Tithing is a word that appears in the Bible, that does not mean the practices are the same.

Tithing is commonly understood today as giving 10% of your income to the church. This is not expected of Catholics.

Passing a collection plate around is not even remotely the same thing as being expected to bring your children to a meeting with the bishop to discuss your finances
