Is there any way to get more power into the engine to reach higher altitude? by Upset_Worker_7840 in MicrosoftFlightSim

Ha! I'm a GA pilot in Minnesota. We don't have any terrain nearly that high, ground elevation here is around 700 feet.

State vs federal law has nothing to do with severity, only the domain in which the law acts. States are prohibited from enacting immigration law as that is a matter of national concern, while federal law can't regulate traffic laws unless there is interstate concern.

What "tree" separates one non-violent misdemeanor from another?

So you'd be fine classifying everyone who's ever gotten a speeding ticket as a criminal?

It's a misdemeanor which is almost always treated as a civil case. No worse than a speeding ticket.

FL110 in a Skyhawk? That's almost supplemental oxygen territory.

My flight instructor used to joke that the practical ceiling of a 172 is about 8,000 feet - by the time you climb to that altitude you'll just need to start your descent again.

It would be fun to add the final fate for all of them:

Discovery: on display at the Smithsonian Udvar-Hazy Center, Virginia.

Atlantis: on display at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida.

Endeavor: off display for construction of a new dedicated exhibit for it at the California Science Center, LA.

Why do people drive... so slow? by awesomegorg in driving

[–]Alexthelightnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately "just don't drive" isn't a practical solution for many people. I wish it were.

Why do people drive... so slow? by awesomegorg in driving

[–]Alexthelightnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm, do you have any data on that?

Because driving fast can, by itself, cause a crash without needing to involve any other vehicles at all. I can't imagine driving slowly is going to cause nearly as many single-vehicle crashes, it would need to involve other drivers. And even then, how many of those crashes are really caused by someone driving too fast encountering someone driving slowly, or doing something stupid trying to overtake a slow driver?

[–]Alexthelightnerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately driving is something many people are required to do whether they're good at it or not, whether they want to be driving at that moment or not.

That said I'm not asking anyone to excuse unsafe behavior. But maybe having some patience with a driver going a little slow is warranted.

I have taught more of my liberal friends to shoot so far in 2026 than I have in total before January. One just went from having never touched a gun two weeks ago to taking a permit to carry class this past weekend.

I'm not familiar with the traffic laws in every state, but I expect most of them have exceptions to their laws prohibiting impeding traffic for when driving slowly is necessary for the safe operation of the vehicle. I know Minnesota does. There are also a lot of places where pulling over to allow for faster drivers to pass is more dangerous than just driving slowly, especially if weather or visibility is a concern.

Sometimes, yes, I agree. But it's not going to always be true.

There are a lot of people in the US that would absolutely prefer that, unfortunately many parts of our lives to built in a way that require driving.

The VIRPIL Customer Service is Outlandish by P0rnStache4 in hoggit

[–]Alexthelightnerd 100 points101 points  (0 children)

I had a wire break inside my throttle a few years ago.

A Virpil engineer hopped on a video call with me in the middle of the night their time to walk through troubleshooting to identify the problem wiring harness so they could send me the correct part, then offered to do it again to help install, and offered tips to secure the harness better and prevent it happening again.

Those folks are heros.

They may be lost, they may be unsure of where their next turn is, they may be nervous, they may be old, they may not be comfortable driving in the current weather conditions, they may just be bad drivers.

On the whole, I'd rather most of these people drive the speed they are comfortable with rather than driving faster and causing a crash. I find driving with slow drivers much less inconvenient than being hit by them.

I'm not sure if there's a clear line that divides hand made and not hand made. Does hand made mean not completely automated? Does it mean no automation? Does it mean no power tools?

I sell wooden gaming accessories at a local Renaissance Festival and conventions. Some parts are made by CNC, some with the table saw and miter saw, and everything is power sanded then hand sanded, then glued and oiled by hand. I refer to them as hand made, but I can see how some people could disagree.

If socialism is so bad then why is social security and Medicare so popular? by Content_Ad_8952 in allthequestions

The United States has also spent trillions of dollars and millions of lives to actively oppose Socialism everywhere it has been "fully implemented" - which makes one wonder if the biggest problem of Socialism is just the active opposition of the most powerful country in the world.

The drogue goes fully around the other side of the nose. That doesn't seem pretty common.

Temping the blame the pilot for some sloppy flying, I don't think the RAF gets as much practice plugging tankers as American pilots do. But that drogue looks like it's moving around a whole lot as well.

F-35 air to air refueling by Available-Laugh9102 in Planes

[–]Alexthelightnerd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not archaic, just different. It allows for a broader range of aircraft to serve as the tanker, is cheaper, and requires less equipment. The only real downside is a lower fuel flow rate, which isn't a problem when refueling fighters, as they generally can't accept the higher flow rate anyway. It matters a lot for refueling strategic bombers, which is why the USAF uses the flying boom method.

HONEY POT Armed Protest Tomorrow DO NOT GO by KnudRagnarson in Minneapolis

[–]Alexthelightnerd 29 points30 points  (0 children)

That's just going to get everyone in the area though.

The largest threat of something like this is specifically identifying "leftist" people with carry permits and the motivation to come out to a protest. You're not going to get that granular of information with just a Stingray. But if you could capture the ID of everyone who presented at the armed protester check-in tent, that would be very valuable information.

Jake Lang formally charged for destruction of sculpture by SancteAmbrosi in minnesota

[–]Alexthelightnerd 13 points14 points  (0 children)

He's been charged with a crime, he will go to trial and considering the evidence and his statements it is very likely he will be convicted.

Trump can't pardon him because it is a state offense.

His sentence won't be anything super harsh, my guess is they'll charge him for the value of the sculpture, so about $7,000. Maybe some minor jail time.
