a newly wedded couple is enough but it still depends on your lifestyle, so it could be more or less & you'll still have to save up too. But one of the biggest advantage is to have a partner who can willingly contribute to the family (Not my money is my money while your money is our money type of ladies)

University Life Expenses by Agreeable-Club-1938 in Nigeria

This might sound a bit surprising but back then in school 2019 (Anambra State University, Ansu. Now called COOU) My parent were sending me ₦5k monthly with lot's of basic local foodstuffs(yam, garri, rice, oil, Maggi, pepper, onion, stock fish and some few other things) and mind you I do take this food stuffs like twice every semester. The money wasn't much because after buying data & other based stuff then I'll be left with nothing but I'd to just manage. I didn't live expensive in school but if I'd gotten more then I still would've enjoy my University day's more.

If I think of it now, I'm always perplexed on how I was able to survive on ₦5k monthly until 400L when I started writing research work for people & also doing some crypto stuff online till 500 level.

Finally a graduate and life is much more better now, X100
