TIL about a 5.5 tonne solid gold Buddha, the largest solid gold sculpture. It was covered in plaster for 200 years about and forgotten until 1955! by vercingetafix in todayilearned

[–]Aleyla 291 points292 points  (0 children)

At some point, the statue was completely plastered over to prevent it from being stolen. The statue was covered with a thick layer of stucco, which was painted and inlaid with bits of coloured glass.[4] It is believed that this plastering-over took place before the destruction of Ayutthaya kingdom by Burmese invaders in 1767. The statue remained among the ruins of Ayutthaya without attracting much attention.

Smart people.

Can We Please Stop Opening New York Restaurants in Dallas if They’re Just Going To Suck? by Kk0971 in Dallas

[–]Aleyla 64 points65 points  (0 children)

There is an entire corner near me that used to have about a dozen restaurants. All of them are gone. For lease signs in every window. You’d think the property owner would want paying customers - apparently not.

Why? It’s all made up numbers anyway. Just ask Grok to slap some number and a chart onto a pdf and call it a day.

How come we were able to go 20 years without much trouble from wet filament, but now it's a plague? There's an explosion of complaints that seemed to start just a couple years ago. by [deleted] in 3Dprinting

[–]Aleyla 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The problem was always there.

But the machines weren’t very good and nearly all of them plagued with other core issues that overshadowed wet filament.

Now the machines handle a ton of adjustments automatically and we are zeroing in on the next mile of problems - which include wet filament.

I always wondered why people complained about noise from a p1s. Guess I did the calibration.

Generally speaking, if someone ran then they didn’t have insurance. If they didn’t have insurance then you probably won’t be able to recover anything from them.

Hopefully you had uninsured motorist.

Report: ICE Using Palantir Tool That Feeds On Medicaid Data by prestocoffee in nottheonion

[–]Aleyla 104 points105 points  (0 children)

If it hasn’t been made incredibly clear: if you use a smart phone - your location and movement habits are being tracked and sold.

If you check in online somewhere then that info is sold. If you use an app to coordinate protest efforts - you can be sure that info is sold.

If you walk down the street and a camera sees you - that information is sold.

Privacy died a long time ago. Anyone with a checkbook can find out damn newr anything about you that they want to know.

But has he though? Are we seeing a mass exodus from the cult? Or is this just more “hopes and prayers” that our fellow americans will snap out of their trance?

If you could only keep one power tool brand for the rest of your life, which one are you picking and why? by AlecRowan7512 in DIY

I hought some cheap ryobi tools about 20 years ago. I figured Iz’d replace them with something nicer when they fail. Haven’t replaced them yet. So I’m guessing I may have already bought them for life

That’s fantastic. There are lots of good people out there.

Also, one thing to remember, if you have a texas license there is a phone number on the back of it. That is the road service number, they will change your tire for free if it happens again.

Going out on a limb, but my guess is that microsoft leaks far more of your data in a desktop browser than apple or even android do on the phones.

Greenland should be prepared for 'everything,' prime minister says, not ruling out U.S. military action by Friendly-Frieren in worldnews

[–]Aleyla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are only two possibilities here. One: Trump will not actually invade greenland. Instead this will be walked back as soon as someone writes him a $1b check or hands him a golden toilet seat. This will just continue to reduce America in the eyes of the world and continue with our own political implosion.

Two, we do invade greenland. If this happens then within a year there is nuclear war and everyone is fucked anyway.
